He traveled to wartime Switzerland to attend Basel's Schola Cantorum, remaining there through 1949. He undertook additional studies in Sweden, England, America, and Germany. He was appointed Cantor at Stockholm's Jacobskirch in 1949. In 1953, he joined the faculty at the Stockholm Conservatory.
