The opening moments of director Andrew C. Erin’s Havenhurst are some of the most intense and suspenseful I’ve seen in sometime. The details we have are few and far between but a woman (Danielle Harris) is in a very old building and she’s fearful of something. What exactly she’s running from we don’t know but it […]...

The title of Andrew C. Erin’s indie horror film refers to a massive, Gothic-style Manhattan apartment whose apartments are rented only to recovering addicts. It’s the film’s most fanciful conceit, because if such a handsome edifice actually existed in the real estate-starved city there would be a dramatic spike in the number of people entering rehab. Unfortunately, the other elements of Havenhurst turn out to be far less imaginative.
The film’s star is Julie Benz, who you would think, after her regular role in Dexter, would want to get as far away from serial killers as possible. The actress,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Bomb, bomb bomb bomb, Boooooomb! Things just kept getting worse and worse at the box office as this past weekend saw more new releases not meeting up to their potential. The horribly-reviewed horror movie Rings (Paramount) ended up around where I predicted with $13 million, taking second place to M. Night Shyamalan’s Split. The sci-fi romance The Space Between Us (Stx Entertainment) didn’t make much of a mark, opening in ninth place with just $3.8 million with about $1,300 per theater. Robert De Niro’s The Comedian (Sony Classics) tanked worse than many recent movies, making less than a million in 848 theaters or about $1,000 per theater. By comparison, the doc I Am Not Your Negro made about 78% of that amount in 800 less theaters.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Brainstorm Media and Twisted Pictures. Director: Andrew C. Erin. Writers: Andrew C. Erin, Daniel Farrands. Cast: Julie Benz, Danielle Harris, Fionnula Flanagan, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn and Belle Shouse. Havenhurst is a horror film from director Andrew C. Erin (Sam's Lake, 2006) and writer Daniel Farrands. The film also stars a few horror film veterans, including: Danielle Harris (Hatchet II, 2010), Julie Benz (Saw V, 2008) and Jennifer Blanc-Biehn. All of the cast and crew come together in a terrifying title, which brings serial killer H.H. Holmes back to life. The film asks: what if H.H. Holmes continued killing in modern times? The eviscerated corpses will answer this question. Meanwhile, the film's moral compass is a bit broken. Almost all of the characters are motivated by vice, while another is just incompetent. Still, Havenhurst invites you into a tenement, which is full...

Ever since I saw him at his height in Young Guns (almost as brilliant as the sequel, Young Guns II), just a scant few years after his portrayal of '50s rocker Ritchie Valens, I have secretly been saddened by his waning acting career.
I think it was 1999’s Bats that killed it. Or was it Walter Hill’s Supernova? Either way, it has never been the same. He’s gone the way of Judd Nelson and C. Thomas Howell. His latest starring role in Metal Tornado is perhaps his greatest B-movie role,...

Imagination Worldwide has recently finished production on the sci-fi thriller Metal Tornado. The film brings the "destructive power" of magnetic tornadoes on Mercury to Earth. That is not a good idea. Soon, disaster strikes as the tornadoes gain energy and size, outside of the laboratory. A release date has not been announced, but fans of natural disaster thrillers can have a look at the early film art. Expect Metal Tornado on television soon, with more details on this production swirling below.
The synopsis for Metal Tornado is here:

Toxic Skies was released on Australian television March 7th of 2009. Now, a year later Image Entertainment is releasing this thriller on DVD March 23rd, in North America. The film, as previously reported here, involves chem' trails, government conspiracies and one medical doctor's (Anne Heche) attempts to find a cure to a mysterious disease (Toxic Skies article). The film definitely has a television movie feel, with pauses at the height of dramatic action. While the film has a somewhat unbelievable premise, Toxic Skies is an interesting ride through a fictional greedy corporate scheme to receive financial rewards by creating a deadly disease.
This disease kills at will and passes from person to person through personal touch. Anne Heche plays Dr. Tess Martin, the central protagonist, who watches her friends suffer from illness, while being petitioned to invest in conspiracies. However, here there is no conspiracy only...

What is more scary a violent slasher, or a film that feeds paranoia about big companies and corrupt governments? Toxic Skies has a premise that incorporates capitalist deception and a disease that is brought about by chem trails. Chem trails are the deliberate release of chemicals at high altitudes to detoxify, or toxify the general public below. Toxic Skies deftly utilizes the public's fear of the potential of this phenomenon and provides, what looks like, an entertaining piece of cinema. The film stars Anne Heche (Spread), Daniel Bacon (39 Steps), and Barclay Hope (Cruel Intentions 2). The DVD date for the release is March 23, with Image Entertainment helping with distribution. More info' below.
A synopsis for Toxic Skies:

Alone With Her opens with a title card that offers statistics on how common stalking has become in this electronic age, but part of what makes the movie work is how specific and personal its plotline is. Writer/director Eric Nicholas‘ second feature is a form-follows-function modern-video movie in the Blair Witch mode, with everything seen through cameras that are integral to the story—only here, the point of view is that of the threatening antagonist instead of the imperiled victim. Colin Hanks gets top billing and makes a creepy impression as Doug, a bookish and awkward young man who breaks into the house of a woman he’s become fixated on, installing tiny hidden video cameras to watch her every move. But the movie belongs to Mexican actress Ana Claudia Talancón, who plays Amy, the object of Doug’s twisted affections who is literally center screen throughout. The movie...

A growing number of people believe in the existence of chemtrails, toxic chemicals or biological agents that are supposedly being deliberately sprayed at high altitude by the Us government (and/or other entities) for a purpose undisclosed to the general public, resulting in respiratory illnesses and other health problems. A couple of days ago a film touching on that very topic, Toxic Skies, aired on Australian TV, but it's nearly impossible to find any information on it. Not even on the IMDb.
