"I love, appreciate and adore all women."--Cee Lo Green
I'm going to start this week off by sending bittersweet farewells to two of my favorite contestants this season. Melanie Martinez and Amanda Brown are both unique, bold, entertaining artists. I can't help but feel America really got it wrong this week. But things turn around quickly: Adam offered Melanie a record deal on the spot. And I can surely attest, Amanda, if you just hang in there and keep trying, good things will most definitely come your way.
These are my favorite performances last week:
Nicholas David-Over the Rainbow
It's a good thing Nicholas sang this song second. Cee Lo assigned September to him first and I was certain Nicholas was going home. Then he sang this little diddy straight from the land of Oz. He was personally connected to this song and it showed.
Trevin Hunte-Walking on Sunshine
No one that I know agrees...

The Voice began its Battle Rounds on Monday, but this time there was a new twist that benefited a few contestants and certainly everyone watching.
One of the major problems with the Battles in the past was that it seemed they would purposefully pit two really talented contestants against each other in order to create an awesome performance that would make that specific episode more enjoyable for fans.
The problem ended up being that after that great moment, one of those two extremely talented singers was completely out of the competition (see: Anthony Evans). That wasn't good for the future of the season. Thanks to the new "steal" option after one coach picks his/her winner, that issue is moot.
In essence The Voice gets to have their moment of cake, and then eat it too as the rest of the season goes on. Let's see how much better that...

Was it all a dream, PopWatchers? These past months, in which I did no blogging, covered no singing competitions, never ended a question with “ PopWatchers” — did I hallucinate them somehow? Or is it possible that your Aunt Whittlz set out on a path in her life that led her from EW, circled through the Thousand Acre Wood, and deposited her right back here, to a PopWatch blog about a singing competition? Am I some sort of demented Tigger with a penchant for self-abuse? You be the judge!
Actually, please don’t. I haven’t missed that part.

The solid duets were flowing like wine in the Cougar Town cul-de-sac during Part Three of The Voice's Battle Rounds. Maybe nobody was quite as impressed as mentor and former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, who said "I wish they woulda done that on the show I was from" about the interesting semifinal format.
Burn!
While they may force a few dissimilar contestants to fight through songs that don't quite fit their styles from time to time, the Battle Rounds have also given the audience an opportunity to not only watch these world famous coaches give in-depth instruction, but to get into it and perform with the contestants in order to help them interpret their respective song.
I absolutely loved watching Blake Shelton rip it up with ALyx on the mini stage in his barn, and I couldn't get enough of Xtina going toe to toe with Jonathas on "No Air.

Granted, there was no Jesse Campbell vs. Anthony Evans showdown this week. But Part Two of The Voice's Battle Round was filled with a number of good performers taking each other on in the ring.
If there is any reason for concern at this point in the competition, it is definitely that the coaches don't have as much opportunity to shine during the Battle Rounds. There just isn't enough time for Blake to crack a million jokes, and for Adam to gloat about winning season one when there is all this talent to showcase on stage. Let's take a look at said talent in this week's Battle Round...

I had to fan myself after watching Anthony Evans and Jesse Campbell's mind-blowing performance on last night's battle rounds. Was it just me, or was Anthony Evans and Jesse Campbell's head-to-head competition the most epic battling on The Voice ever? Sweet lawdy, I felt like I was being taken back to my Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill days! In the two seasons of the show, this was arguably one of the most difficult choices for the judges to make in the battle rounds, as both pastor's kid Anthony Evans and single dad Jesse Campbell's renditions of Alicia Keys's "If I Ain't Got You" were both ridiculously amazing. I was cracking up in disbelief! I thought Anthony's high-pitched "Mariah Carey" moment at the end of the song was head spinning, and it made me want to jump out of my seat, but I totally get why the judges were ultimately...

The battle rounds began on The Voice this week and what an incredible group of pairings there were to start it off. For the most part, the pairings were predictable with a fair amount of surprises and keeping a fair balance, there were also some head scratching pairings that ended up working out for the best. All of the artists had their conflicts to resolve, be it their lack of performance skills, reaching too far or not enough, and the list goes on. Unfortunately while the underdogs did not come out on top, we were still in for quite a show!
Each coach cuts their team in half during the battle round in preparation for the live shows. Even though we were prepared for what was to come, given how the battle round went in season one… this did not take away any nerves. In fact, knowing what was coming...

The blind auditions were a way for these aspiring artists to try and get their foot in the door, literally, by making one of the chairs turn, but that was a cupcake fest: This is where it really starts to heat up. Now that they’ve got their foot in the door, are they going to walk through the door, are they going to run through the door, or are they going to just tear the door down? You saw people who were terrified, and you saw them lose, and you saw people with real confidence completely flourish. The battle...

Carnage! The Voice jammed six battles (disguised as duets) into two hours of damn entertaining TV last night, and they even gayed it up with some Bonnie Tyler, Celine Dion, and a double-fisted helping of Alanis Morissette. But who thrived and who cried? The answer will force one hand into your pocket and the other one into an electrical fire.
Team Adam: Tony Lucca vs. Chris Cauley, U2's "Beautiful Day"
The Voice isn't that smart. It kicked off an episode with two forgettable vocalists (paricularly when pitted against each other -- these dudes amounted to "Cheng vs. Eng" in the same ring) belting the single lamest U2 single I can think of -- with the possible exception of "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" or "Mofo."
"Beautiful Day" is so the "Desert Rose" of the U2 catalog. It sounds like a Saturn commercial, not a legitimate offering.

If you thought last night’s epic vocal contest between Anthony Evans and Jesse Campbell on Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You” was the most memorable battle of the episode, you may not have been looking closely enough at Adam Levine’s frilly quasi-animal print grandpa sweater and Christina Aguilera’s absurd gem-studded fascinator. Both statement pieces were true winners and showed a lot of promise, but you know the rules: Only one can move on!

After watching just one round of the battles this second season, it's safe to say that we should all be glad The Voice kept them around. Why? They may not be perfect, but they are still far more entertaining than the past 11 seasons of American Idol's Hollywood Week.
The first episode of Battles gave us mentoring sessions from a number of stars, a more in depth look at all of The Voice's contestants, and, most importantly, a few brilliant performances that left the coaches, America, and me stunned. Let's get to the action...

The Battle: Both guys sounded great. I liked that Tony took the advice to go for the high notes, because he hit them, and killed it. Chris was great, and the two of them sounded awesome together, but Tony was just much more believable.

This week on The Voice, the coaches prepared to round out their teams of twelve in preparation for the big battle to come. Artists made decisions that they had not initially intended to make when joining teams and coaches made decisions that were very similar to their choices in season one… all while raising the bar. They can’t all be winners. That old adage applies to the dozens of vocalists who’ve already appeared on The Voice‘s second season, but it’s also a fitting way to describe Monday night’s ho-hum episode.

"The Voice" judges Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green proved as picky and discerning as ever on Monday night's fourth round of blind auditions. Several strong performers were turned away as the judges continued to carefully select the contestants they hope will go all the way to the finals — and in turn, win bragging rights for the last judge standing. And Cee Lo continued to inexplicably stroke a white cat during his to-the-camera interviews. "The Voice" is so weird and wonderful ... now, on to the show.

Aguilera got off to a strong start, scoring the night's first two contestants (well, the first two who got picked at all, that is). First up was Jonathas, a 23-year-old...

The Voice's Anthony Evans has joked that he would rather not hear that a mentor nearly pressed their button during his blind audition. The singer from Dallas, Texas became a member of Christina Aguilera's team on Monday night (February 20) following his blind audition performance of 'What's Going On', although fellow coach Cee Lo Green told him afterwards that he had been on the verge of turning around as well. Cee Lo said: "There is a tremble in your voice that is very sensitive and sincere, almost like you're on the verge of crying because you really feel what you're saying. I got emotionally involved. "Everybody can vouch for me behind me that I was just about to hit it then Christina hit it and I was like, 'Damn!'" > Read Digital Spy's full The Voice headlines Aguilera said: "I (more)...

The fourth edition of The Voice's Blind Auditions was highlighted by a number of strong female vocalists. Naia Kete, Charlotte Sometimes, and especially Mathai had me intrigued from their first notes. Who did you think was the most impressive from this week's installment?
Two things from this week's episode need to be noted before getting to the actual auditions:
I will never get tired of watching Blake Shelton bow to the audience after making a comment they enjoyed Carson Daly aggressively cheering for every contestant to get picked while back stage with their families is the funniest thing about this show. I can't tell whether he is sincerely rooting for every single performer, or if he's just feigning it for their friends.
Now let's get to the teams, which are starting to fill up. With only one Blind Audition episode left, every team either needs two or three contestants to fill its squad.
