In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Academy Awards red carpet underwent a sea change. During the nascent era of the celebrity stylist, fearless stars not only began donning high-end designer labels (like awards show pioneer Armani) but also flouted traditional Oscar dress-code decorum in new ways, sometimes inviting the wrath of prevailing critics.
Among the looks that shook things up — and made an indelible impression on fashion and pop culture — were Sharon Stone’s proto-high-low dressing, Jada Pinkett Smith’s sensational two-piece set, actresses in one-of-a-kind vintage looks and a still controversial aughties affectation (the whale tail).
Nearly three decades later, the influence of the era’s Oscar red carpet can be seen all over the TikTok generation, Fall 2023 runways and, yes, once again on recent awards-season red carpets.

Tim here. I watched the Oscars this year completely without the aid of social media of any sort – absolutely worth doing, if you haven't recently. It lets you enjoy the ceremony for the ceremony.
What that means is that I didn't realize for two whole days that there was quite a furor over my very favorite visual from the whole night, Jenny Beavan's outstanding outfit that she wore on the way to collect her Best Costume Design award for Mad Max: Fury Road. It turns out that there were quite a few people who did not share my view that it was the night's clear highlight. Several of them were sitting right inside the Kodak Theater with her, in fact, rather visibly failing to be delighted by her attire. That's especially true of an epically grumpy Alejandro González Iñárritu. He and several other conspicuous non-clappers were the subject of...

Pom-pom making prisoners, melting costumes and a cross-dressing Tony Curtis: the behind-the-scenes tales from the watershed movie on its 21st birthday
• Rewatching The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert
In 1993, a low-budget feature film crew drove from Sydney to Alice Springs with a truck full of sensational costumes and a pink and lavender bus now considered a fixture of Australian cinema. The film they returned with would become a worldwide smash-hit and a watershed production for the Lgbt movement.
Writer-director Stephan Elliott’s inimitable The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a story about (as one character famously puts it) “a cock in a frock on a rock”. The film led to Academy award recognition for costume designers Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, who won Oscars in 1995 after budget restrictions turned them into the wardrobe world’s equivalent of MacGyver-like problem solvers. For example, Hugo Weaving...

...for uploading this video of the 1994 costume Academy Award presentation when I asked them to. Here's how it began...
I had found myself in one of those YouTube wormholes of watching Oscar clips at 3am. I am sure we've all been there. I've watched them all so many times that I honestly don't know why I keep going back - especially since rights issues force The Academy's YouTube channel to delete the acting nominee clips (boo! hiss!) Alas, like a masochist I just keep going back. Don't we all?
Nevertheless, I am always frustrated at the selection of videos that The Academy choose to upload. I always want to watch costume designers, art directors, special effects artists, and so on. I like hearing the applause for left-of-centre selections. I think it's fun to see how the writers and presenters represented these categories and people. So, in a joking fashion I tweeted The Academy stating that,...

"Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical" is headed to Sin City for an 11-week engagement at The Venetian, beginning June 18. Wade McCollum, Scott Willis and Bryan West star along with Bob Hart in the touring production of the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit.
The musical, based on the 1994, drag queen comedy film, "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" follows the guys as they travel through the Australian Outback searching for love and friendship. The bonus is they find more than they dreamed they would along the way. "Priscilla" features more than 20 pop hits and dance floor favorites, like "Material Girl," "I Will Survive," "It's Raining Men," and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."
Oscar winners Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel received Tony Awards for costume design when the show hit Broadway. But Gardiner told Zap2it the 500-plus over-the-top costumes could have been even more outrageous. "In all my experience,...

Hollywoodnews.com: In a fairly predictable affair, the immensely popular “Book of Mormon” grabbed nine Tony Awards – including Best Musical – during Sunday’s telecast, broadcast live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
“We really want to thank the audiences because you guys made the show what it is and I think you’re going to have to atone for it one day,” co-creator Trey Parker said. Parker and his creative partner Matt Stone, of course, are the driving force behind “South Park.”
Best Play, meanwhile, went to Nick Stafford’s “War Horse,” which soon will be a feature film from director Steven Spielberg.
The ceremony was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, who made several jokes at the expense of the troubled “Spider-Man” musical and brought the house down with a duet with Hugh Jackman.

Here’s the easiest prediction we can make about this year’s Tony Awards, which will be presented June 12 at NYC’s Beacon Theatre: Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark will be a recurring punchline for returning host Neil Patrick Harris. The CBS broadcast will also manage to include a number from this still-to-officially-open show, featuring composers Bono and the Edge as well as on-stage Spidey Reeve Carney. Predicting the actual awards isn’t nearly as easy. But in a lot of the major categories, there seem to be some very strong front-runners. Expect The Book of Mormon (pictured left, top...

New York, New York (X17online) - This year's Tony Award nominations are out, and Daniel Radcliffe, Robin Williams, James Earl Jones and Ben Stiller are absent from them. Musical The Book of Mormon swept the nominations with 14. Actors including Al Pacino, Vannessa Redgrave, Edie Falco and Frances McDormand all scored nominations, while Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Stiller and Robin Williams did not. Radcliffe won rave reviews for his performance in the revival of the Tony-winning play How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The production itself was nominated eight times this year. The Book of Mormon, written by the creators of South Park, won at the box office despite its lack of big-name actors in the cast. Williams, had he won a Tony, would have been the eleventh actor ever to win a Grammy, Tony, Emmy and Oscar. Alas, he was not nominated. Stiller was starring in The House of Blue Leaves.

Strap on your platform heels, fling the boa around your neck and wiggle into tight sequins. If you can't go fabulous, fine, just go. Join the party at Broadway's Palace Theatre.
If disco-dancing drag queen divas can't make you happy, well, really what can?
It is impossible to leave "Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical" anything less than elated.
First, let's make one thing clear: As much fun as this is -- and Priscilla is so much fun it's a wonder it's not illegal -- this isn't for kids.
Everyone else: go! Don't bother with the homophobic nonsense. If more people bopped along to Miss Understanding singing "What's Love Got to Do With It?" inane hatreds ought to melt away.

The new musical just wrapped a well-received run in Toronto and began previews Feb. 28 with opening night set for March 30 at the Palace Theater. The 1994 film version won an Oscar for its elaborate costumes designed on a shoe-string budget by Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel. The pair, who had a bigger budget this time round, took home the Olivier Award for last year's London production. Olivier Award nominee Tony Sheldon reprises the Terence Stamp role of the aging drag queen while Tony Award nominee Will Swenson ("Hair") has the Hugh Weaving part and Nick Adams steps into Guy Pearce's pumps. The musical is written by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott with Simon Phillips directing and Ross Coleman doing the dances Among the producers of the new musical is Bette Midler. Were it to win the...
