The "Futurama" character Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth (voiced by Billy West) was named after Philo T. Farnsworth (1906 - 1971), the inventor of the world's first all-electronic image pickup device, better known to the masses as the television tube. The real Farnsworth has many other patents besides, mostly involving electronic imaging, radio, or nuclear fusion. He is one of the most important engineers in the history of broadcast media.
Prof. Farnsworth on "Futurama" is also an inventor with multiple patents, although his inventions tend to drift into the realm of crackpot lunacy. Prof. Farnsworth has an entire bank of doomsday devices, invented a smelloscope that can detect the odors of distant heavenly bodies, once kept a monkey whose tiny bowler hat granted him extreme intelligence, and often makes use of the fing-longer, which is a glove sporting an index finger the length of a billiard cue. That latter device is used more often than one might assume.

Philo wants to get more dough from its over-the-top TV subscriber base, adding Epix and Starz as premium options — the first add-ons for the cheap, entertainment-oriented service.
Subscribers to Philo’s $20 monthly bundle of 58 entertainment, lifestyle and nonfiction networks can add MGM’s Epix for an extra $6 per month and Lionsgate’s Starz for $9 per month.
Aimed at cord-cutters and “cord-nevers” who find traditional pay-tv too pricey, Philo keeps programming costs down by omitting sports, news and local broadcast networks. The company’s investors include A+E Networks, AMC Networks, Discovery and ViacomCBS — and the core of the Philo lineup comprises nets owned by those four programming groups, including A&e, AMC, Comedy Central, Food Network, Hgtv, ID, Lifetime, MTV, Nickelodeon, OWN and We TV.
To access Epix and Starz, customers can subscribe at philo.com for a free seven-day trial. Through July 13, Philo customers who sign up for either service are...

There are a number of television personalities celebrating birthdays today, including "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, "Friends" actor Matthew Perry, "The Closer" star Kyra Sedgwick, "Entourage" cast member Kevin Dillon, Peter Gallagher (formerly of "The O.C."), "Full House" lead John Stamos and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor/director Jonathan Frakes. But today is also the birthday of the original TV star: Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of the picture tube that made television broadcasts possible. Farnsworth was a farmer from Utah who displayed a nose for science and dreamed up the idea for electronic television when he was only 15 years old. He managed to construct his concept by the time he was 21, though his invention only triggered a massive legal battle against RCA, which was trying to claim Farnsworth patent as their own. Farnsworth was eventually paid for his creation, though the battle sent him into depression and seclusion for many years.
