One of Quebec’s most celebrated actors, Michel Côté, has died, his family has announced. He was 72.
Côté, who made his name in film with roles in Cruising Bar in 1989 and C.R.A.Z.Y. in 2005, had retired just over a year ago suffering from bone marrow disease.
He was last seen on screen in 2017, in De père en flic 2.
Côté broke through on film in 1983 with a lead role in André Forcier’s Au clair de la lune, and appeared in more than two dozen films and around 20 television series. He was also a theatre favourite in Quebec, where he often performed in the play Broue between screen roles.
He received a lifetime achievement Jutra award in 2013.

The 40th Montreal World Film Festival is in an apparent state of disrepair following the last minute resignations of many staff members and cancellations of dozens of screenings. A letter posted on Facebook Wednesday signed by 22 filmmakers whose films were scheduled to play at the fest before being cancelled at the 11th hour even asks festival president and founder Serge Losique to “seriously consider” resigning.

“Many of us flew great distances from different countries including Finland, Colombia, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Israel and the USA with great excitement to see our films shown on the big screen,” the letter reads. “However, when we arrived at the festival offices and found out that our screenings had been canceled without any prior notice, we felt humiliated and outraged. Most of us found out after we had already landed in Montreal.

Update: The head of the festival has branded reports of eleventh-hour staff resignations “slanderous” and “garbage” as the 40th anniversary edition got underway this week.
“It has nothing to do with the staff of the festival,” Serge Losique, who founded the Montreal World Film Festival in 1976, told Screen International on Friday. “It’s slandering [sic] and they will answer to that.”
The festival president flatly denied that any member of his staff had left, despite an open letter in Le Journal de Montreal this week in which staff said their resignations were motivated by what they claimed was financial instability at the festival.
In an emotional call to Screen in which he sounded irate and frustrated, Losique appeared to concede that there has been turnover of some volunteers and agency workers hired on short-term contracts, but added this was not the same issue.
“These people [volunteers and agency workers] know nothing about or finances,” he said. “When you have...

The “foreign” film, product of another world where people converse in odd dialects and act in peculiar ways. We need to be honest that the vast majority of films that most people consume every year are either American mainstream blockbusters or studio distributed independent (Sundance) films. There are of course, every year, a few foreign films that do get released in the American market, The selected films that get a push from their government hoping to get that Foreign Language film Oscar nom or other films that manage to make some noise at Cannes might eventually get released in our great Na. But for every Incendies or 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 days, that are released to the rabid American market there are dozens of other films that never make it outside of their home market save in the occasional film festival. The Quebec film market produces 30+ films every year, a lot...

André Forcier's Coteau Rouge will open the upcoming Festival des films du monde de Montréal on August 18. Moreover, The Cultural Post learned that the film will hit Quebec's theatres on September 9.
The film takes place on the South Shore of Montreal, which means in the suburbs.
Éric Milijours (Roy Dupuis), a wealthy real estate agent, wants to build a new condo in the neighbourhood of Coteau Rouge. However, many inhabitants of the neighbourhood are against that project.
While Céline Bonnier plays Éric's wife, the film also stars Bianca Gervais, Gaston Lepage, Pascale Montpetit, France Castel, Charlotte Laurier, Julie du Page, Donald Pilon, Sandrine Bisson, Éric Bruneau, Luc Senay, Sylvain Massé and Maxime Desjardins-Tremblay.

TORONTO -- Faced with the prospect of having to choose between warring Montreal film festivals, a group of Canadian filmmakers on Thursday came out in support of Claude Chamberlan's embattled Festival of New Cinema and New Media, now in its 33rd year. "Claude Chamberlan shouldn't be put in a position where he has to defend his wonderful festival nor should he need to fight to maintain its funding," John L'Ecuyer (Regenesis) said in an open letter. The letter of support from English-Canadian and bilingual directors, also signed by Bruce McDonald, Ryan Larkin, Peter Wintonick, John Pozer, Ron Mann, Manfred Becker and Jerry Ciccoritti, follows a March 3 open letter by French-language directors, led by Robert Lepage and Andre Forcier, urging support for Chamberlan and his event.
