Jules Dassin’s powerful picture was a hit in Europe but remained mostly obscure here, despite featuring the great Melina Mercouri and a score of Continental stars. Adapted by two blacklistees in exile it doesn’t try to hide its revolutionary aims — Nikos Kazantzakis’s uncompromised storyline places The Church as a main obstruction to social progress, justice, and life & liberty. It’s no wonder it wasn’t ‘movie of the week’ in 1957. It’s been beautifully remastered at its original CinemaScope width, uncut.

We can depend on H.G. Clouzot to find people at their most desperate, at their worst. His updated adaptation of Manon Lescaut dissects the trauma of amour fou And the hypocrisy, opportunism and political horror of postwar France. Resistance fighter Michel Auclair and provincial tart Cécile Aubrey are lovers caught in a web of vice and treachery, much of it of their own making. Their desperate escape takes them to an inhuman landscape devoid of mercy. Clouzot may pity these characters, but he sure doesn’t give them a break.

There are multiple Fausts. Ever-multiplying, in fact, as if to outbreed all other fictional characters. The good doctor is unusual: Marlowe and Goethe's plays are both classics, and then there's Mann's novel; at least fifteen operas... In movies, Murnau rules supreme, but I like William Dieterle's The Devil and Daniel Webster just as much. René Clair's La beauté du diable is one of his best films, with Michel Simon and Gérard Philipe trading places as tempter and tempted, both utterly charming in their quite distinct ways. Sokurov just made another, well liked here at the Notebook. But for sheer visual rapture, Claude Autant-Lara's 1955 version Marguerite de la nuit takes the Technicolor cake and runs cackling all the way to perdition.

The lights burn brightly for the rich and the poor in The Rules of the Game.
A staple on all the “Greatest Films Ever Made” lists, Jean Renoir’s 1939 The Rules of the Game (La règle du jeu) is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners.
Starring Nora Gregor, Paulette Dubost, Marcel Dalio and Renoir himself, the comedy-drama movie is set during a weekend at a marquis’ countryside chateau filled with an assorted cast of characters — the rich and their poor servants — and lays bare some ugly truths about members of the haute bourgeois.
The Rules of the Game is a victim of tumultuous history. The movie was subjected to cuts after premiere audiences rejected it in 1939, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II. It wasn’t reconstructed until 1959 and it’s that version,...
