I can’t accept the idea that Joe Franklin is gone. He seemed ageless, as much a part of the New York scene as the Brooklyn Bridge. If you didn’t grow up in the New York City area his name might not resonate; unless you remember Billy Crystal’s hilarious (and accurate) portrayal of Joe on Saturday Night Live in the 1980s. Crystal’s affectionate impression was based on a lifetime of watching Joe. He was a fixture on local television from 1950 to 1993, hosting a daily talk show that was strangely endearing. Originally called Joe Franklin’s Memory Lane, it featured old movie clips and records from his enormous collection, along with an array of studio guests. Having started out on...

The two leading recipes for success are
building a better mousetrap and finding a bigger loophole.
Edgar A. Shoaff
For the first few decades of broadcast television, the then three major networks held a near-monopoly on the national audience. More often than not, on any given night it was likely nine out of every ten people watching TV were watching one or another of ABC, CBS, NBC.
But even then, in that small sliver of the audience not watching the nets, there was evidence of a viewer appetite for an alternative to the often formula-dominated programming of the big broadcasters. Statistically, they didn’t amount to more than what would, years later, come to be referred to as a “niche” audience, and you’d be making a hell of an assumption saying they were looking elsewhere for their TV entertainment because they wanted something better. But it was...

Remember 1984’s “GhostSmashers” aka “GhostStoppers”? Of course you do. With a star-studded cast featuring John Belushi (Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Jeff Goldblum (Egon Spengler), Eddie Murphy (Winston Zeddemore), John Candy (Louis), Sandra Bernhard (Janine) and Paul Reubens (Ivo Shandar/Gozer), the future-set supernatural comedy in which roving teams of ghost catchers protect humanity from the supernatural, directed by Ivan Reitman, cost a whopping $300 million to make, featured hundreds of monsters, including a giant marshmallow man, and spawned not one but two sequels; the second of which got smoothly underway recently with the full, gracious participation of all of the original cast.
Ok, all of that happened in a parallel universe, where casting decisions went the other way, Dan Aykroyd’s original script got the green light, where perhaps dogs and cats live together in mass hysteria...but we got “Ghostbusters” instead. We wouldn't trade.

Vimeo has consistently been the video sharing site of choice for filmmakers, with their high-quality uploads and file-size permissions that have allowed filmmakers to upload complete, longer-length films without the irritating time-limit restrictions of YouTube.
Now, as of last week, Vimeo has upgraded their Vimeo Plus user accounts to allow filmmakers to upload full 5Gb videos in one shot. That means that Plus users can now upload a full 2.5 hour long feature film in quality HD to the site. As of this writing, this file-size increase is in Beta mode, meaning that not all the kinks may have been worked out yet. A Vimeo Plus membership costs either $9.95 per month or $59.95 per year.
Prior to this change, several filmmakers have already taken advantage of Vimeo’s higher upload limits without time restraints to put their longer films online. On Bad Lit, we tend to consider films over 47 minutes or so...

The polka revolution is dead! And the one who put the stake in its cold, dead heart is this man: Jan Lewan, who is the subject of the wickedly fun documentary The Man Who Would Be Polka King, embedded above. Ironically, Lewan was the one who could have turned polka into a post-Lawrence Welk international sensation. That is, until greed convinced him to milk his fans for thousands of dollars in a cruel Ponzi scheme. Think Bernie Madoff backed by accordion music.
The story that filmmakers John Mikulak and Joshua Von Brown have told is all true, especially the bizarre little details that are too insane to make up. An unmistakeably charismatic man, Lewan was able to convince dozens of his fans that a goofy little gift shop selling cheap Polish trinkets was some kind of multi-million dollar empire. And he did it through such schemes as organizing trips...

Billie Jean King has broken down barriers for 40 years. Her long-ago victory over Bobby Riggs in that famous Battle of the Sexes tennis match was The Moment in American gender relations. Now she's written LifeTime Media's "Pressure Is a Privilege: Lessons I've Learned From Life and the Battle of the Sexes." The foreword's by Holly Hunter who, in 2001, played Billie Jean in the TV movie "When Billie Beat Bobby."
