Titbits from the history of censorship, another British director in need of a location, and business as usual for Bond
Sex, violence and cakes
The British Board of Film Classification has had a busy week. The day before launching its annual report, the BBFC met the Critics' Circle to celebrate both bodies' centenary years with a presentation and lunch at the Cinema Museum in south London. Senior examiner, historian and dry wit Craig Lapper took critics through a brief history of the relationship between the two organisations. Over the years, and in just about equal measure, critics have either chided the BBFC for being too liberal or too draconian. The censors' original 43 "grounds for deletion" list from 1916 included several amusingly old-fashioned points, including scenes of "vitriol throwing", "scenes laid in disorderly houses", "vulgar accessories in the staging", "indecorous dancing" and scenes likely to "bring into disrepute British prestige in the Empire". Politics,...

Metropolis; Heartbreaker; Whatever Works; Collapse
"The mediator between head and hands must be the heart!" While the DVD market thrives on unnecessary recuts and extended editions (why make new movies when you can endlessly repackage and resell old ones?), the case for an entirely new version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927/2010, Eureka, PG) is stronger than most. Using 16mm materials recently discovered in a small museum in Buenos Aires, this "Masters of Cinema" rerelease reinstates key scenes excised by distributors against Lang's wishes after the film's initial German release, pushing the running time up to about 150 minutes, thereby "solving" many of the narrative ellipses that have troubled scholars and viewers for decades.
The result is a film that comes close to replicating Lang's original vision, although I must confess that the additions (although substantial) had less effect on the overall tone of the movie that I had expected. Maybe I...

I felt like I was watching The Muppet Show. That probably says a lot about my age that the only memory I have of Petula Clark is via The Muppet Show. But frankly, beyond that memory I didn't know who the woman was. Petula Clark's era has long passed. Petula thrived in a day and age when television variety shows weren't just a telethon marketing gimmick; in that time Petula Clark reigned as a queen (one of a few). Dancing about with show men and wearing elaborate costumes - Petula Clark's career gets a revival via DVD compilation courtesy of the Infinity Entertainment Group.
Watching Portrait of Petula Clark you're taken back to a time when showmanship meant something. Meant anything really. We still have concerts today, but the production value put into them has more to do with pyrotechnics...
