Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 2001.
Jazz flugelhornist and trumpeter.
Worked in Los Angeles for a time as a hotel janitor and a hospital file clerk before joining Lionel Hampton's orchestra in 1952.
Spent much time in Austria (after marrying a Viennese banker) becoming a member of the national radio big band.
Formed the Jazztet with Benny Golson in the late 1950's.
Had an identical twin brother, the double bass player Addison Farmer.
In 1989, he created a trumpet-flugelhorn hybrid, called 'flumpet', constructed for him by instrument maker David Monette.
