- His parents were Richard J.and and Emma Ennis of Brooklyn. Three of his grandparents were Irish immigrants. Bert had two brothers, neither of whom, like Bert, used the original forms of their names: Frank Leslie, known as Leslie or F. Leslie, a banker, and Richard, known as Harry, whom Bert reported to have been a song-writer and who died at an early age. The family were Roman Catholic, to which religion Bert faithfully adhered.
Bert Ennis was involved with the development of musical accompaniment to silent films.
In his World War II Draft Registration form, Bert described himself as "self-employed" by Bert Ennis Productions c/o Advance Pictures, 630 Ninth Avenue, NY, NY.
Bert spent the latter decades of his life in Roosevelt, Nassau County, NY. He often said that he was writing a history of silent films, but no trace of this work was found after his death. MacDonald - Bert Ennis, a court stenographer in Brooklyn, started his show business career with the Harry Ennis (brother) Music Publishing Company on West 28th St. in New York City. Also worked as an assistant to Sam Spedon, director of publicity for Vitagraph Studios in Brooklyn and also wrote music cues. Worked as the Publicity Director, in the early silent era, for many companies including Thomas H. Ince Productions, Mack Sennett's Keystone Productions and the Kaybee and Broncho Bill companies. Later, also filled the director of publicity position for Weiss Bros. Artclass Pictures Corporation, Columbia Pictures Corporation and Majestic Pictures Corporation. He wrote two-reel comedies, silent and talking, for Pathe, Artclass and Paramount Pictures. In the mid 1930s he was a staff writer for the Paramount Short Features Department (at 525 West 43rd Street, New York City) including the Paramount Varieties, Screen Souvenirs and Mad House series. During these years he frequently wrote magazine articles and features for Motion Picture Magazine, Motion Picture Classic, D.A.C. News and Callboard.
