Candy and Daddy by Anton Perich (1972)
Starring: Candy Darling, Taylor Mead and Craig Vandenburgh
After living as a poet and a painter in Paris, France in the mid-1960s, Croatian-born artist Anton Perich moved to New York City where he found part-time work as a busboy at the notorious hangout spot Max’s Kansas City. There, he met and hung out with several of Andy Warhol’s “Superstars,” such as Andrea Feldman, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn and Candy Darling.
Documenting the scene at Max’s, Perich took photographs and Super 8mm films, but he would become most well-known in the early ’70s as a pioneering underground videomaker.
In the book Your Fifteen Minutes Are Up by Catherine O’Sullivan Shorr, Perich notes that he didn’t speak English upon arriving in NYC, but he formed a bond with actor Taylor Mead, with whom he could speak French.

Everybody wants Joe. In the Paul Morrissey directed Heat from 1972, Warhol superstar Joe Dallesandro plays an ex-child star who now sleeps around to get by in Hollywood. Among his conquests is an aging actress, Sally (Sylvia Myles), whose glamorous heyday has long passed her by. While she wants to help Joe attain his dreams, her goodwill may be undone by her psychotic, potentially lesbian daughter Jessie (Andrea Feldman).
This was the third film in Morrissey’s so-called “trash trilogy” that also included the films Flesh (1968) and Trash (1970). All three films, plus the Andy Warhol directed Lonesome Cowboys (1968) will be screening as part of a Dallesandro retrospective at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival on August 19-28.

Self-serving link first again: My latest index-y type project on Bad Lit is the DVD Underground, a list of DVDs and DVD box sets of classic underground films. This is part of my timeline project. So, please check it out. But, more importantly, check these out: Here’s a fantastic interview you have to read: Miss Rosen chats with filmmaker, photographer, exhibitor and general all around underground troublemaker Anton Perich. Plus, the piece is illustraed with Perich’s wonderful B&W pictures of Candy Darling, Robert Mapplethorpe and Andrea Feldman, a.k.a. Andrea Whips. Can you identify the filmmaker in the photo at this groovy ’60s San Francisco Country Joe and the Fish performance? Seriously, the blogger over there wants to know. Making Light of It has some very cool stills from Philippe Grandrieux’s La Vie Nouvelle, that appears to be some sort of homage to Wavelength or something.
