Twenty-seven years after the release of the the slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and twenty-six years after the follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here), Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. might be reprising the roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson in a new sequel… but we still don’t know for sure. This new sequel was announced thirteen months ago, and even though it was said at the time that Hewitt and Prinze were in talks to return, Prinze later said that no one had been in contact with him about it yet. Hewitt said she would 100% be on board if an offer came her way – and even though she recently told Entertainment Tonight she couldn’t confirm but wouldn’t deny that she’d be back for the new sequel, she also revealed that...

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the next installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) writing the screenplay. We don’t yet know if the original cast will be back for the new movie, but that’s something Jennifer Love Hewitt is refusing to deny at this point in time.
The actress told Entertainment Tonight over the weekend, when asked if Julie James will be returning in the upcoming sequel to the ’90s hit, “I can’t confirm but I won’t deny.”
Jennifer Love Hewitt notes in the same interview that she hasn’t yet read the script for the film, but her comments do generally seem to suggest she’s very much on board. We expect the next I Know What You Did Last Summer movie will mix new characters and legacy characters,...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Writer Teases Upcoming Sequel; A Slasher for the Social Media Age?
As we learned last year, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the next installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) on board to write the screenplay. We don’t yet know if the original cast will be back, but the film had been originally announced as a legacy sequel of sorts.
Speaking with Collider this week, writer Leah McKendrick remained pretty tight lipped about her I Know What You Did Last Summer plans, but she did provide some low-key insights.
McKendrick told the outlet, “…no spoilers, but I will say that I think if you’re an Og fan like me and you, I think you’re gonna be happy. I think you’re gonna get it.”
She also teased a social media aspect to the upcoming sequel, something that of course wasn’t present in the original movies because,...

It was reported back in February that both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were “in talks” to return for an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel from Sony Pictures, but Freddie Prinze Jr. called that report into question just one month later. According to the actor, he hadn’t actually been offered anything at all – at the time, at least.
So what’s going on here? Is Sony actually even developing a sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer? And if so, are Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt even interested?
Well, in a new interview with the podcast Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum, Jennifer Love Hewitt made it clear that she’d love to reprise the role of Julie James one more time.

It's doubtful that when Lois Duncan published the slow-burn mystery "I Know What You Did Last Summer" for young adult readers, she predicted it would become the basis for a horror movie franchise over 20 years later. That, however, is precisely what happened — much to the chagrin of junior high English teachers everywhere. Written by the now legendary teen horror screenwriter Kevin Williamson, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was written years before it finally hit production, but after the massive success of "Scream" in 1996, producer Erik Feig knew the best course of action was getting another Williamson slasher into theaters.
Using Duncan's novel as a loose basis, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is about four friends named Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Ray, and Barry (Ryan Phillippe) who after partying on the Fourth of July after high school graduation, hit a person in a drunk driving accident.

When we talk about the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, we often only talk about the original 1990s slasher and its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Both films have been upgraded to 4K Ultra HD, but they’re not the only two films in the saga.
Direct-to-video installment I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer was released in 2006, and Sony is giving the sequel its Blu-ray debut on September 26, 2023.

Books are being pulled from the library shelves of an Iowa school district following new legislation from Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, which purports to protect children from obscene material, The Gazette reports.
The new legislation, Senate File 496, prohibits “instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation in school districts, charter schools and innovation zone schools in kindergarten through grade six.” It requires that every book available to students be “age appropriate” and free of any “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act.”

Based on Lois Duncan's 1973 novel, Jim Gillespie's 1997 thriller "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was one of the first major players in the brief post-"Scream" slasher revival. In terms of its structure, aesthetics, and dialogue, "Summer" bore more than a passing resemblance to Wes Craven's film from the year previous; it helped that both films were written by star screenwriter Kevin Williamson.
"Summer" is about a quartet of friends from a small fishing village who are enjoying their last summer together before leaving to go to college. While driving along the beach, they accidentally run over a vagrant. Rather than tell anyone, they drag their victim to the water, intending to throw him in. The vagrant isn't yet dead and begins to fight back. In a panic, they thwack him on the head and drop him in the water anyway. One year later, wracked by guilt and no longer speaking,...

Announced back in February of this year, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) will be directing a brand new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel for Sony Pictures, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. both said to be in talks to reprise their roles from the original two slasher movies. But let’s hold that thought for just a second.
Speaking with TooFab last week, Freddie Prinze Jr. makes it clear that he hasn’t actually been offered a role in the new movie. And that means he certainly hasn’t signed on to star.
“I have been offered nothing, nothing,” the actor clarifies. “They just said that to get people excited. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" almost worked as a phantom wave for the neo-slasher genre, hitting theaters in the wake of Wes Craven's game changer "Scream," and sneaking in just a couple of months before "Scream 2" in October of 1997. Spawning an inferior sequel, a third entry called "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" with an entirely new cast, and a recently canceled Prime Video series, the original film has stayed surprisingly relevant. Now, a legacy sequel is on the way with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to return. Once again, the "Last Summer" franchise is capitalizing on the resurgent success of the "Scream" series, giving genre fans even more reason to get a little nostalgic for the late '90s horror craze.

I know what we're doing next summer – or at least, sometime soon. The teen slasher "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is reportedly the next big horror saga to get the legacy sequel treatment, according to Deadline, and we might even be able to catch some of the original film's characters back in action.
The outlet reports that "Do Revenge" director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is on board to direct the sequel for Sony, with both Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt in talks to reprise their roles from the 1997 film. This is far from the first time the story of a group of guilty teens being haunted by a hook-handed man has been revisited: the original was followed up by two sequels, and a now-canceled Prime Video series re-adapted the 1973 Lois Duncan novel in 2021.

Sony Pictures is moving forward with another sequel for the teen horror franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer, with Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to return, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The project, which dips into the late ’90s nostalgia, is in the earliest stages of development, and talent deals have yet to be fully hammered out, according to sources. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who co-wrote Thor: Love and Thunder and directed Netflix’s Do Revenge, is on board to direct the follow-up to the 1997 slasher film in which four friends are hunted by a murderer after they cover up an accident in which someone was killed.
The original version, which starred Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Prinze and was scripted by Scream scribe, Kevin Williamson, grossed 125 million.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) has been brought on board to direct the film.
Deadline reports, “Insiders say the project is still early development and that Neal H. Moritz is in talks to return as producer with Leah McKendrick on board to write the script.”

It's hard to call an actor like Don Cheadle "underrated" given how long he's been active in the film industry. However, it feels like Cheadle isn't often recognized for what an incredible cinematic chameleon he is. Whether he's trading quips with Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, popping up in prestige dramas, or playing key supporting roles as part of sprawling ensemble casts, Cheadle has an incredible versatility to him.
Although Cheadle has been working since the 1980s, he's reached new levels of fame in the 21st century. In addition to delivering award-worthy performances in theaters and on comedy shows like "House of Lies" and "Black Monday," he's stepped into the directorial chair for his debut feature, "Miles Ahead." Muse Watson Took An Intensely Physical Approach To Playing I Know What You Did Last Summer's Slasher
One of the cooler icons to emerge from the '90s teen-horror movie wave is the hook-wielding slayer of Jim Gillespie's "I Know What You Did Last Summer." The late '90s Kevin WIlliamson-penned adaptation of Lois Duncan's 1973 novel got a green light after Wes Craven's "Scream" became a smash hit. This time, the killer would don a hooded rain slicker and boots in seaside North Carolina, where quartet of teens' lives would change forever. Brainy brunette Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), rich, arrogant jock Barry (Ryan Phillippe), blonde beauty queen Helen ("Buffy's" Sarah Michelle Gellar), and aw-shucks everyman Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) are drunkenly celebrating their high school graduation when they hit a man with their car -- then they dump his body and swear to keep quiet. A mystery stalker taunts them a year later with notes proclaiming the film's title. For most of the movie,...

Witnessing the release of Wes Craven's "Scream" in December of 1996 and the release of Jim Gillespie's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" in October of the following year was to witness a trend crystallize. Both films, written by Kevin Williamson, sought to breathe new life into 15-year-old slasher tropes by populating the movies with a particular type of hip-talking, self-aware '90s teen who could recognize when they were in a slasher situation. For the next few years, self-aware "hipster" teen slashers came briefly into vogue, and audiences were treated to the likes of "Urban Legend," "Valentine," "Cherry Falls," "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later," "The Faculty," and "Teaching Mrs. Tingle." Those last three, not coincidentally, were also scripted by Williamson.

Not many actors can claim a breakthrough performance as impressive as that of Isabelle Fuhrman. In 2009, she took the horror world by storm as Esther, a sweet little Russian girl with a big secret. Orphan was a surprise hit thanks in large part to Fuhrman’s shockingly nuanced performance as an escaped murderer posing as an innocent child.
Fuhrman transitioned this notoriety into a coveted role in the high-profile adaptation of The Hunger Games where she plays another psychotic killer named Clove. Though she’s worked steadily since then, many of Fuhrman’s projects have flown under the radar of mainstream audiences. This month’s release of Orphan: First Kill, William Brent Bell’s prequel to the original film, sees the actress cleverly reprise the role that made her famous. Once again, she shines as Lena/Esther in a fantastically fun film destined to become a camp classic.

News of the cancellation is somewhat surprising.

Exclusive: Prime Video has opted not to order a second season of I Know What You Did Last Summer, a modern take on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan and the 1997 film adaptation.
The YA horror series, produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures TV, debuted Oct. 15 to mixed reviews with the first four episodes, followed by a weekly releases capped by the season finale on Nov. 12.
I Know What You Did Last Summer was part of Amazon Studios’ push in young adult programming. The streamer remains committed to the genre and has breakout The Wilds, which is returning for a second season, animated series Fairfax, which is in the middle of a two-season pickup, and the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty, a TV series adaptation of the YA novel series from Jenny Han, the author behind To All The Boys I Loved Before.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the series premiere of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
After Alison (Madison Iseman) learns her twin sister Lennon (also Iseman) slept with the guy she has been in love with for years in the premiere episode of Amazon Prime Video’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” she just wants to leave their graduation party. Alison is emotionally distraught when she drives away, but also distracted by her sisters’ friends, who pile into the car, drunk and high. She may not have meant to hit something on a dark road, but when she gets out of the car and sees it is her sister, she agrees to dump the body — and then steals her identity and lives for the next year as Lennon.
Even if shock incapacitated Alison in the immediate aftermath of the accident,...

The Amazon Original YA horror series “I Know What You Did Last Summer” premiered on Wednesday night with an outdoor screening at The Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. Based on the iconic 1997 slasher movie which was adapted from Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel and starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe, the eight-episode series maintains the same initial set-up as its source material.
The series follows a group of friends who are bound together after they cover up a tragic accident that occurred on the night of their high school graduation. One year later, they find themselves targeted by a violent stalker who has discovered their dark secret.
Series star Madison Iseman told Variety that she was already a big fan of the cult classic. “I’ve always loved any kind of scary movie, especially the 90s slasher,” Iseman said. “It’s like the best...

“You can never really know anyone, least of all yourself,” Madison Iseman’s character says atop the first episode of Amazon’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s a foreboding thesis statement, one that viewers won’t fully grasp until the end of the premiere — if even then.
Like the original Ikwydls movies from the late ’90s, this limited series adaptation of Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel also revolves around a group of teenagers keeping a deadly secret, much to the disapproval of a mysterious figure who — wait for it — knows what they did last summer. But what...

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” as a franchise has its roots in Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel about a group of teenagers who hit someone with a car, cover it up and then are stalked and murdered for the secret one year later. But it rose to popularity with a new generation in 1997 when Jennifer Love Hewitt starred in a series of film adaptations. Nearly a quarter-century later, the story has been adapted once again, this time as a dramatic television series for Amazon Prime Video, with Madison Iseman as the new face of the franchise.
Iseman stars as twins Alison and Lennon in the new series — recent high school graduates who really only have the same face in common.

With the upcoming release of another “Scream” movie and nostalgic IP becoming the de facto lay of the land, there are two schools of thought when it comes to reviving a franchise: Keep the original intent and make fun, or go completely out of left field and do something different. In the case of Amazon Prime Video’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the new serialized version retains little save for the name of the 1997 feature (itself based on Lois Duncan’s novel of the same name) and the generalized plot point that a death takes place. In lieu of a return to urban legend frights, audiences get the streaming equivalent of “Euphoria,” where our murder-mystery comes with a healthy, vaguely pornographic, dose of teenage sex and drugs.

The timing is ripe for an all-new version of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” to be revived: The 1997 film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Philippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar was a contemporary piece with the original Neve Campbell-led “Scream,” which is soon returning with a much-hyped new sequel-slash-reboot movie, and slasher pop culture is now at a perfect millennial nostalgia touchpoint. However, unlike January’s upcoming “Scream,” Amazon’s eight-episode “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series isn’t also a continuation of the original series (including the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”), despite the recent passing of the torch from the original cast. Instead, writer and executive producer Sara Goodman has created a whole other loose adaptation of the 1973 Lois Duncan novel of the same name.

What are you waiting for? Now is the time to get excited for Amazon Prime Video's TV adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer. In less than 24 hours, a new group of teens will experience a summer of horror following one fatal car accident. Though the premise is similar to the 1997 cult classic film, which is also based on Lois Duncan's 1973 suspense novel, it seems that the 2021 iteration of I Know What You Did Last Summer has made some specifics changes that prove it isn't a carbon copy. For instance, instead of the Fourth of July, the car accident that sparks the captivating mystery occurs on graduation night. Not to mention, there's a whole new slew of characters, so, it's likely...

Before it was transformed into a slasher story in its 1997 big-screen adaptation, Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel I Know What You Did Last Summer was more of a morality thriller.
Yes, slasher films have their own moral codes, which tend to be arbitrary ways to let the audience at least subconsciously view the killer as a protagonist. But I Know What You Did Last Summer doesn’t tarry in debates over such questions as “Is having sex sufficient justification to be eviscerated by a man in a hockey mask?” In each incarnation of I Know What You Did Last Summer since ...

The cast of Amazon’s upcoming horror series I Know What you Did Last Summer got a pleasant surprise during the series’ New York Comic Con panel Friday as the stars of the original 1997 film dropped by for some quick “fan questions.”
While appearances by Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Jennifer Love Hewitt were pleasant surprises for the Nycc audience, their words of encouragement and excitement meant more for the talent and creative team of the upcoming show.
“It feels like they’ve given us their blessing; that’s hugely meaningful to me and to all of us,” said showrunner Sarah Goodman. “The last thing we want to do is undermine what they’ve created. We moved to the next generation with full respect to the movie and to the actors that are in it.”
Set to debut October 15, the YA horror series is a modern take on the 1997 slasher.

Despite the commercial success of the 90s slasher films, the upcoming horror series should avoid copying the characters from the original movie at all costs. On October 15, Amazon Prime Video will launch the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer remake, a TV horror series adapted from the 1973 YA novel by author Lois Duncan; however, the show will heavily be influenced by the 1997 film. That movie was a commercial success and it spawned two more installments: I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. However, the 1997

And much like its predecessor, the 1997 film of the same name, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer, which premieres Oct. 15, takes the terror from Duncan's hit book and places it among the youthful generation of today. So, it's only right that, through her smash song "Brutal," Gen Z queen Olivia Rodrigo provides the soundtrack to this foreboding teaser. "This is life," a teenage voice notes as drugs,...

Amazon released the first teaser for its “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot series Wednesday, revealing a new generation of teens being hunted down by a killer who, well, knows what horrible act they did last summer. And thanks to the updates in technology since the original flick — and the Lois Duncan book it’s based on — came out, the new villain in this series is way more tech-savvy.
Just look at that haunting “I’m Coming 4 U” text, complete with a clown emoji, that’s sent to the kids who think no one knows about the crime they are trying to cover up.
