Over an aural backdrop of warm holiday music, the new trailer for Tribeca Film's "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas" paints a montage of family life in the world of the eponymous Fitzgeralds, as the clan bickers good-naturedly over whether their patriarch (Ed Lauter) -- who walked out 20 years earlier -- ought to be allowed to join them for Christmas. Edward Burns directs and stars as Gerry Fitzgerald, chief advocate for the estranged Big Jim Fitzgerald, and love interest to Connie Britton's Nora, a character whose precise identity the trailer leaves mysterious. "Family Christmas," which premiered at Tiff last month, represents a return for Burns to the working-class Irish milieu of "The Brothers McMullen," as well as to a pair of that film's cast members -- Britton and Mike McGione. The trailer promises complex familial tensions shot through with both humor and pathos, and, if its tone is not misleading, a healthy does of.
