The tear-stricken faces peering up adoringly at James Bond producer Michael G. Wilson, seated in the royal box at Royal Albert Hall, during a lengthy standing ovation at “The Sound of 007” concert said it all: It’s not just movie music — the music, for this franchise at least, is the movie.
Tuesday’s charity event at London’s grandest venue preceded the Oct. 5 release of feature documentary “The Sound of 007” on Amazon’s Prime Video, and didn’t hesitate to remind both Bond novices and grizzled veterans that the franchise is virtually synonymous with some of cinema’s most iconic tracks.
The concert — part of a cavalcade of events marking the British spy’s 60th anniversary on screen — was produced and overseen by five-time Bond composer David Arnold, who was front and centre the entire evening, shredding with Hans Zimmer on an electric guitar or belting out late Soundgarden frontman...

“Dancing with the Stars” will get shaken, not stirred, when it celebrates Bond Night on Monday’s episode.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the release of the first James Bond film, “Dr. No,” the top 14 will perform to Bond theme songs on Week 3. But you won’t hear one notable tune: Adele‘s “Skyfall” from the 2012 film of the same name and the first Bond theme to win the Best Original Song Oscar. The subsequent two Oscar-winning themes, Sam Smith‘s “Writing on the Wall” from 2015’s “Spectre” and Billie Eilish‘s title track to last year’s “No Time to Die,” will be represented on the show.
And with the moody nature of most of the tracks, you will not be shocked to learn that there will be lots of rumbas — eight of them, to be exact. Definitely a missed opportunity not to make it 007.
For the second week in a row,...

For my soundtrack to The Awakening I used an orchestra and choir – but the creepiest sound we created was with a slide whistle. Here are some other simple but effective soundtracks …
I've just done the music to the feature film The Awakening. Had a massive orchestra, huge choir and a bunch of other things. Sounds fantastic. Cost me a flipping fortune – these things do. Nicholas Dodd – who does the orchestrations for David Arnold's James Bond scores – recently likened the rate you spend money recording a film score to "standing next to a bin with a wad of £20 notes and trying to throw them in one by one as fast as you can". That is a pretty accurate assessment. But despite having some of the best musicians in London and Abbey Road's finest at my disposal, the spookiest sound we created was the one I made in my flat with...

Cinema Retro's London photographer Mark Mawston reports on a very special evening in honor of a very special man.
By Mark Mawston
On one special day in June 2007 I found myself in dream land. Not only was John Barry playing the Meltdown festival that night but I was allowed access to the rehearsal of the show in the hope that I would gain some informal photographs of Barry. As it transpired, those formal shots did indeed happen - to an extent I simply could not have imagined, as towards the end of the rehearsal John's wife Laurie asked if I could return later that evening and take some intimate family portraits and some informal shots of John himself. This was a great honour, but that’s another story.
Cut to last Monday evening, another very special day in June. I found myself attending the Memorial concert of the great man himself.
