‘Abbott Elementary’ Valentine’s Day Episode Woos Ratings Win Over CBS’ Super Bowl Commercial Special
ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” Valentine’s Day-themed episode was able to woo the 18-49 demographic on Wednesday, per Nielsen live plus same-day figures, in the mockumentary comedy’s first ratings win of the TV season. However, viewers still swooned over CBS’ Super Bowl Commercial Special, which had the highest average viewership of the night and was a close second to the Quinta Brunson-starring title’s demo win.
At 9 p.m., right after the early series premiere of the Gina Rodriguez dramedy “Not Dead Yet,” “Abbott Elementary” averaged a primetime night high with 0.56 in the demo. The episode, which saw Brunson’s Janine and Tyler James Williams’ Gregory inch closer to the highly anticipated romantic conclusion of their will-they-won’t-they arc, also netted 3.2 average million viewers overall. That was up by 50 from last week’s rerun installment last week.

The “NFL on CBS” broadcast crew may have delivered brilliant insights at halftime of the AFC Championship game today between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs.
Unfortunately, it was almost impossible to hear what they had to say. That’s because the halftime show music from country artist Walker Hayes overpowered the sound levels in the broadcast booth.
Massive speakers for the Hayes show at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City were positioned right behind the mobile set where the CBS analysts were pontificating. That made it almost impossible to discern anything said by host James Brown or analysts Phil Simms, Bill Cowher, Nate Burleson and Boomer Esiason.
At one point, Esiason said: “I didn’t hear anything you just said.”
The network shares some of the blame. During the regular season, halftime analysis emanates from a studio in New York, where the sound and lighting can be controlled. However,...

No one watches the Super Bowl just for the football. It’s about the whole spectacle of the show, which includes bombastic halftime performances and yes, those commercials, the latter which manage to linger in the public mind for years after their 30 seconds are over.

HBO’s “Wild Card: The Downfall of a Radio Loudmouth” promised a revealing look at former Wfan morning radio personality Craig Carton. During the documentary, the former “Boomer and Carton” host — who was recently released from prison for his involvement in a multimillion-dollar ticket-resale pyramid scheme — said he was repeatedly sexually abused at a sleep-away camp as a child.
But “Wild Card” goes the teaser route with that bit of information, with Carton initially vaguely mentioning childhood “trauma” before going into detail a bit later in the feature-length film. The time between setup and payoff, if we may borrow terms generally used for far less serious matters, may make viewers feel like they may not get specifics — but boy, do they.
“That was a purposeful decision,” Marie McGovern, who co-directed and produced the doc with her StreetSmartVideo partner Martin Dunn, told TheWrap.

HBO released the trailer for its Craig Carton documentary, “Wild Card: The Downfall of a Radio Loudmouth,” and it looks just as nuts as the morning-show jock.
“Wild Card” charts the rise and bizarre fall of prominent New York sports-radio personality Craig Carton, the host of former Wfan 660 morning show “Boomer & Carton.” His running mate from that No. 1 program, former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason, is prominently featured in the doc — as are several of Carton’s other colleagues from those days on top.
Watch the trailer via the video above.
Esiason now shares the Wfan morning show with Gregg Giannotti.
Through a series of first-person interviews with Carton and others, the film reveals how the radio host’s secret insatiable gambling addiction — financed by an illicit ticket-broking business — brought his career to a sudden halt when he was arrested by FBI agents and charged with conspiracy, wire fraud and securities fraud on Sept.

Craig Carton, a figure of some New York renown who used to host a popular morning show on Wfan and CBS Sports Network, was sentenced to 42 months in prison by a federal judge Friday for perpetrating a massive ticket fraud.
Facing millions in gambling debts, which he blamed on an addiction to betting, Carton took part in a scheme that defrauded ticket buyers of $7 million. He had promised victims VIP tickets to sporting events and concerts. Instead of making good on the ducats, he used the proceeds to pay his debts and personal expenses. After his arrest in 2017, he resigned from Wfan. After initially insisting he was innocent of all charges and pleading not guilty, he was convicted last fall.
Prosecutors had recommended a prison term of five to seven years, while Carton pushed for leniency and no prison time. According to a Law360 report from the courtroom, Carton told U.

Last year, the Super Bowl drew 103.4 million total viewers, and while that was the lowest total for the NFL championship game/American cultural event in nine years, it also was the 10th-most-watched program in American TV history. You can expect that number to rise this year with CBS’ broadcast from Atlanta featuring two major-market teams in the Los Angeles Rams and the love-them-or-hate-them-but-always-watch-them New England Patriots, and of course the ads in between that keep the water cooler bubbling for days.
Still, it means more than 200 million Americans won’t watch the game, which means they’ll need something else to look at. Broadcasters and streamers not named CBS or CBS All Access will have you covered again this year on that front, setting up counterprogramming with puppies, cats and marathons galore.

Michelle Beadle just spent a good chunk of time verbally sparring with professional wrestler Ronda Rousey. She’s got another battle looming on Monday morning.
Beadle, the veteran ESPN sportscaster, will team up with popular ESPN radio host Mike Greenberg and former pro-basketball player Jalen Rose to help the Walt Disney-backed sports network open a new front: “Get Up,” a morning show that aims to deliver sports with a little something extra. Or maybe not. But probably.
Can we get back to you in a few weeks?
“Failure is not an option,” says Rose, holding forth in a brand-new studio ESPN designed in Manhattan’s South Street Seaport. “Yes it is,” cracks Beadle, responding to her co-host. “But it’s sort of out of our control.” The set is festooned with neon signs, giant wall screens and a spiral staircase. Viewers will be able to see the sun rise over...

Good news, America ... Boomer Esiason is coming back for another Kitten Bowl! The Hallmark Channel announced the former Cincinnati Bengals Qb will return to call the play-by-play on Feb. 4 as several rescued cats vie for the "national championship of feline football." [[tmz:video id="0_00xk2yqe"]] CBS Radio wasted no time removing all evidence that Craig Carton ever worked at Wfan -- with his old broadcasting partner, Boomer Esiason, even announcing the name of his show has changed. It all went down less than 24 hours after Craig Carton announced his resignation from the "Boomer & Carton Show" -- one of the top sports radio shows in the country. Of course, Carton is being investigated by the feds for allegedly running a bogus...

Craig Carton has received a mixed reaction from fellow media members after being arrested Wednesday for allegedly running a fake-ticket Ponzi scheme. Following the arrest, Carton was dragged across the Twitter coals by NBC Sports’ head baseball writer Craig Calcaterra, who is not a fan. The next morning, Carton’s on-air partner Boomer Esiason shared a nice story with Wfan listeners about a supportive conversation he had in the hallway with Mike Francesa, one of most powerful and successful people in the history of sportstalk radio. Francesa and Carton aren’t exactly buddies either — you may be noticing a pattern here.
