Alice Drummond, the prolific character actress best known for small roles in films like Ghostbusters—where she played the New York librarian terrified by the film’s first spectral apparition—has died. Drummond was 88.
Drummond spent much of her career on and off-Broadway, where she was nominated for a Tony Award in 1970. That came shortly after she broke into TV, with a recurring part as Nurse Jackson on ABC’s vampire soap opera Dark Shadows. Drummond would work steadily on-camera for the next 40 years, often in roles capitalizing on her small frame, sweet voice, and talent for cheerful, slightly off-kilter smiles.
Over the course of her career, Drummond would play off some of the most powerful comic voices of the 1980s and ’90s, sharing scenes and trading banter with Bill Murray, Robin Williams (in Awakenings, where she played Lucy, the comatose patient capable of catching a thrown ...

Eyewitness (Original Release Date: 13 February 1981)
Among the movies I’ve watched so far for the column, Eyewitness is the one most obviously of its era. Where something like The Incredible Shrinking Woman might stake its claim to the early eighties based wholly on eccentricities, Eyewitness nabs an adjacent plot with an endearing effortlessness. That couch you remember from your aunt’s trailer with the heavy wooden arm rests and the burlap-y plaid upholstery is there, as are the hard angles on cars, the idea of home video as a novelty, the pale-red-paint look of movie blood, and, perhaps most importantly, a nearness to the Vietnam War that makes coping with it seem more a given than some form of filmmaker fetishism.
The Vietnam War connection is rolled out bit by bit throughout Eyewitness’s first half, and I found myself wondering if audiences of the time would have been quicker...

If you mention the city of Schenectady, N.Y., Charlie Kaufman will be quick to point out that although this is where his new film is set, it is not the title. The title is Synecdoche, New York. And if you have trouble pronouncing it, he will write it out phonetically for you on a card: (sin-ek-doh-kee). He'll even offer to sign it for you. In addition to playing on the film's setting, the word synecdoche has several meanings; most popularly, it means, according to American Heritage Dictionary, "a figure of speech in which a part is used as a whole." What this has to do with Kaufman's new film — in which, as with all his works, the world created lies somewhere between fantasy and fever dream — is up to the audience to decipher. The plot centers on Caden (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a theatre director who earns a genius grant...
