Hollywood comedy films tend to follow a formula that is easy to follow. Get a few big stars, find a story that more basic the better then stick in some gross out comedy or romance then shake it all together and get a number one movie out of it. They appear to take little thought but they do one thing that is important, know their viewers. We’re the Millers is a film a lot like that, but while stumbling through normalcy actually trips up on something that makes it quite sweet, and that is family values.

New Line Cinema’s latest comedy We’re the Millers is released in UK cinemas this week. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber – who also wrote and directed fan-favorite Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story – the film follows a faux-family who are attempting to smuggle drugs into America.
We got the chance to chat to Thurber recently about the improvisation on set, changes to the script, and whether or not any sequels are in the works.
The script for We’re The Millers has been hanging around for a bit, what attracted you to the project and what changes happened from the initial script?
“The original script was written by Bob Fisher and Steve Faber, and they were the writers of Wedding Crashers, and I think they sold it right after Wedding Crashers so I think it’s existed for almost a decade in Hollywood, which by Hollywood standards is very old.

A small-time drug dealer hires three misfits to pose as a squeaky-clean family in this goofy road movie
Bob Fisher and Steve Faber co-wrote the successful but charmless Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn romp Wedding Crashers in 2005. This is better: a genial broad comedy directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (who gave us Dodgeball) about a small-time drug dealer who must appease a crime kingpin by bringing a vast amount of marijuana into the Us from Mexico. He figures he won't get stopped at the border if he rents an Rv and hires three dysfunctional misfits so they can all pose as a squeaky-clean family. Jason Sudeikis is the bogus drug-dealing "dad"; Jennifer Aniston is the broke lapdancer Rose who agrees to be his beaming, wholesome wife, and mom to their two fake kids. It's a goofy road movie with some nice gags. Hang on for the outtake bloopers over the credits...

Let's face it: any comedy where Jennifer Aniston gets top billing should set alarm bells ringing. We loved her in Friends, but her film career has been characterised by hollow evocations of Rachel in sub-par rom-coms and more recently, marked by a certain desperation to get her kit off and be a bit saucy. Well, crank the sirens, because her latest comedy sees her starring as a stripper...

Chicago – There was a point in “We’re the Millers” when the story fell off the table like a Slinky from a mountaintop. It’s as if other writers took over from a far superior dark comedy, and injected “heart” and middle age “stripping.” This all adds up to a difficult 110 minutes of lost life time.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
What began with decent laughs and with Jason Sudeikis rattling off fast-talk dialogue like he was in a demented Howard Hawks movie, turns into a domestic comedy of the stupidest order, with an idiot plot that defies logic, gravity and star power. Jennifer Aniston does the obligatory last “rebellious” role as a stripper who never takes her clothes off, before she is destined for mommy roles or another sitcom, playing a mommy. The rest of the embarrassed cast – with attention particularly paid to Ed Helms and Luis Guzmán – trot out the lame situations...

-- "We're the Millers" is an identity comedy with identity issues.
Jason Sudeikis plays a pot dealer who, as a disguise for smuggling a huge shipment of weed, forms a fake family to drive an Rv across the Mexico border. He gathers local stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston), surly homeless teenager Casey (Emma Roberts) and his young, naive neighbor Kenny (Will Poulter).
The whole concept has two motives: to lampoon the idea of the traditional all-American family, and as an excuse to get Aniston to take off her clothes. Both are worthy endeavors, but everything in "We're the Millers" feels forced – a hodgepodge of comedic rhythms made to lurch from one crude gag to another.
Despite obvious comedic talents, Sudeikis and Aniston have each had difficulty finding their place in the movies, and neither really fit their parts: small-time Denver pot dealer (dispatched for the pick-up by Ed Helms' polite...

We’re The Millers
Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber
Written by Bob Fisher, Steve Faber, Sean Anders, and John Morris
USA, 2013
We’re The Millers is a mighty schizophrenic movie, sometimes shuffling from plot point to plot point as if you can literally see a committee of studio executives hovering next to the actors, offering notes about how likable the characters should be or which touchstones of popular culture should be referenced. And then, sometimes, almost by the sheer will and force of the cast, there are laughs to be had in what is an arguably ridiculous premise. In the end, We’re The Millers is just so-so, a fitfully funny patchwork comedy that relies too much on paying homage to far better pieces of modern popular culture.
Jason Sudeikis is Dave, a shiftless small-time pot dealer in Denver who finds himself at the end of his rope when he...

There weren't so many LOLs as there were Salts—you know, Smiled a Little Then Stopped—when it came to the upcoming crude comedy We're the Millers. What seemed like comedic gold fell short with critics, who reviewed the Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston flick before it's release this weekend. Written by Bob Fisher and Steve Faber (The Wedding Crashers) and Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine), the Rawson Marshall Thurber-helmed film tells the story of a fake (and raunchy) family of four that travel to Mexico to smuggle some drugs. Here's what some critics had to say about We're the Millers... •Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter said,...

There's no secret to the comedy in We're the Millers, it's pretty low-brow and it's not exactly well constructed. The development of the narrative is sloppy and for all intents and purposes it's a film filled with "trailer moments" as it's more interested in delivering comedy that shocks rather than developing a series of punchlines and running gags. There's no problem with this, and there are plenty of laughs, but the laziness in nearly all aspects of the film's creation are glaringly obvious and once you round the final turn it falls to melodramatic pieces. A drug dealer (Jason Sudeikis) has his stash stolen and is beholden to his boss (Ed Helms) for a lot of money, but he's given an out (of sorts) when he's told he must go to Mexico to pick up a load of marijuana and smuggle it back into the States. Without much of a...

Rawson Marshall Thurber's directorial debut was 2004's "Dodgeball," a surprise summer hit that grossed $167 million worldwide. Nine years and one indie later (2008's "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh"), Thurber's back with another summer movie that could surprise at the box office: "We're the Millers," a twisted and often very funny road trip comedy that stars Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston as, respectively, a drug dealer and a stripper trying to bring a bunch of pot into the U.S. from Mexico by pretending to be married. (Emma Roberts and Will Poulter star as their fake kids; it's all very complicated.)
"It had been alive in various stages of development for almost eight years," Thurber said of the R-rated script, originally written by Bob Fisher and Steve Faber. "I think it was alive for that long for a couple of reasons: One is that the premise is such a fun, commercial...

The audience at Thursday night's premiere of We're the Millers in New York spent much of the movie laughing uproariously at the fictional follies of Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts and Ed Helms. But when co-writer Steve Faber first started working on the script, roughly 11 years ago, he was dealing with a very serious reality: non-Hodgkin lymphoma. As he was undergoing chemotherapy, he wrote the first draft of the film while he spent a year and a half in the hospital, at times not thinking he'd make it out, Faber tells The Hollywood Reporter at Thursday's premiere

Jennifer Aniston smouldered in a plum coloured strapless satin dress as she attended the We're the Millers film premiere in New York yesterday (August 1).
The 44-year-old actress donned the figure-hugging Burberry number as she posed with co-star Jason Suidekis, who couldn't keep his eyes off Aniston's form-fitting outfit as the pair arrived at the Ziegfeld Theater.
Aniston plays as a stripper who pretends to be the wife of a veteran drug dealer (played by Sudeikis) and the mother of runaway homeless teenager (Emma Roberts) and a geeky local teenager (Will Poulter) in the comedy directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber.
The screenplay is penned by writing duos Bob Fisher and Steve Faber (Wedding Crashers), and Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine).
The star's fiancé Justin Theroux skipped the red carpet but later joined Aniston for the movie's after party.
Speaking about their wedding plans recently, Aniston told reporters:...

After sharing next to no screen time in the brilliant Horrible Bosses, Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston will thankfully be front and centre together in We’re the Millers, which promises to be one of the best comedies of the summer.

Watch: Jason Sudeikis Does A Pretty Good Bane Impression In Red Band Trailer For 'We're The Millers'
In the works for years, with numerous directors and stars coming and going through various incarnations, "We're The Millers" finally firmed up a cast, got in front of cameras and has been made with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston leading an ensemble cast that includes Emma Roberts, Nick Offerman, Ed Helms, Kathryn Hahn and many more. The result? Well, another comedy where an excuse is made for Aniston to strut around in her underwear... Spanning nearly three minutes, this red band trailer wastes no time in giving up the goods in what we hope aren't the funniest moments in the movie because...they aren't that funny... Penned by "Wedding Crashers" writers Bob Fisher and Steve Faber, the story follows a loser who is forced (for some reason) to drive back a shitload of weed from Mexico. In order to dupe the authorities, he puts together a fake family and herds...

Reuniting after the comedy genius of Horrible Bosses, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis will be back on the big screen this summer in We’re The Millers, which is pretty much guaranteed to be one of the best comedies of the year, let alone the summer season.
The film is one we’ve been looking forward to for some time, and now Warner Bros. have released the first trailer, setting the tone nicely ahead of its August release date.
David Burke is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash,...

Tim Story's Ride Along looks like it's about to pick up another passenger in John Leguizamo. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the Kick-Ass 2 star will play an undercover cop alongside Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. The action comedy arrives from New Line Cinema and features Cube as a rogue cop with a soft spot for his sister. When she reveals she's engaged to an upper-crust white psychiatrist, the cop sets out to destroy the relationship by inviting his future brother-in-law (Hart) on a ride-along. Chris Bender and Jc Spink will be executive producers and Cube and Larry Brezner also will be involved in a producing capacity. Greg Coolidge wrote the script, and Steve Faber and Bob Fisher did a rewrite. (Photo Credit: Joseph Marzullo / WENN.com)...

First there was Larry David & Greg Mottola, then Jon Hamm signed, and, now, we have Michael Keaton. Variety reports that the oft-missed actor will make another reemergence for this incredible collaboration, an improvised comedy not unlike the main star’s own Curb Your Enthusiasm. Great as this casting may be, I think the best bit of news to come with Variety’s story is our first plot outline.
David, Jeff Schaffer, Alec Berg, and David Mandel have all worked on the treatment, which, we’re now told, will see the Seinfeld co-creator and Hamm play two friends who each “invest in an electric-car company with different goals in mind.” Said company ends up making a profit, and their respective plans create a divide. Keaton fits in by playing Stumpo, friend of David‘s and “crazy businessman.”

Kevin Hart Now Starring in Everything; Will Star Alongside Ice Cube in Once-Languishing ‘Ride Along’
The power of casting Kevin Hart is now so overwhelming that the actor/comedian can rescue even the most plagued of projects. Hart, recently cast in such varied fare as the About Last Night remake, an uninspired Kevin James comedy, and a buddy cop comedy with Seth Rogen, has now signed on to star alongside Ice Cube in Ride Along for Universal. The comedy will be directed by Tim Story, and it reunites the director with his Think Like a Man star (Hart) and producer (Will Packer). Ice Cube will also produce the project, alongside Matt Alvarez and Larry Brezner. The film was first announced back in 2009 (via a report from Variety), but has languished at New Line until now, with Universal Pictures picking it up out of turnaround. Deadline Venice reports that this was “partly over trying to figure out the leads, but Universal was ready to move quickly in reteaming Story, Hart...

Though he’s still a newcomer to the business, Narnia’s Will Poulter is still making waves, having just been cast alongside Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis in the pot comedy We’re the Millers.
The film stars Sudeikis as a “a veteran pot dealer who creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico.” Aniston will play the the hooker pretending to be his wife while 19-year-old Poulter, who played the rambunctious yet good-hearted Eustace Scrubb in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, will star as Kenny, a teenager who Sudeikis’ character pretends is his son. Poulter, whose last film was the Dexter Fletcher-directed indie drama Wild Bill, will begin shooting Millers on July 18.

I guess a couple of Hollywood players liked Wanderlust. (Smart cats.) Following Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Max Greenfield (Parks and Recreation), and Jason Mantzoukas (The Dictator) all… converging for They Came Together, Deadline reports that Ed Helms will join co-writer and director David Wain‘s new film.
He’ll play a fellow only known as “Eggbert,” an accountant and the romantic interest to Poehler‘s character; she herself is a small business owner struggling against a corporate giant and its head (Rudd). Does it all sound standard? That might be the point. Read a breakdown of the film, written with Michael Showalter, right below:
“When Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler) meet, it’s hate at first sight; his big corporation is the one that threatens to shut down her quirky knick-knack store. I’ve never actually seen Parks and Recreation — send all the angry letters you can muster; just don’t forget the stamps — so the alleged greatness of Nick Offerman, though not lost on me, isn’t something I’m really privy to, either. (His three-minute appearance in 21 Jump Street was funny.) But, knowing the guy’s huge fanbase, it’s easy to bet that Ron Swanson (give me that much) fans will be pleased as punch by an announcement that not one, but two potential-filled parts are coming his way.
When talking to BuzzSugar (via ThePlaylist), Offerman was quoted as saying that, at different points over the year, he’ll be filming Toy’s House and We’re the Millers, two comedies of seemingly stark shades. Jordan Vogt-Roberts will make his feature debut on the former, a Chris Galletta-penned story the Greater Columbus Film Commission describes as a “heartfelt comedy...

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis are in talks to join We're the Millers, a dysfunctional family road trip comedy. The film was originally picked up in 2002, but has been through numerous changes with different writers, directors, and stars. The script was originally written by Wedding Crashers Steve Faber and Bob Fisher. Although Aniston has been in talks for several weeks, negotiations have yet to yield a firm commitment. Aniston and Sudeikis are not first time co-stars. The two starred in New Line comedy Horrible Bosses, in addition to appearing together in Sony's The Bounty Hunter. We're the Millers is centered around a drug dealer whose last mission is to bring 1,400 pounds of marijuana from Mexico to the U.S, so he creates a fake family to help him execute the job. Rawson Marshall Thurber is set to direct.

Jennifer Aniston is in talks to join a new raunchy comedy at New Line Cinema called We're the Millers. According to Deadline, the movie is "about a pot dealer who pulls together a fake wife and two kids to pose as an Rv road-tripping family so that he can smuggle 1000 pounds of pot cross country." There's a possibilty that she'll be joined by her Horrible Bosses co-star Jason Sudekis. Aniston would play the fake wife, who’s actually a hooker, and Sudekis would play the pot smuggler.
The movie is set to be directed by Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball), and it's described as being a "warped Vacation" kind of film. The movie comes from a script written by Wedding Crashers scribes Bob Fisher and Steve Faber. I really enjoyed Aniston in Horrible Bosses, and hopefully now she'll start picking better film projects to work on.

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis are ready to get dysfunctional.
The "Horrible Bosses" co-stars are in talks to go mobile and reunite in the road trip comedy, "We're the Millers," according to Risky Business.
"We're the Millers" centers on a drug dealer who creates a fake family to help him pull off one last job that involves transporting over a thousand pounds of marijuana across the U.S.-Mexican border. The film originated with "Wedding Crashers" writers Steve Faber and Bob Fisher but has gone through a seemingly never-ending mix of writers, directors and actors since it was first picked up in 2002.
Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis were seen together last summer in "Horrible Bosses," though they weren't "paired up" as horrible boss and employee (Aniston's tortured subordinate was played by Charlie Day and Sudeikis' insufferable superior was played by Colin Farrell). The duo also appeared together in "The Bounty Hunter.

New Line clearly hasn’t given up on the idea of shepherding long-gestating pot-smuggling comedy We’re The Millers onto screens. The latest names linked to the script are Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis. First announced back in 2006 when Steve Buscemi was lined up to star, We’re The Millers has been stuck in development traffic ever since. Directors including Peter Cattaneo and Burr Steers have come and gone and the script, originally by Wedding Crashers writers Steve Faber and Bob Fisher, has gone through numerous drafts. With Dodgeball’s Rawson Thurber now in the director’s chair, the basic concept remains the same: Sudeikis would play a pot dealer who recruits a fake wife (Aniston, as a prostitute) and two kids (juvenile delinquents) to pose as a family so he can smuggle 1000 pounds of weed cross country in an Rv.If they both sign on, it would mark a reunion for the pair,...

Seeing as Horrible Bosses have abounded whenever We’re the Millers comes up, this news is all too fitting. According to Deadline, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis are looking to join the pot-based comedy that, up until now, was set to star Jason Bateman. Charlie Day is confused and frustrated at the moment.
Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball) is directing a script from Bob Fisher and Steve Faber (Wedding Crashers), which centers on a drug dealer who, in one last job, “pulls together a fake wife and two kids to pose as an Rv road-tripping family.” The end goal? Smuggle 1,000 pounds of marijuana across the U.S.-Mexico border. Sudeikis, naturally, would be the pot dealer; Aniston is expected to play the prostitute-turned-fake mother.
Comparing those roles with their typical onscreen parts, I might see the both of them as a little too “clean” for such seedy roles — even if Aniston...
