- Latterly rumoured to have been under consideration for the rôle of the original Doctor Who (1963), a job he would have already ruled himself out of after enrolling on the BBC's director's course.
- After a stint in his local amateur dramatic world, was enrolled at London's Old Vic Theatre school (graduating in 1949) and was an early member of the Royal Court's English Stage Company (ESC), as well as spending time with the Young Vic company and Stratford's Memorial Theatre.
- Trained as an engineering draughtsman in the North-Eastern shipyards, following a scholarship to Jarrow grammar school.
