The union that covers Broadway theater cleaners, porters and matrons, 32Bj Seiu, announced that it had reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract with the Broadway League, the industry association representing theater owners and producers at more than 30 New York theaters. The new deal will require the Broadway League to make weekly contributions to the union's pension fund beginning in 2010, and will provide members with a 6.2-percent raise to be instituted incrementally beginning in the contract's second year."The workers who keep the theaters clean are as much a part of the Great White Way as the plays, actors, crews and patrons," Hector Figueroa, 32Bj secretary-treasurer, said in a statement. More than 260 members of 32Bj Seiu, the union that includes theater cleaners, porters and matrons, voted Dec. 15 to empower their negotiating committee to declare a strike at the more than 30 Broadway League theaters."Today the members sent a strong message to the League," Hector Figueroa, the union's secretary treasurer, said in a statement. "The people who clean these celebrated theaters demand a fair contract with higher wages, a secure retirement and improved access to healthcare."Negotiators for the union and the Broadway League will meet again Dec. 17 in what the union describes as "the last scheduled bargaining date." According to a Variety report, 32Bj has already reached out to the other legit unions, such as Actors' Equity Association, to explore whether they would honor a cleaners' strike.
