There was one occasion when Dev Anand, forced to quit a blue-collar job he depended on for sustenance, ripped his elder brother Chetan Anand of Rs (the then) princely sum of Rs 5,000 to launch a less than moral venture, and if this was not enough, began wooing the girl his younger brother Vijay ‘Goldie’ Anand fancied, and eventually in luring her away.
If these sordid revelations shock you, do not think too badly of Dev Anand. For all this did not happen in real life, but in reel life, in the social romantic comedy “Kala Bazaar” (1960), which has several distinctions to its credit but chiefly stands out for being the only film in which all the three Anand brothers acted together.
While Chetan Anand had directed the early Dev Anand films, he had sought to branch out on his own after “Taxi Driver” (1954) to indulge in his own creativity, and...

She is last of the Mohicans, belonging to a golden era of music, and is the only flag bearer left perhaps in whole of the world who has seen music evolve from basic instruments, to melodies, to synthetic instruments, to club music and what not! You name any new adaptation in music, and Asha Bhonsle’s association with that genre will immediately pop up.
But whatever be the genre in which she is going to render her vocal prowess, one thing is for sure, her voice will not falter to a node. This is perhaps one of the reasons why when Naushad, who had a wonderful sojourn with Asha Bhonsle in the black and white era and till the sixties, when he came back to give music in Dharamkanta (1982) chose Asha Bhonsle to give voice over to his Tawaif song. By celebrating her 90th birthday with a live performance in Dubai on September 8, Asha Bhosle will be proving yet again that she not only has a tremendous zest for life, but also an ebullience that has enabled her to rule Hindi film music across many genres, from classical to cabaret numbers, sing for generations of composers and audiences, and bring home every award that counts, barring the Bharat Ratna, which she rightfully deserves.
I first met Asha Bhosle after the release of ‘Hare Krishna Hare Ram’ (1971), where I was assisting Dev Anand, and met her last as recently as in 2019 at a music festival in Jaipur, where she was surrounded by friends and admirers, and yet she mentioned to all those present how long our association has been.
I have had the good fortune of writing the lyrics of two of her ageless hit numbers — ‘Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo’ (‘Lootmaar’; 1980) and ‘Suniye,...

Intrinsically talented, both, separately and jointly, gave a new direction to Hindi film music. But to achieve this, Asha Bhosle and Rahul Dev Burman had to surmount a major “hurdle” – creating a new identity distinct from their illustrious and established kin: elder sibling Lata Mangeshkar and father Sachin Dev Burman.
And both succeeded – with a combination of luck, support, their own undeniable virtuosity, and above all, their first joint effort.
AshaBhosle – who is still going strong at 90, having worked with four generations of music composers from O P Nayyar to A R Rehman – added a sensuous allure and element of forthrightness for the Hindi film heroine, without becoming risque or boisterous, even as Burman adroitly used pop and jazz to good effect in electrifying film music – bringing the age of Elvis Presley and the Beatles to India.

Singer Asha Bhosle, who carved out her own independent niche and ruled the roost over the world of music, turns a ripe old 90 on Friday, and notwithstanding a long and eventful musical journey of eight decades, neither her vocal cords are tired nor has she retired…
It was back way, some 80 years ago, when a petite 10-year-old girl Asha Mangeshkar earnestly stood before a studio microphone and recorded her first playback song for composer Datta S. Davjekar, ‘Chala Chala Nav Bal…’ for a Marathi film (‘Majha Bal’ – 1943).
Though it came just a year after her father Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar’s passing (1942), Asha’s maiden number did not exactly set the film industry on fire but she continued to get humdrum singing assignments, and like her older sibling Lata Mangeshkar, continued the uphill musical sojourn.
After many Marathi songs, she finally landed a Hind film song assignment for ‘Chunariya’ (1948), and then...

National Award-winning filmmaker Bhavna Talwar is gearing up to direct a biopic of late iconic filmmaker-actor Guru Dutt.
The biopic is titled "Pyaasa", just like Dutt's iconic films of 1957, and Talwar is in the process of casting the actors for her film. Guru Dutt's life was intense and complex, and it took Talwar seven years to pen the story. Still, instead of an elaborate storytelling format like a web series, she has opted to make a feature film to encapsulate her subject's journey.
"He was a larger-than-life personality and within 10 years he had seen it all -- success as a filmmaker, actor, the commercial success of his cinema, admiration of his fans as an actor, and he also found the companionship of Geeta Dutt, his co-star and wife. At the same time, there is melancholy. You cannot cramp that into a small screen. It deserves a feature film format," Talwar told Ians.

Bollywood has been around for a very long time for sure, but love has been around for longer. As much as Bollywood has somehow kept finding new ways to express love, whether that be the forbidden love of a rich man’s daughter all the way through to the love of another man/woman or in a love that dare not speak its own name because it takes the form of patriotism or religious fervour, love still out lasts Bollywood. So, on this Valentine’s day lets listen to a few different ways Bollywood has tried and failed to capture love over the years.

Take a trip down memory lane! Amitabh Bachchan and team 102 Not Out called out to all the music lovers to re-experience a S.D. Burman’s super-hit ‘Waqt Ne Kiya Haseen Sitam’, sung by Geeta Dutt. However, what is really cool is that it is updated in Amitabh Bachchan’s inimitable voice. The updated version of the yesteryear classic is composed by Rohan-Vinayak.
On Twitter, Mr Bachchan wrote: “One of my most favourite songs! Presenting to you, #SDBurman’s classic, #WaqtNeKiyaKyaHaseenSitam in my voice. Because some tunes should never be forgotten!”
In theaters now, 102 Not Out is an ageless comedy that brings together Indian Cinema’s two biggest stalwarts – Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor – after 27 years with the two legends playing father-son duo for the first time. 102 years young, Dattatraya Vakharia (Bachchan) lives life to the fullest and wants to break the record of oldest living man – that’s...

Hello there, scumbags, perverts, miscreants, and malefactors. This is Scary Cleve, the most rotten smut-monger in the world (or at least on PopOptiq). I’m here to gladly (begrudgingly) introduce you to my new column, Hive of Scum. What is Hive of Scum? Well, pay attention ’cause I’m only gonna explain it once:
Hive of Scum is a column dedicated to the search for, critique of, and promotion of indie comics. N0! Not the fancy dooky “indie” rags over at Image, Dark Horse, Boom!, Black Mask, Action Lab, Vertigo, Oni Press, Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, Idw, and Dynamite. I’m talking about small press comics, stuff put out by jerks that gathered whatever scraps they could gather and published it themselves, or got some bottom feeder nobodies to publish it for them.
This won’t be a typical review column where I’ll just tell you if it’s good,...

With the passing away, quietly on Saturday, of Arun Dutt, the legendary Guru Dutt's second son, his family barring his daughter Nina, seems to be wiped out. While Guru Dutt allegedly committed suicide in 1965, his elder son Tarun Dutt (who had directed Rekha in the 1984 caper Bindiya Chamkegi) apparently took his own life in 1985. The younger son Arun along with his two siblings Tarun and Nina grew up in the homes of Guru Dutt's brother Atma Ram and Geeta Dutt's brother Mukul Roy after both Guru Dutt and his wife Geeta Dutt passed away. By all outward definitions the three children of Guru Dutt had a normal healthy childhood. When Tarun Dutt allegedly killed himself there was a shocked sense of deja vu to the family's tragic history. Arun was only 8 years old when his legendary father passed away. The child didn't know his father's reputation as a living legend.

Known by at least 1008 different names, including “Kailas” (One who bestows Peace), “Shambu” (Source of everything) and “Hari” (Sustainer and Destroyer), Lord Shiva is said to have married Parvarti on Maha Shivratri. Other readings of Hinduism state that Maha Shivratri is the night on which Shiva performed “Tandava” – the dance that led to the creation, conservation and destruction of the Universe.

'In the old days all the movie songs were recorded right there on set," remembers Asha Bhosle, the quintessential Bollywood singer. Now 77, Bhosle was just 11 when she performed her first song on a movie soundtrack, Chala Chala Nav Bala from Majha Bal in 1943. In the 68 years since, she has provided the on-screen singing voice for generations of actresses unable to capture and deliver a song as brilliantly as she could, singing around 20,000 tunes in 14 languages, as well as recording with Robbie Williams, Michael Stipe and the Kronos Quartet, and lending her name to Cornershop's Brimful of Asha, one of the landmark No 1 hits of the 1990s.
