Native Angeleno April Shih is not only a TV writer for “Dave” and WGA Award winner for “Mrs. America” — she is now on location with Season 5 of “Fargo” — but she’s an avid poker player.
You can tell that by the way she is willing to take on risk. After tiring of making shorts, she put in two years earning no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em poker money in Las Vegas. Her poker pilot script launched her lucrative writing career, thanks in part to Jen Goyne Blake, who selected that script at the 2017 Sundance Episodic Lab, which Blake ran for six years.
The two women are inspired by a new way of producing projects that combines the Duplass’ brothers’ DIY aesthetic and the mentoring wisdom of Sundance workshops. As Shih was closing an overall deal for Diversity Hire at FX and Hulu, she brought in Blake and expanded the company’s footprint to include producing,...

Hollywood's disappointing summer extended into the first full weekend in September. With uninspiring new releases like "The Words" and "The Cold Light Of Day" in theaters alongside a slew of mediocre holdovers, box office revenues were at post-9/11 lows. Friday-to-Sunday ticket sales were estimated between $65 million and $67 million according to THR, marking the worst combined weekend total since Sept. 21-23, 2001 when films earned just $59.7 million
"The Possession" was the number one choice for the second week in a row, grossing $9.5 million. It's the first film to lead the box office with less than $10 million since "Bangkok Dangerous" was the top earner during this weekend in 2008. "Lawless" earned the number two position with $6 million, while "The Words" opened in third place with $5 million. Not that the film was expected to be a blockbuster, despite famous faces like Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana: The CBS Films release was produced for $6 million.

"Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," which CBS Films hooked at last year's Toronto Film Festival, opened to a strong $240,000 on 18 screens this weekend. That's an impressive $13,333 per-location average in a good weekend for specialty films. CBS Films had expected a $10,000 per-screen average. "This is a film that not only could attract an arthouse audience and a commercial upscale audience," but a broader audience, Steven Friedlander, CBS Films' head of distribution, told TheWrap Sunday afternoon. "It is a film that critics and audiences say, 'This was enjoyable.'" Also read: 'Salmon Fishing...

Los Angeles — Some unknown kids with superpowers have nudged out the actor who plays the world's most famous teen wizard at the weekend box office.
The 20th Century Fox release "Chronicle," featuring a relatively unknown cast as youths who gain telekinetic abilities, debuted as the No. 1 movie with $22 million.
Sunday studio estimates put "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe's ghost story "The Woman in Black," released by CBS Films, just behind with a $21 million opening.
The results were close enough that the No. 1 and 2 rankings could switch when final numbers are released Monday.
The two movies had healthy starts considering it was Super Bowl weekend, when few people go to theaters on Sunday because of the big game.
Each movie landed in the all-time top-10 list for Super Bowl weekend debuts, which is headed by the $31.1 million opening for 2008's "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert,...

CBS Films has decided to delay the release of "Beastly," the "Beauty and the Beast" re-boot starring "High School Musical's" Vanessa Hudgens and Mary-Kate Olsen. The film was originally slated for release on July 30, 2010, and will now open in theaters on March 18, 2011.
Hudgens' boyfriend, Zac Efron, is the reason for the move, though we're sure he didn't mean it! His film "Charlie St. Cloud," about a young man who sees his dead younger brother, is slated for a July 30 release this summer. CBS Films felt that slating the two movies against one another would be counterproductive.
"There wasn't much left in the summer that we could move it to, we didn't want to go in fall, and the holidays are for four-quadrant movies," CBS Films' Head of Distribution Steven Friedlander tells The Hollywood Reporter. "So we figured if we went to March, we'd have some school breaks happening around that time.

Fledgling indie CBS Films, which has released just two films to lackluster results, will unspool only one more pic this year after delaying the release of romantic fantasy "Beastly" until March 18.
The postponement was prompted by Universal placing the similarly themed Zac Efron starrer "Charlie St. Cloud" on July 30, the original date for "Beastly."
"Beastly" stars Vanessa Hudgens, Efron's girlfriend and fellow alum of the "High School Musical" feature series.
"Beastly" involves an egotistical young man (played by Alex Pettyfer) who is cast under a dark spell and has a year to find a young woman to love. "St. Cloud" revolves around a young man torn between a lasting bond with his dead brother and feelings for the girl he loves.
CBS Films distribution topper Steven Friedlander said he had little choice but to delay "Beastly" by almost eight months.

Cue the fire-breathing motion picture.
DreamWorks Animation's 3D adventure "How to Train Your Dragon" has yet to flame out in movie theaters, offering an upbeat storyline to an otherwise ho-hum boxoffice session. The Paramount-distributed pic topped domestic rankings with an estimated $15 million in its fifth weekend for $178 million in cumulative coin.
Two wide-openers offered slight competition, as CBS Films' Jennifer Lopez starrer "The Back-Up Plan" proved a mere runner-up, and Warner Bros.' action pic "The Losers" lost by more than expected. "Plan" -- about a couple who meet after the woman's artificial insemination -- procreated $12.3 million in second place; "Losers," based on a comics series about a fictional World War II fighting force, fired blanks with $9.6 million in fourth.
Disneynature's "Oceans" hauled in $6 million from a modestly wide launch in 1,206 locations. That was good for eighth place on the frame, with the documentary toting an $8.5 million cume...

J.Lo picked a good weekend to get back on the big screen. Whether the actress-singer picked the right film remains to be seen.
CBS Films' Jennifer Lopez starrer "The Back-Up Plan" looks like the strongest wide release hitting multiplexes Friday, with Warner Bros.' action pic "The Losers" tracking a tad behind. But neither is likely to top the weekend boxoffice.
Lopez most recently appeared in the 2006 music drama "El Cantante" before taking a few years off for child-rearing. The PG-13 "Plan" was directed by TV helmer Alan Poul ("Big Love") and co-stars Alex O'Loughlin ("White Out") in a romantic comedy about a couple's pregnancy-entangled relationship.
"It's definitely a chick flick," CBS Films distribution topper Steven Friedlander said. "But in terms of its opening, the tracking over the past few weeks has shown to be less of a science than it once might have been. In any event,...

Monday is the day "Avatar" flies past "Titanic" in its historic global journey.
James Cameron's latest big-screen epic exits the weekend with an estimated $1.841 billion in worldwide boxoffice, just a shade behind the record $1.843 billion rung up by the filmmaker's "Titanic" in 1997-98. So there is little doubt that Monday's domestic and overseas boxoffice will combine to write the worldwide tally for "Avatar" into industry annals.
"Audiences still are going in record numbers around the world to experience this remarkable film," Fox senior vp domestic distribution Chris Aronson said.
As for its theatrical performance in the latest session, "Avatar" became the first film since "Titanic" to top domestic rankings for six straight weekends, ringing up $36 million to push cumulative boxoffice to $552.8 million. "Titanic" took in a total $600.8 million domestically.
Internationally, "Avatar" cume reached $1.29 billion in the latest frame, surpassing the $1.24 billion foreign tally for "Titanic."
