The Sheffield DocFest will open its 2024 edition with the world premiere of Kevin Macdonald’s Klitschko: More Than a Fight on June 12 at Sheffield City Hall. The annual documentary festival in England also unveiled Roger Ross Williams, the first African American director to win an Academy Award for his 2010 doc short Music by Prudence, as the guest of honor.
The Sky original Klitschko: More Than a Fight promises to offer audiences “unprecedented access to former heavyweight boxing world champion Vitali Klitschko and his brother Wladimir, who together
dominated the sport for more than a decade,” according to a description of the doc. “Now the longest-serving mayor of Kyiv, this feature-length documentary charts Vitali’s journey from the ring to political office, leading the defense of the capital when it was attacked by Russian forces in February 2022 to the present day. Sex and the City fans have a chance to own a piece of the show’s fashion history yet again. In the last few years, several important fashion pieces from the famed HBO franchise have hit the auction block, and now the beloved Dior Newsprint dress that Carrie wore in Sex and the City 2 is up for sale on an e-commerce website. The price for the dress is pretty steep, though.
Carrie Bradshaw’s Dior dress is up for sale
Carrie Bradshaw had a lot of iconic looks during Sex and the City’s six-season run. The dress is now up for sale on 1st Dibs. It has been listed for a staggering $245,000.

Two of spring’s starriest releases arrive on digital platforms this week. Neither was a commercial sensation, but each attracted enough buzz to signal long shelf lives ahead. Watch one when you get home from seeing “Challengers.”
The contender to watch this week: “Love Lies Bleeding“
For her sophomore feature, Rose Glass, one of the coolest directors working today, made an erotic lesbian crime thriller starring Kristen Stewart as an ’80s gym manager who falls hard for a bodybuilder (Katy O’Brian), not realizing her new lady has ties to her estranged gangster father (a long-haired Ed Harris). It’s an electric movie oozing with noirish grime, but it wasn’t quite the runaway hit A24 was probably hoping for, collecting a modest $8.7 million at the worldwide box office despite Stewart’s star power. Still, “Love Lies Bleeding” seems destined for cult-favorite status, and Glass has gained a lifetime’s worth of clout.

Kevin Macdonald's High & Low – John Galliano is now showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries.High & Low – John Galliano. What are the limits of forgiveness? Is making a documentary about a disgraced public figure, in which that remorseful person is allowed to try to explain their actions, inherently an act of damage-control propaganda? Or can it be a way of letting them tighten their own noose? Since its premiere at Telluride last September, Kevin Macdonald’s High & Low – John Galliano (2023) has fueled such heated conversations. Leaving many of its inquiries open-ended, this documentary is about neither complete condemnation nor exoneration. Instead, Macdonald tries to make sense of the enigma at his film’s center: a man who does not deny committing a hate crime over a decade ago, but who still claims to have no memory of the events or how he got there.Widely admired for his audacious style and designs,...

Kevin Macdonald’s finely balanced portrait of the disgraced Dior designer, on Mubi from Friday, is the newest arrival on a catwalk of fashion industry movies, from Funny Face to Zoolander
For those who bleat on about the iniquities of supposed “cancel culture”, the career of British fashion designer John Galliano is a useful counterpoint. Sacked in 2011 as the creative director of Christian Dior after an appalling incident of antisemitic abuse on his part, he spent two years in the wilderness before being hired by Oscar de la Renta and subsequently Maison Margiela, where he has been for a decade. A-listers still wear his gowns on red carpets. Life goes on. Kevin Macdonald’s documentary High & Low: John Galliano (streaming on Mubi from 26 April) chronicles Galliano’s rise and fall and rise with a more distanced, critical eye than you may expect from a film co-produced by Vogue publisher Condé Nast.

Dakota Fanning is starting her week by making the rounds on the media circuit in elegant white spring outfits, anticipating the April 4 spring premiere of her Netflix psychological thriller series, Ripley.
With the eight-episode limited series coming to Netflix in black-and-white, I think Dakota Fanning’s all-white selections for the press tour make perfect sense.
Dakota Fanning in a Classy White Simkhai Shirt Dress
I love the white shirt dress Fanning wore to her Tuesday appearance on Good Morning America. It’s elegant but not dull, perfectly encapsulating her signature edgy and classy style.
The I Am Sam star chose the $645 “Samba” dress by Simkhai, a Los Angeles-based fashion label known for providing modern women with exquisite ready-to-wear creations that combine feminine sensuality and masculine edge.
I particularly like how Fanning’s dress creates the illusion of a shirt tucked into a midi skirt.

John Galliano: remember him? If you have any serious interest in fashion, his is a name you’ll never forget, but for the average person it’s rather different. When I mentioned him to my partner I got the response “Is he that horrible alcoholic designer who said all those awful things about Jewish people?”
I’ve asked around further since and that is, indeed, how a lot of people remember him. When we first see him in Kevin Macdonald’s documentary, which screened as part of the 2024 Glasgow Film Festival, he’s an odd-looking figure lurking in the shadows as glamorous models prepare for a show. The film then cuts straight to the scene which non-fashion fans will best know him for, the one that went viral on YouTube. There he is, sitting in a café with a pinched, mean expression on his face, obviously out of his skull,...

High & Low: John Galliano review – Kevin Macdonald’s candid look at the fashion designer’s implosion
The film-maker’s frank, even-handed documentary assesses the fallout from the former Dior creative director’s antisemitic tirade and his standing today
There’s an argument to be made that we have heard everything we ever need to hear from John Galliano, the subject of this knotty, complex documentary portrait. That after the formerly celebrated and adored British fashion designer was filmed, booze-sodden, bitter and spewing an antisemitic tirade at strangers from his preferred corner seat in La Perle, his local bar in Paris, his legacy should have been buried and the attention of the fashion world should have moved on to other, less radioactively compromised figures. But, as the Washington Post journalist Robin Givhan drily observes: “Fashion has a very short memory”, particularly, she adds, when it comes to well-connected white men with powerful friends.
Having been ignominiously sacked from his role as creative director at Dior in 2011, Galliano went to ground,...

It’s hard knowing what to make of Kevin Macdonald’s High & Low: John Galliano. It concerns the controversial fashion designer, his unexpected rise (“the son of a plumber” from Gibraltar), his stratospheric success, his catastrophic fall. For those who may not know: Galliano became the creative director of Christian Dior Se in the mid-90s (Givenchy before that) and developed a style that was both celebrated and imitated by the industry at large. The man himself was regarded as a genius in his own time, and he worked himself (and his right-hand man Steven Robinson) to the bone. His runways were an event unto themselves. The word “revolutionary” was apparently used. Then, in 2011, Galliano’s career came to a screeching halt when he was caught on video at a Paris bar badgering fellow patrons with racist and antisemitic hate speech. He was swiftly fired from his position and arrested for the remarks.

“He's a fascinating character,” says filmmaker Kevin Macdonald of the fashion designer John Galliano. “There's so many of mysteries around him as a character, I suppose. And you don't want to go into making a documentary knowing how you're going to end up at the end. You want to go on a journey and obviously take the audience on a journey, changing their minds and deepening their perception of somebody.”
Although he’s had a lower profile in recent years, most people will know something of the designer’s work, at least when they see it. They’ll probably also recall him as a controversial figure, an obnoxious drunk whose downfall came when he was caught on camera making antisemitic remarks. John has now been sober for several years and refers to those remarks as “disgusting,” but should he be forgiven?...

A-listers talk about the flamboyant designer but the film doesn’t press the man himself enough on his most jarring incidents
The strange, and strangely unedifying, story of fashion designer John Galliano is retold by film-maker Kevin Macdonald, who covers the ground and states the facts in an impeccably professional way. Yet this film feels constrained by the obvious need to be diplomatic with Galliano and his A-list supporters to whom Macdonald has intimate access.
Galliano is the brilliant Gibraltarian-British designer whose flamboyant designs electrified the world of couture in the 90s; he was creative director of both Givenchy and Dior in Paris. The acclaim was dazzling but he became seriously overworked, had issues with alcohol and drug use, was under emotional strain following the death of his assistant and friend Steven Robinson, and badly shaken by Alexander McQueen taking his own life. And then, in 2011, video emerged of him,...

Kevin Macdonald’s High & Low: John Galliano is another hagiography in an increasingly long list of public relations exercises masquerading as substantial fashion profiles. Except this documentary is a more perverse exercise in self-celebration than its predecessors, as it shamelessly announces from the very start that it’s an attempt at atonement for disgraced designer John Galliano, who was widely condemned in 2011 for racist and antisemitic rants.
High & Low opens with the case that triggered Galliano’s public downfall, all but promising that it will confront his demons head on and leave no stone unturned. Instead, it enlists Galliano’s high-profile friends and former colleagues—among them Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Penélope Cruz, Charlize Theron, and, of course, Anna Wintour—to make the case that it wasn’t really “John” talking at the Paris café La Perle when he used expressions such as “fucking ugly Jewish bitch...

Exclusive: Jude Law’s Riff Raff Entertainment has received “significant funding” via a new TV development deal with France’s Newen Connect.
Unveiled at Newen’s London TV Screenings event, the deal sees Riff Raff, which the two-time Oscar nominee co-founded with Ben Jackson, handed a cash injection to develop a slate of TV projects, while giving the company a distribution pipeline.
The development partnership has already spawned three early-stage projects: political thriller Foreign Desk starring Law and written by Marek Horn, a female-led show from Pure writer Kirstie Swain and a “talent-led TV project with acclaimed playwright Chris Urch.”
The investment figure was not disclosed but is referred to as “significant.” It is being underwritten by European studio-financier Anton, which separately invested €50M ($54M) in Newen in early 2022 that allowed the French major to move into features.

Metallics ruled the red carpet at the 2024 Grammys, almost from the very first moment.
Dua Lipa — a double nominee for “Dance the Night” from Barbie The Album — turned up early on the 2024 Grammys red carpet because she was the broadcast’s opening act and immediately set the night’s style tone in a silver-fringed gown by creative director Nicolas di Felice for Courrèges, paired with impressive jewels by Tiffany & Co.
That focus on metals continued in elegant and artful ways. The Grammys have always been the odd duck, fashion-wise, of the awards season, and that’s meant only as a compliment. On music’s biggest night, attendees embrace the essence of artistry and creativity and that extends to their sartorial choices. While other awards shows largely exude elegance and occasionally a splash of grandeur, the Grammys are about exhibiting a musician’s mettle.

Continuing the naked dress look favored by red-carpet stars in the last year, Miley Cyrus made a major impression on the red carpet for the 2024 Grammys.
The “Flowers” and “Used to Be Young” singer, nominated for six 2024 Grammy Awards, arrived for the show at downtown Los Angeles’ Crypto.com arena wearing a see-through, net-like dress made of 14,000 gold safety pins. Arranged geometrically, the pins created a sort of cone bra effect of two circles up top as well as a thong-like shape below. The look is a custom creation by designer John Galliano for Maison Margiela, the once-cancelled, now-resurgent fashion genius who is the subject of an upcoming documentary, High & Low, debuting in March. His recent Maison Margiela couture show has been a subject of fascination ever since it was presented on Jan. 25, from its decadent Parisian looks to the porcelain-doll makeup created by Pat McGrath.

John Galliano, 63, the creative director of Maison Martin Margiela, had the tough task of closing the Paris haute couture season (which has seen stunning shows from such houses as Valentino and Schiaparelli), a challenge he met with an extremely fascinating show. It was an extraordinary portrayal of Paris’ famous historical figures that seemed to have stepped out of an Émile Zola novel.
Galliano presented Margiela’s new Spring Summer 2024 artisanal collection inside an abandoned, vaulted-ceiling venue along the Seine, transformed into a decadent bistro where a range of French archetypes took center stage, from the shapely and brazen courtesans of the past — such as Madame Pompadour or Jeanne du Barry — to the sensual and devilish Moulin Rouge dancers, as well as nocturnal gamblers and cat burglars.

Every Sex and the City fan will instantly recognize two high-wattage looks up for sale in the latest event presented by Julien’s Auctions — one piece worn onscreen by series star and executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker — as they’ve transcended the function of costumes or fashion to become part of the show’s enduring iconography.
“Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion” is indeed an apt title for an upcoming auction that includes the three-tiered belted tutu skirt worn by Parker in Satc‘s opening credits (and again in the 2008 movie). The skirt was famously purchased by the show’s costume designer, Patricia Field, who discovered the piece in a $5 bargain bin and fashioned it into one of the most-recognized looks in the series.

We’ve all heard about Princess Diana‘s revenge dress and the message she was trying to send to her soon-to-ex-husband and his then-mistress when she wore it in 1994. But according to a royal author who was friends with the late princess, there was another dress Diana was seen in years earlier that she rocked to make Charles’ lover (formerly known as Camilla Parker Bowles) go “insane.”
How Princess Diana taunted Camilla with a simple blue dress
Former diarist and magazine editor Tina Brown was friends with the late royal and even met with Diana a few weeks before her death in 1997. Brown, who wrote The Diana Chronicles and also authored the book The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor — The Truth and the Turmoil, revealed the princess’s intention with a simple blue polyester dress.

The kind of self-flaggellation the Left does is something you never see from the Right.
The Left’s fears about being in a bubble, about not doing enough to understand the other side, about their own overreach, are a phenomenon unique to liberals. There does not need to be a New York Times Pitchbot for the Right. Ben Shapiro is not issuing a blistering movie review takedown of a Dinesh D’Souza documentary that went too far and didn’t listen enough to the other side.
And now there’s “Coup!” Politically muddled at best, something Ron DeSantis would happily introduce at Cpac at worst, this populist satire from directors Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman is an Adam McKay-lite class-war confection looking to have it both ways. Its “eat the rich” message is certainly strong enough for those with an extremely niche grievance: Those who, three years later, want to...

One viewing of “High & Low – John Galliano, “a documentary chronicling the impressive rise of British fashion designer John Galliano and his equally jarring fall from grace, should be more than sufficient to convince even the most uneducated of the influence he’s held throughout the industry; bolstered by a plentiful amount of talking head interviews from celebrity associates Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz and an abundance of footage showcasing model after model walking the runway in the apparel he brought to life, it’s clear how the man commanded a wealth of respect and love from those who adorned his garments and knew him as both a designer of inspired attire and a dear friend to those who considered themselves as such.

Kevin Macdonald’s moving 2018 bio-doc, Whitney, did a great job of fortifying Whitney Houston’s legacy while wiping away the smear of the predatory celebrity culture that made a mockery of one of contemporary pop’s most exceptional talents during the worst and most public period of her drug addiction. Another price-of-fame subject, disgraced British fashion designer John Galliano, is a trickier prospect that does the director no favors.
If you come to this film looking for a brisk overview of his achievements in couture, you might find High & Low more than serviceable. Footage of shows, especially from Galliano’s big-budget tenure as creative director at Dior make for fabulous wardrobe porn, highlighting the haute theatricality and ravishing romance that turned him into a fashion rock star. But if you’re expecting the definitive closing leg of the redemption tour, it’s unlikely you’ll find this a persuasive argument...

John Galliano loomed large over the world of fashion throughout the 1990s and early aughts. As the creative director of Givenchy and Dior, Galliano was widely admired for his bold, barrier-pushing style and his sensual, elegant designs. But Galliano’s career imploded after videos emerged of him in 2010 and 2011 speaking admiringly of Adolf Hitler and launching into an antisemitic and racist diatribe, shocking the patrons of a Parisian cafe. It was, in retrospect, an early example of “cancel culture,” one that makes Galliano’s rise and fall instructive in light of the similar public reckonings that many Hollywood figures have faced in recent years.

Google “forgiving John Galliano.” I’ll wait.
That’s quite a list of headlines, huh? “How Fashion Forgave John Galliano.” “Why Won’t People Forgive John Galliano?” “Should John Galliano Be Forgiven?” “Can We Forgive John Galliano Already?” Those are just within the first five results.
With hindsight, the-then Dior creative director was the first to really feel the brunt of today’s so-called “cancel culture” — and with good reason. His comments from December 2010 at Parisian Cafe La Perle, captured via smartphone in a way that vulgar remarks could not have been beforehand and released only a couple months later after yet another altercation, were truly vile. He spoke about his love of Hitler, his hatred of Jews, and his seeming approval of the Holocaust.

We’re ecstatic to share a program we feel reflects so much of the past fifty years, naturally and organically, films old and new, which stand as a testament to our beloved co-founders Tom Luddy and Bill Pence who are no longer with us.”

Films about Grammy Award winner Jon Batiste, Andy Kaufman and designer John Galliano are part of this year’s Telluride Film Festival documentary feature lineup.
In all, 22 feature and four short documentaries are heading to the 50th edition of Tff, where buzz for docs seeking Oscar consideration frequently takes hold.
The lineup, kept under wraps until the eve of the fest’s opening on Aug. 31, includes docs from novice and veteran documentarians, including Errol Morris (“The Pigeon Tunnel”), Madeleine Gavin (“Beyond Utopia”), Matthew Heineman (“American Symphony”) and Paul B. Preciado.
After premiering “Orlando, My Political Biography” in Berlinale last February, Preciado garnered four awards, including the Teddy award for best documentary. Sideshow and Janus Films acquired North American rights to the doc in March.
In the docu, the first-time director, who is a trans writer and activist, uses Virginia Woolf’s 1928 book “Orlando,” the first novel in which the main...

The 50th edition of the Telluride Film Festival will include the world premieres of Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin,” Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s “Nyad,” and Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” among other top awards hopefuls, festival organizers announced on Wednesday.
In keeping with tradition, the 2023 Telluride lineup was kept under wraps until 24 hours before the annual festival begins – although sharp-eyed pundits and awards experts were able to accurately speculate about many of the titles in this year’s lineup due to premiere designations at other festivals in Toronto, Venice, and New York.
“Saltburn” is Fennell’s second film after 2020’s “Promising Young Woman,” which landed the budding auteur a trio of Oscar nominations. The film stars recent Best Supporting Actor nominee Barry Keoghan, as well as Jacob Elordi of “Euphoria” fame, former Oscar nominees Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant,...

Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s “Nyad,” Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” and George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin” are among the films that will screen at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, Telluride organizers announced on Wednesday.
The festival begins on Thursday, only one day after the announcement of the lineup. The late notice is a tradition at Telluride, which sells out its passes every year without revealing what films will be playing in the Colorado mountain town — although as the Toronto International Film Festival has gotten more detailed in announcing the premiere status of its bookings, it’s been increasingly easy to read between the lines of Toronto releases to figure out what’s headed to Telluride.
(This year, for example, Payne’s “The Holdovers,” which reunites the director with his “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti, was listed as an international premiere by TIFF, which meant that...

An edgy new voice within the world of French genre, Adrien Beau worked as a designer and scenographer for the likes of Dior, John Galliano and Agnes B before making his feature debut with the offbeat vampire movie “Vourdalak.”
Produced by Judith-Lou Levy at Les Films du Bal, “Vourdalak” will world premiere at Venice Critics’ Week and will likely be one of its boldest entries. At a time when horror has become a mainstream genre overloaded with special effects, “Vourdalak” couldn’t be more radical. Lensed in Super 16, the film’s central character is a vampire patriarch named Gorcha, played by a marionette that Beau operates and lends his voice to.
In an interview with Variety ahead of the festival, Beau says he got the idea for the film after he and Levy came across “La Famille du Vourdalak,” a strange vampire novella penned by Alexeï Konstantinovitch Tolstoï, published in...
