With Emmy nominations just days away, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts are furiously updating their predictions. Their latest odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actress are in and the news is somewhat mixed for Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”). Sure, she’s still predicted to receive her first career Emmy nomination, but she can’t seem to eke past the two front-runners to win: Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”). As Murphy’s alter ego Alexis Rose might squeal, “Ew, David.”

The 2020 Emmys are shaping up to be the Battle of the Co-stars for HBO’s “Succession.” For months now, awards watchers have been pulling their hair out over predicting who might win between lead actors Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong. But now some of our Emmy Experts are divided over a pair of supporting players: Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen. Of our 30 pundits from major media outlets, seven predict Culkin will triumph for playing immature son Roman Roy, while one goes out on a limb for Macfadyen as Tom Wambsgans, a Waystar executive who’s married to Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook).

Good news, “Better Call Saul” fans: this may be the year Rhea Seehorn finally earns some Emmy love.
The actress has long been considered one of the most overdue for a nomination, but every year the TV academy gives her coal in her Emmy stocking. It’s not like voters aren’t watching the show — “Bcs” has earned 32 bids over the years including Best Drama Series four times. Well, according to Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts, Seehorn will receive a 2020 nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actress, with these four even predicting her to win: Eric Deggans (NPR), Libby Hill (Indiewire), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com) and Matt Webb Mitovich (TVLine).

Earlier this year “The Good Place” signed off the air to great fanfare, but how many Emmy voters watching? NBC’s cerebral comedy about life after death starred Ted Danson as a demon with a heart of gold and Kristen Bell as a human struggling to become a good person, with its last episode airing January 30. The uplifting show has been nominated for seven Emmys overall, including Best Comedy Series (2019), Best Comedy Actor for Danson and Best Comedy Guest Actress for Maya Rudolph, but has yet to win anything. Now one of Gold Derby’s 31 Emmy Experts thinks that will change for its final season.

All season long, Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) has been the odds-on front-runner to win Best Comedy Supporting Actor at the 2020 Emmys, and that still hasn’t changed now that nominations voting is over. In fact, a leading 19 of our 31 Emmy Experts predict a second consecutive victory for the “Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer, compared to 10 who think “Schitt’s Creek” creator/writer/actor Dan Levy will prevail. The other two prognosticators throw their support at Sterling K. Brown (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).

“Saturday Night Live” Season 45 may have been forced to shut down early due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that won’t stop Kate McKinnon from taking home her third career Emmy Award. Four of Gold Derby’s 31 Experts predict McKinnon will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress at the 2020 Emmys: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly), Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo). That’s good enough for second place on our odds chart, behind only Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), someone who’s also looking to add a third trophy in this category.

Voting for the 2020 Emmy nominations ended on Monday, with 25,000 members of the Television Academy marking their ballots in dozens of categories. For Best Drama Series, they are split between no less than five shows: 26 predict a victory for HBO’s “Succession,” two choose Netflix’s “Ozark” and one apiece opt for Netflix’s “The Crown,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and FX’s “Pose.” Do You agree or disagree with our Experts’ Emmy predictions?

“Watchmen” finished airing last December, but it wasn’t until recently that actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II skyrocketed into the top six in our Emmy predictions for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor. Do you agree that he’s bound for a nomination? And could he even win?
Spoiler alert! While Abdul-Mateen is initially believed to be Cal, the unassuming husband of crusading police detective Angela Abar (Regina King), he is eventually revealed to be the omniscient and omnipotent being Doctor Manhattan, who has been in disguise for years — even disguised from himself. So the actor gets to play dual roles, which gives voters a chance to see his dramatic range, though he might be slightly disadvantaged by the fact that one of his personas is often shrouded in glowing blue visual effects.

Even though Judith Light has been working in television for decades, she has yet to win a Primetime Emmy despite four career nominations: “Ugly Betty” (2007), “Transparent” (2016 & 2017) and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2018). The actress does, however, have two Daytime Emmys on her mantel for “One Life to Live” (1980 & 1981). Last year the TV academy forced FX’s “American Horror Story” to submit in the drama categories for the first time, since the “Apocalypse” season contained continuing storylines and characters from both “Murder House” and “Coven.” Because of the switcheroo, “Ahs” scream queen Jessica Lange was able to nab an Emmy nomination in Best Drama Guest Actress — a category she wouldn’t have been eligible for had the show stayed as a limited series. (Lange lost to Cherry Jones for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”) At this year’s Emmys, the exact same thing could happen to Andrew Scott for his one-and-done role on Netflix’s “Black Mirror.”

Not many people correctly predicted Luke Kirby‘s come-from-behind Emmy victory last year for Best Comedy Guest Actor. In fact, this “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer was in fourth place on our 2019 odds chart, behind Peter MacNicol (“Veep”), John Mulaney (“Saturday Night Live”) and Adam Sandler (“Saturday Night Live”). This year our Emmy Experts don’t plan on making the same mistake again — he’s in the runner-up position to win his second Emmy Award for the Amazon comedy. For the most part, Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict that the Best Comedy Actress trophy will go to either Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”) or Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). However, one gutsy Emmy prognosticator out of 29 (Lynette Rice of Ent. Weekly) instead goes out on a limb for Merritt Wever (“Run”). And why not? This beloved actress has already taken home two Emmy Awards — both rather unexpectedly — for her work on “Nurse Jackie” (Comedy Supporting Actress in 2013) and “Godless” (Limited/Movie Supporting Actress in 2018).
Wever was so gobsmacked by her first win that she infamously gave one of the shortest Emmy speeches of all time: “Thank you so much. Um … I gotta go, bye.” So it’d be foolish to underestimate the actress yet again at the 2020 ceremony. Watch the Emmys flashback video below.

When the Emmy nominations are unveiled on July 28, will the list contain more racial, cultural and gender diversity than usual?
“I think that’s going to happen,” asserts veteran TV journalist Delaina Dixon in our chat with Gold Derby senior editor Joyce Eng. “We have to celebrate diversity.”

Talk about a nail-biter! Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets are almost evenly divided between “Bad Education” and “El Camino” when it comes to Best TV Movie. All 29 Emmyologists believe both programs will earn nominations on July 28, so that’s no help. But when it comes to the winner, 13 pick the HBO telefilm about a true-to-life high school scandal while 12 choose the Netflix spin-off about a fan-favorite “Breaking Bad” character. “Watchmen,” HBO’s uniquely timely program about mask-wearing and racial injustice, is our Experts’ pick to take home the trophy for Best Limited Series at the 2020 Emmys. The one-and-done series starring Regina King as a vigilante superhero is a loose adaptation of the 1980s comic book of the same name, which only lasted a single volume. But, not so fast. Even though a vast majority of our Emmyologists from major media outlets predict “Watchmen” to win (18 out of 29), there’s a slight problem in that two Experts don’t think it’ll be nominated at all. In fact, only one limited series has the support of every single Expert in terms of getting a nomination: FX’s “Mrs. America.” That helps boosts the political drama’s racetrack odds to 39/10, which is just a smidge below the leading 19/5 odds for HBO’s comic book series.

Even though Jonathan Banks is a six-time Emmy nominee in Best Drama Supporting Actor, he still has yet to take home a trophy — a dubious record he shares with Ed Begley Jr. Banks’ bids are spread out over three shows — “Wiseguy” (1989), “Breaking Bad” (2013) and “Better Call Saul” — while Begley’s were all for “St. Elsewhere” (1983-88).
