Bye, Barbie.
Warner Bros. released Greta Gerwig’s Barbie last summer, on July 21, 2023, and it became an instant pop culture phenomenon before going on to end the year as the No. 1 movie of the year thanks to a $1.445 billion dollar finish. The pink-a-palooza continued with an awards season run — capped by eight Oscar nominations including one for best picture — that’s come complete with a high fashion promo tour thanks to producer and star Margot Robbie.
But now that the Oscars are just hours away, the A-lister revealed what her plans are come next week during a brief interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night before heading into Chanel and Charles Finch’s 15th annual pre-Oscars dinner at Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills. But first, Robbie was keen to name two of her favorite Chanel looks she’s worn recently.

Prolific Italian producer Lorenzo Mieli is known for backing Luca Guadagnino (“Bones and All”), Paolo Sorrentino, and Angelina Jolie (“Without Blood”; she also stars in his Pablo Larrain production “Maria”). However, his first American film, Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” was a very different kind of challenge.
“I would have never thought of myself as someone able to put together financing,” Mieli said on the phone from Italy. “I understood that in this moment in time, as producers, we want to protect the job of filmmakers. This is what we need to do.”
Based on Presley’s memoir “Elvis and Me,” Mieli struggled to hold the project together: first against resistance from the Elvis Presley estate, and then having to find another international distributor after Sony fell out in response to the estate withholding rights to Presley’s music.
In the end, all of the sow’s ears became silk purses.

That Harrison Ford sure has some stamina for someone in their 81st year.
What’s the secret I ask him?
“You know what the secret is,” he responded.
“Rock ‘n’ roll and the other two things.”
What two other things?
“Sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. That’s the secret but now it’s not a secret,” a bad-boy twinkle in his eye as he spoke.
Ford and Calista Flockhart were guests at Charles Finch’s A Rabbit’s Foot annual Filmmakers Dinner in Cannes on Friday night.

For as long as I can remember the event had been held at Eden Roc, but this year Finch and his partners switched to Fred L’écailler seafood restaurant, out on the eastern peninsula, past the Palm Beach. Always cracks me up when chef patron Fred Garbellini describes himself as “just a humble fisherman.”
Strictly speaking I guess he is.

Cannes is ready to party again with the likes of Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, Alicia Vikander, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett all set for a Côte d’Azur hoedown. Here’s a (non-exhaustive) look at some of festival festivities on deck at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off Tuesday and runs through May 27.
The return of the Carlton Hotel following a whopping $380 million renovation is perhaps symbolic of the reemergence of shindigs at the festival following the pandemic. ”We were closed for 26 months,” sighed the Carlton’s general manager Carlo Stragiotto as he welcomed us in the opulent lobby.
“We have created new spaces and renovated old ones,” Stragiotto proclaimed, then boasted that the hotel has space enough “to host four or five parties at the same time each night, if needed.”

Jonathan Majors is making sure to keep his body in shape.
The actor has created quite a stir for his physique in “Creed III,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the Sundance Film Festival favorite “Magazine Dreams.” Majors tells Variety that he’ll work out not once, but twice before the Oscars on Sunday.
“I’m going to get up and go to the gym, have a big breakfast, wash my face and then I’ll really scrub my face because I’ll be presenting tomorrow,” Majors said at the Chanel and Charles Finch pre-Oscar dinner at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday night. “I’ll probably go to the gym twice. His pre-Oscars breakfast? “I’m staying at this hotel with a really great steak so probably a wagyu steak. Protein is good.

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

Exclusive: Charles Finch (Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love) is as English as they come, but Hollywood runs through his veins. Having written movies, produced a few, directed three; managed movie stars and built brands, and published high-end cultural magazines, he decided “smack in the middle of Covid, in my late fifties,” that he wanted to go back to making movies.
He has set up a small film company that he calls Standalone. Finch has a relationship with Columbia Pictures and he’ll formally announce a development deal with that studio next month. The entrepreneur also has a project with Netflix.
Finch told us that he has a slate of some 15 to 20 projects. Included in his group of filmmaking collaborators are directors Josie Rourke (Mary Queen of Scots), Tom Hooper (Les Miserables), Marina Zenovich (Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind), Simon Curtis (Downton Abbey: A New Era), and Florian Zeller (The Father...

Chanel and Charles Finch Dinner
Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, March 26
It sounds like “Belfast” director Kenneth Branagh and the film’s Ciarán Hinds will be at the Oscars. It was unclear if they could attend after both contracted Covid at the BAFTA Awards in London. “I know Ciarán is all clear,” Caitríona Balfe told Variety before heading into the Chanel and Charles Finch’s annual pre-Oscar dinner. “I think [Branagh] is, too. I think he’s good.”
Henry Golding said it was nice to see Hollywood reopening for Oscar festivities. “I think it’s great and it’s about time,” he told Variety. “Chanel has made sure everyone has had a Pcr test and that’s a step further than a...

London is getting ready to ring in the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, returning to an in-person ceremony live from the Royal Albert Hall after a scaled-down hybrid format amid the Covid crisis last year. The weekend is rife with festivities planned to honor nominees and winners, but also has a slightly different look than in pre-pandemic times — most events require a lateral-flow test taken within 24 hours, for example.
Also, the awards ceremony, hosted by Rebel Wilson, will kick off at 5pm local time on Sunday (airing two hours later on BBC 1 and on Britbox in the U.S.). This is a start that’s earlier than usual, but is in line with 2021, while the entire Sunday schedule has shifted up this year versus 2020.

Daphne Rubin-Vega’s face may be on an “In the Heights” billboard on 41st Street in Times Square, but her son isn’t so impressed. “He is 16, so I am not the coolest person at all on the planet,” Rubin-Vega tells me. “I’m like, ‘Just so you know, I’m the most badass mom you could ever have.’ He just gives me this look and goes, ‘Yeah, well, next time try for 42nd Street.’ My family keeps me on my toes.”
Joking aside, Rubin-Vega appreciates what seeing a film about a Latino community could mean to aspiring Brown performers. She says she had few role models to aspire to. For example, she loved watching “The Sound of Music,” but Julie Andrews was “the last person” she thought of when dreaming of becoming an actor. “I just wanted to achieve that feeling — whatever that was that she was doing when...

Andra Day is hosting a Covid-safe Oscar afterparty.
The singer-actor, who is nominated for a best actress statuette for her work as Billie Holiday in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” will hold court after the Academy Awards at Spring Place LA, a private members-only club in Beverly Hills. Director Lee Daniels and co-stars Trevante Rhodes and Rob Morgan are expected to join Day at the soiree, which will have a capacity of just 80 people.
An on-site rapid test will be mandatory for all attendees.
“No one can enter tonight unless they are Covid tested in our testing facility. Spring Place has secured the services of a company to build this on site and to specifically handle testing,” a Spring Place rep tells Variety. “Guests may enter with a negative test and then they are allowed to go into the restaurant, no matter if they’re in possession of a vaccine card or not.

It may be a stretch to refer to Lionel Atwill as a horror icon, but damned if he wasn’t a reliable utility player in the genre through the 1930s and ’40s. As a stage-actor-turned-film-star, he seemed to be the go-to for adding a dash of British gravitas to a supporting role. In fact, he starred in every Universal-produced Frankenstein movie after Bride as different characters ranging from inspectors, doctors, and other inspectors. In fact, Mel Brooks fans will be at least tangentially aware that his work as Young Frankenstein’s one-armed Inspector Kemp being a direct parody of Atwill’s Inspector Krogh from Son of Frankenstein. Atwill also dipped his toe into the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes universe, including a supporting part in Hound of the Baskervilles and even a turn as Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon.

With the BAFTA Film Awards fast approaching this Sunday, London is poised to start swinging into revelry from Friday through to the wee hours of Monday morning.
The party roster this year as compared to last is slightly different, but that shouldn’t dampen the spirit of the home stretch towards the Oscars on February 9 in what has been a very condensed season.
One of the biggest shifts is to see several studios with a horse in the races pull together to pull off a mega fête on Sunday night at Soho House. After the annual gala dinner that follows the BAFTA ceremony at Grosvenor House, no less than eOne, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony and Universal will welcome winners, nominees and other guests scattered throughout the multi-tiered Georgian building on Greek Street. Their collective films include 1917, Knives Out, Bombshell, Rocketman, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Little Women, among others.

BAFTA weekend is upon us as nominees and execs prep for London revelry throughout Sunday night’s awards and into the wee small hours afterwards. Last year, we saw a contrast in the pre- and post-festivities as new hosts stepped up to take over from The Weinstein Company, which had fronted some of the hottest tickets in town until the company was engulfed by scandal.
This year there are even more exclusive soirées to choose from (or to be chosen by). While Sunday sees eOne, Fox and Lionsgate return to Soho House’s Greek Street hub in a repeat of what was a terrific 2018 event, new on the bash block is Netflix which will take over the Chiltern in Marylebone that same night.

Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to Nick Broomfield’s documentary “Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love,” which premiered last month at the Sundance Film Festival.
Broomfield’s film focuses on the love story between the late Canadian folk singer Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse, Marianne Ihlen. The announcement was made Thursday by Roadside co-founders Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff with a planned release date later this year. The deal was brokered by Kew Media Distribution.
“Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love” starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Cohen and Ihlen became part of a community of expat artists, writers, and musicians, captured in never-before-seen footage shot by Broomfield and documentarian D.A. Pennebaker. Cohen and Ihlen died in 2016.

Roadside Attractions has acquired domestic rights to Nick Broomfield’s Sundance Film Festival documentary Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love, which follows the enduring love story between legendary Canadian folk singer Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse, Marianne Ihlen. A release is planned for later this year. The documentary starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne, a single mother with a young son, became part of community of expat artists, writers and musicians. Never-before-seen footage shot by Broomfield and legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker make for a unique portrait of an idyllic 1960’s bohemia. It was on Hydra in 1968 that Broomfield, then aged 20, first himself met Marianne. She introduced him to Cohen’s music and encouraged Broomfield to make his first film. His career would spawn many iconic music legend docs about Whitney Houston, Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

On the night before the Oscars, George Clooney, Leslie Bibb, Sam Rockwell, and Jack Black were just a few of the big names at the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s Annual “Night Before” bash on the Fox Lot. Though most of the guests at Charles Finch’s annual cocktail party at the Hotel du Cap were dressed to the nines, Arnold Schwarzenegger was sporting a decidedly more casual look.
Wearing Adidas sneakers and holding an iPad in one hand and a cigar in the other, the former California governor and sometime action star made a surprise visit when he waltzed into the party right before Finch’s 9th Annual Filmmakers dinner with Jaeger LeCoultre began. A legend in her own right, Whitney Houston simply was the princess of pop, but we are all aware the trappings of fame ended her career and her life way before her time. To celebrate her life, a new documentary will be released called Whitney Can I Be Me which you can watch the first trailer for below.
The trailer for Whitney Can I Be Me is a melancholy affair as it takes us on a less than two minute journey of her life as a young, fresh faced talent all the way up until the height o her legendary fame. Accompanied by the one song that will be tied to her memory (even if it was a cover), I will always love you, people from her world of fame and celebrity and even herself, narrate the trailer with their own memories in describing her life and talent.

As the sun sets on May 19, Charles Finch will stand on the terrace of the Hotel du Cap and gaze across its iconic infinity pool. But as one of Cannes' (and Hollywood's) most prominent hosts, he can't afford to get mesmerized by the fest's twinkling lights — there are hands to shake, photos to take, conversations to lubricate.
Finch, likely clad in a classic navy suit and white shirt, will be hosting his third annual dinner at the du Cap — and debuting the third series of photos in "The Art of Behind the Scenes," a traveling exhibit...
