With his Emmy nomination, composer Alan Menken is now officially vying for an even greater honor -- the E.G.O.T. The acronym stands, of course, for Emmy-Grammy-Oscar-Tony. Menken, a showbiz veteran, collected Oscars for his iconic songs and scores in Disney classics Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Pocahontas, and he has the most Oscars of any person living (eight). His Grammy came just last year, won with Glenn Slater for the song “I See The Light” in Disney’s Tangled. And months later, Menken and Jack Feldman collected a Tony for their original score

Why do we like the things we like? Sure, this may be a almost hilariously simplistic and loaded question, but one that can be fascinating to consider depending on the topic. Think of the major touchstones of nostalgia for most people born in the 1980s. Some are comic strips, such as Calvin and Hobbes; some are TV shows, such as Saved by the Bell; and some are movies, such as The Goonies. For many people, this the pop culture of their childhoods. This is their childhoods as a whole. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t really wade into nostalgic waters that often.
I realize, of course, that saying I don’t get too nostalgic for my childhood, or for a time that never fully existed in...

Hugh Jackman had a very special night at the Tony Awards on Sunday - his actress wife Deborra-lee Furness surprised him with the Special Tony Award for his work onstage.
The Australian actor jetted to his adopted New York City for the prizegiving during a break in the filming of Les Miserables in Europe and was left speechless when his partner strutted out onstage to honour her "special man" with one of the night's big trophies.
Furness admitted she was thrilled to have her husband back after four months of filming on location, but she joked, "There's nothing more romantic after not seeing your husband for four months than to have our first night back together on a Broadway stage with 12 million people watching."
The actor stepped up onstage and told the audience, "She's (Furness) never kept a secret her entire life. (She said), 'I'm just off to the loo (restroom),' and I was like, 'Ok, see you in a bit!'"
Jackman ended his acceptance speech by urging his "incredible" wife to share the spotlight with him and told her, "I love you with all my heart. I know how much you hate public speaking; this is probably the greatest thing you've ever done for me. Really. It means the world to me."
He wasn't the only actor paying a heartfelt tribute to his partner at the Tonys - British comedian James Corden singled out his girlfriend Julia Carey for a special mention during his Best Actor acceptance speech.
He said, "My girlfriend, Julia, gave birth to our son, like, five days before we started rehearsals and she's my baby momma and I can't wait to marry her.
"I would not be holding this if it wasn't for her. She made me say 'us' instead of 'I' and 'we' instead of 'me' and I love her."
Elsewhere, it was a huge night for the stage musical adaptation of hit movie Once, which picked up eight of its 10 nominations, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for star Steve Kazee.

Peter & the Starcatcher was another big hit at the Tonys, claiming four awards, while Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, The Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, Newsies, and Nice Work if you Can Get It picked up two gongs apiece.

New York—The bittersweet musical "Once" captured eight Tony Awards on Sunday, including best musical direction, best lead actor in a musical and the top musical prize itself.
The inventive play "Peter and the Starcatcher" was next with five awards, but most every show came away with something to crow about.
Bruce Norris' "Clybourne Park," the remarkably perceptive Pulitzer Prize-winning play about race and real estate, won the best play Tony.
Audra McDonald was named best lead actress in a musical and her "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" was named best musical revival. This is her fifth Tony Award, tying the competitive record held by Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris.
"I was a little girl with a potbelly and afro puffs, hyperactive and overdramatic. And I found the theater, and I found my home," McDonald said. Looking at her daughter, she said her big night wasn't as wonderful as...

Broadway celebrated itself Sunday night - and crowned Once and playwright Bruce Norris's Clybourne Park as the season's best musical and drama, in a star-studded evening that third-time host Neil Patrick Harris called "the 66th annual Tony Awards, or, as we like to call it, Fifty Shades of Gay." Clybourne Park, which also won a 2011 Pulitzer Prize, takes its cues from Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun, about developments in a Chicago neighborhood after the Younger family has moved in and moved on. The best play Tony was that show's only win; it was bested in...

"Once," the stage version of the Oscar-winning independent film, dominated the 66th annual Tony Awards, taking home a total of eight awards including best musical, direction of a musical, and in a surprise win, Steve Kazee as best actor in a musical. The team of producers indicated in the press room afterwards that the Tony wins might mean extra cities added the show's recently announced tour. The Tonys were presented in a three-hour ceremony from Manhattan's Beacon Theater on Sunday night. "Clybourne Park," Bruce Norris's satiric Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy-drama riff on Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun,...

It’s a big day for the musical Once, but not for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, in the Tony Award nominations out this morning. Once — a romantic comedy involving a flower seller, a street musician, and a vacuum cleaner repairman — received 11 nominations including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, and Best Actress in a Musical. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess also fared well with 10 nominations, including Best Musical. But the troubled Spider-Man production is only a candidate for two awards, for scenic design and costume design. The awards will be broadcast June 10 on CBS. Here are the nominations: Best Play Clybourne Park (Author: Bruce Norris) ;Other Desert Cities (Author: Jon Robin Baitz); Peter and the Starcatcher (Author: Rick Elice); Venus in Fur (Author: David Ives) Best Musical Leap of Faith; Newsies; Nice Work If You Can Get It; Once Best Book Of A Musical Lysistrata Jones (Douglas Carter Beane...

"Newsies" is the clear frontrunner in the race for Best Musical at the upcoming Tony Awards. All but two of our 12 Experts are predicting it will prevail at the 66th annual edition of these top theater kudos on June 10. Watch the experts discuss the race in this video chat with Gold Derby editor Tom O'Neil. "Newsies" is a stage adaptation of the 1992 Disney film about the delivery boys' strike against New York City newspapers in 1899. It features music by eight-time Oscar champ and three-time Tony contender Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman with a book by four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. Menken reaped Tony bids for his scores to "Beauty and the Beast," "The Little Mermaid" and "Sister Act." Fierstein’s won Tonys for writing and starring in "Torch Song Trilogy," the book of "La Cage aux Folles" and his lead role in "Hairspray." Bac...

"Newsies the Musical" has all of the earmarks of a Disney megahit: orphaned children, villains, a clear study of good versus evil, catchy numbers and accessible dancing. There's a chaste romance and a happy ending.
It also has all of the earmarks of a Broadway hit: excellent songs, a dreamy leading man, a clever set and a genuine cause to rally around.
Based on the 1992 movie flop, what's going on at the Nederlander Theatre, with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and book by Harvey Fierstein, is a non-stop, aggressively buoyant musical that will likely run for ages.
Jeremy Jordan just continues to be more wonderful in each show. He was a standout in "Rock of Ages" and "West Side Story." In "Bonnie & Clyde," which ran for just December, he was terrific. Now he's commanding as the charismatic Jack Kelly, leader of urchins who hawk papers on...
