It’s hard to imagine MTV holding the interest of anyone over the age of 16, but these days they don’t even come across as being in touch enough for the younger demographic. This year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) nominees have been announced, and for the most part the network seems intent on shoving the same artists down our throats that it did five years ago.
You can count the DJ/producers nominated for VMAs in 2016 on one hand: Calvin Harris, 99 Souls, Afrojack, Alesso and The Chainsmokers. Even Skrillex and SeeB’s names were left curiously absent from the nominations for Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza,” respectively, even though the latter song marks Posner’s first relevant single since 2011.
As its growth has run parallel to the proliferation of streaming services, electronic music simply isn’t a cash crop...

"Florence, Arizona"
Florence, Arizona is a cowboy town with a prison problem. Founded in 1866, this bastion of the Wild West is home to 8,500 civilians and 17,000 inmates spread over nine prisons. Through an unconventional lens, the documentary film "Florence, Arizona" weaves together the stories of four key residents of Florence, whose lives have all been shadowed in some way by the surrounding prison industrial complex. The result is an intricately crafted cinematic tapestry, threaded through with deep strands of Americana, humor, intimacy, and pathos, revealing as much about ourselves as it does about our modern carceral state. (Dir. by Andrea B. Scott, 2014, USA, 78 mins., Not Rated) Official Selection: Doc NYC
"Chuck Norris vs. Communism"
In the 1980s, under the Nicolae Ceaușescu regime, Romanians suffered from little access to foreign goods as well as an information blackout the Communist bureaucrats used to ensure ideological purity. But in clandestine screenings at neighbors’ homes of smuggled VHS tapes dubbed by a one-man distribution network, people got a glimpse of the Western world and a culture of muscular individuality with heroes like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone, and, of course, Chuck Norris.
In "Chuck Norris vs Communism," one sees the power of film to change individuals and whole societies. Through the stories of the hardworking female dubber (the most famous voice of Romania), the memories of everyday citizens, evocative re-creations of the time, and an enormous selection of clips from ’80s movies, first-time director Ilinca Calugareanu presents a film about the unexpected consequences of mass entertainment, leading to the conclusion that the greatest threat to Ceaușescu’s dictatorship might just have been the Vcr. (Dir. by Ilinca Calugareanu, 2014, UK/Romania/Germany, in Romanian with subtitles, 83 mins., Not Rated) Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, Hot Docs
"Bounce"
From Brazilian favelas to dusty Congolese villages, from Neolithic Scottish isles to modern soccer pitches, "Bounce" explores the little-known origins of our favorite sports.
The film crosses time, languages and continents to discover how the ball has staked its claim on our lives and fueled our passion to compete. Equal parts science, history and cultural essay, "Bounce" removes us from the scandals and commercialism of today’s sports world to uncover the true reasons we play ball, helping us reclaim our universal connection to the games we love. (Dir. by Jerome Thelia, 2015, USA / Brazil / Congo / India / Ireland / Italy / Mexico / UK, in English with subtitles, 71 mins., Not Rated) Official Selection: SXSW
"Double Digits: The Story of a Neighborhood Movie Star"
Deep in the recesses of YouTube there is an ingenious artist who cannot be stopped. He consistently churns out 3-4 original feature-length films a year. He’s made action movies, horror movies, westerns and more. He’s not rich, he has no crew, no formal training and aside from his action figures, plays virtually every part. Welcome to the inspiring, imaginative, and often handmade world of Ultra-diy filmmaker Richard ‘R.G.’ Miller, a 50 year-old man who creates impossible blockbusters from his tiny studio apartment in Wichita, Kansas. His dream audience? More than 9 people. (Dir. by Justin Johnson, 2015, USA, 76 mins., Not Rated)
"Right Footed"
Born without arms as the result of a severe birth defect, Jessica Cox never allowed herself to believe that she couldn’t accomplish her dreams. An expert martial artist, college graduate and motivational speaker, Jessica is also the world’s only armless airplane pilot, a mentor, and an advocate for people with disability. Directed by Emmy Award winning filmmaker Nick Spark, "Right Footed" chronicles Jessica’s amazing story of overcoming adversity and follows her over a period of two years as she becomes a mentor for children with disabilities and their families, and a disability rights advocate working in the U.S.A. and abroad. (Dir. by Nick Spark, 2015, USA, in English with subtitles, 82 mins., Not Rated)
"Hand Gestures"
"Hand Gestures" follows the process of creating one of Velasco Vitali’s famous dog sculptures, from wax to glazed bronze, at the Battaglia Artistic Foundry in Milan. The film observes the work of a group of skilled artisans in this 100-year old foundry and reveals the ancient traditions of bronze sculpture making, unchanged since the sixth century B.C. This method is not taught in school, but is passed on in the ancient oral tradition and through apprenticeships from artisans. This documentary observes and feels the work of the Battaglia Artistic Foundry: a place where the past and present share the same gestures and where each gesture is a sculpture itself.
An artist who sculpts, who works the waxes, is treated in the same way as a craftsman who turns that wax into bronze, building and destroying other ephemeral sculptures: they have been making the same gestures for centuries, and by showing this to the camera they reveal historical “jumps” in time. Director Francesco Clerici has made a fine-tuned, carefully-observed study of a glorious thing to watch: artisans practicing their craft on film. Winner of the Fipresci award at Berlinale Forum 2015. (Dir. by Francesco Clerici, 2015, Italy, in Italian with subtitles, 77 mins., Not Rated) Official Selection: Berlin International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival
"Beaver Trilogy Part IV" (USA, dir. Brad Besser)
In 1979, Kutv in Salt Lake City acquired a new video camera. Trent Harris, a producer for the station’s offbeat show Extra, ventured out into the parking lot to test the new equipment and happened upon a young man taking pictures of the station’s news helicopter.
The kid, calling himself “Groovin’ Gary,” was the self-proclaimed Rich Little of Beaver, Utah. His infectious personality and small-town impressions of John Wayne, Sylvester Stallone, and Barry Manilow piqued Harris’s interest enough so he gave him a business card and asked that he alert him if anything newsworthy happened in his hometown. What happened next would become the foundation for "Beaver Trilogy," a unique collection of films that documented Harris’s multiple attempts at re-creating the original magic of the Beaver Kid. Director Brad Besser dives deep into the mystique of this cult classic, unraveling the mystery of Harris’s original inspiration. "Beaver Trilogy Part IV" explores the line between the quest for fame and the exploitation of those who pursue it. (Dir. by Brad Besser, 2015, USA, 84 mins., Not Rated) Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, Hot Docs
The short films in competition are in two programs:
Program 1
Program 2
The awards will be presented on Sunday October 25 before the final screenings of the festival: "Mia Madre" at 7:15Pm and "Eisenstein in Guanajuato" at 7:45Pm.

When Kim Kardashian married Kanye West in Florence, Italy, on Saturday it was "all about family," a source tells People. But one family member who opted not to partake in the night's festivities was Kim's younger brother, Rob Kardashian. "Rob did come to Paris but skipped [the rehearsal dinner at] Versailles and the wedding," says the source. "He just didn't want to see a bunch of people both nights and really just is not feeling like himself." The sock designer arrived in Los Angeles Saturday night just as his sister walked down the aisle. While Kardashian was spotted working out with trainer Gunnar Peterson...

Can anyone overshadow the Kimye wedding extravaganza? Maybe Justin Bieber? The pop star's Italian fans are swarming the Forte Di Belevedere in Florence, where Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are tying the knot after lavish pre-wedding celebrations in Paris. About 250 teens - and two ambulances - have gathered outside the 16th-century fortress hoping for a peek at Bieber, who sparked rumors he'd attend the festivities when he told an Italian journalist, "In a few weeks I will be in Italy." He was in the neighborhood - sort of. Bieber was photographed looking dapper in Cannes last week and later showed up in Monaco.

While the groom, 36, wore a neutral-toned suit over a low-cut black T-shirt, his bride-to-be, 33, displayed a daring amount of flesh in a white gown that plunged to her waist and was one piece of double-sided tape away from a major wardrobe malfunction. With just a day to go till they tie the knot at Fort di Belvedere in Florence, Italy, the couple, who got engaged in October, are clearly...

Wearing a low-cut butterfly-print appliqué dress by the designer himself, the reality star, 33, and West, 36, left their apartment in Paris at 12:30 with baby North and approximately 50 guests in tow while a scrum of paparazzi, fans and well-wishers looked on. The group, including mom Kris Jenner and sisters Kendall and Khloé headed outside of town to the eight-bedroom château for a pre-celebration hosted by Valentino and Vogue's Andre Leon Talley. No bride wants rain on her wedding day. And what would be worse (or more ironic, right, Alanis Morrisette?) than the wedding we've all been waiting for being ruined by the weather? Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are in Paris preparing for their big day and guests are set to arrive. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not get the wedding invitation. The Paris weather forecast predicts a serious chance of showers for Thursday, Friday, and the rest of the weekend. And Kardashian's crew has already had make do with a not-so-desirable downpour. On Wednesday night, Kim and her family took a...

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are getting married in Italy, and the Mediterranean nation can thank its long artistic history for the honor. As Kanye explained to an Italian newspaper, the country's beautiful art helped spur the couple to a night of passion on a 2012 visit. "I think we conceived our daughter North here," the rapper told Florence's La Nazione newspaper, "among the masterpieces of the Renaissance." Behold, five of the most famous paintings of the Italian Renaissance, made even more glorious by the addition of this modern-day Renaissance family. Perhaps befitting a wedding whose details are being vigilantly guarded, a source tells People that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West will marry at the breathtaking Forte di Belvedere in Florence - an imposing fortress dating from the 16th century that originally protected the Italian city and its Renaissance palace from attackers. The fort, which reopened to the public in 2013 after five years of renovations, is known for its sweeping panoramas and the fabulous contemporary art exhibitions it hosts. Reports in the Italian media on Friday also pegged Belvedere as the wedding site. Kardashian, 33, and West, 36, are thought to be spending...

We asked and you responded like crazy!
Over the last week or so, we polled you guys about your favorite MTV Video Music Awards moments and boy did you let us know who your favorites were in categories like Most Iconic Vma Performance, Best Video of the 2000s and Best Pop Performance!
All told, we received a staggering 15 million votes in nine categories. By far the most heated contest came in the Most Iconic Vma Moment poll, where we received nearly 10 million votes … and over 9 million of those were split between two acts – Michael Jackson and Bon Jovi. That’s right! Fan groups for the two classic MTV artists got crazy competitive, but ultimately Mj prevailed, taking just over 57 percent of the vote. The late King of Pop’s 1995 Vma performance also took the crown for Best Vma Pop Performance.
There were plenty of surpises too. Panic! At The Disco...

We’re only a week away from the finale, Cat tells us, très elegante in a beige-gold kind of sheer sort of filigree dress with sleeves that bell at the cuffs (it’s beautiful and I want it and will be checking Cat’s twitter for where to get it. Last week’s apparently came from The Top Shop, which I can actually afford). The top 6 are competing for the right to be in it.

Smith And Jones feels like a mini-reboot of Doctor Who. Just like Rose did in 2005, Smith And Jones launches right into the new title sequence without a pre-credits teaser. In a sense, this is the dawning of a new era, since Rose is – for now – out of the equation. In her place comes Martha Jones, unofficially known as the Raw Deal Companion.
Martha has some big shoes to fill, since – despite the rather iffy Season Two characterisation – Rose was still riding ahead in popularity. Freema Agyeman was chosen to play Martha: at the time, a lesser known actress who'd appeared in the reboot of Crossroads and of course, as Adeola in Army Of Ghosts in what was essentially a dummy run for her full season. However, Freema got her big break with the 2007 season of Doctor Who, and since then, has become a regular face on British TV, most notably in ITV's Law And Order.

Panic! at the Disco came into the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament brimming with championship confidence, and, after making quick work of Avril Lavigne in the opening round, it appears as if that swagger was justified.
But now, as we enter the second round of Mmm, the guys in Panic! face another tough challenge, this time in the form of #13 Florence and the Machine, who handled Brandon Flowers with relative ease in their first-round matchup.
Second-round voting is now under way in the Panic/Florence matchup over on the Newsroom blog!
So while Panic! still like their chances of advancing to the Sweet 16, they're not about to overlook Florence (or her Machine). The way they see it, they're...

The first round of MTV's Musical March Madness 2011 tournament is in the books, and, unlike the actual Ncaa bracket, ours has been relatively free of upsets so far. In fact, about the closest thing we've got to a Vcu is Sum 41, who shocked the world by knocking off #1 seed Arcade Fire in the battle of Canada.
Check out our updated Mmm Bracket right here!
There were, of course, other eye-opening results: #11 Adele nipping #6 Kid Rock, #12 Patrick Stump getting by #5 Neon Trees (who couldn't muster the bluster of Gene Hackman to advance), and #9 Disturbed ripping #8 Dave Matthews Band. But overall, the first round played out about how you would expect it. And while that may have been a bummer for fans of underdogs,...
