The trio of composers behind Disney-Pixar’s “Soul” won the Oscar for best original score Sunday night. It was the first Academy Award for jazz artist Jon Batiste and the second for Nine Inch Nail rock writers-turned-film composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Finch.
Batiste becomes only the second Black composer to clinch the original score award in the 86-year history of the category.
“God gave us 12 notes,” Batiste said at the podium. “It’s the same 12 notes Duke Ellington had, Bach had, Nina Simone…. Every gift is special. Every contribution with music that comes from the divine, into the instruments, into the film, into the minds and hearts and souls of every person who hears it. The stories that happen when you listen to it, the stories you share, the moments you create, the memories you make, man, it’s just so incredibly special.”

The directors of Soul, the first Pixar film to feature an African-American protagonist, paid tribute to music and art teachers and jazz musicians after their Oscars win.
Pete Docter and Dana Murray won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature – continuing Pixar’s dominance in this category with 11 wins in the last 20 years.
“This film started as a love letter to jazz but we had no idea how much jazz would teach us about life. We don’t get to control what happens but we can, like a jazz musician turn whatever happens into something of value and beauty,” Docter said. “Our main character, Joe, is a music teacher and we want to thank music teachers and art teachers everywhere – you make the world a better place. My wish for all of us tonight is that we can follow the example of jazz musicians, wherever we are, whatever we have, we turn it into something beautiful.

A new short from Pixar Animation Studios will revisit the skeptical new soul 22 long before she ever met Joe Gardner. Debuting on Disney+ on April 30, the animated 22 vs. Earth returns Tina Fey back to “The Great Before” as the voice of quick-witted and sarcastic soul 22.
Set before the events of Soul, the original short is directed by 21-year Pixar veteran Kevin Nolting.
“While making Soul, we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie,” said Nolting. ‘22 vs. Earth was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material.”
In the short, 22 defies the rules of “The Great Before” and refuses to go to Earth, enlisting a gang of five other new souls in her attempt at rebellion.

The Oscar race for animated feature is between Pixar’s Black-led “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s hand-drawn Irish folktale, “Wolfwalkers” (co-produced by Apple Original Films). Both led Asifa-Hollywood’s prestigious Annie Awards, but the momentum is with “Soul.”
The other nominees include Pixar’s first fantasy, “Onward,” and two entries from Netflix: “Over the Moon,” the gorgeous musical fantasy about the Chinese Moon Goddess from Disney legend Glen Keane (Oscar winner for the “Dear Basketball” short), and Aardman’s “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.”
With director/chief creative officer Pete Docter at the helm, Pixar accomplished its most ambitious film yet by contrasting gritty New York City with the ethereal Great Before. That’s the pre-birth training center where aspiring jazz pianist Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) finds himself after eluding death in The Great Beyond. What do you want to be remembered for?
That’s the central question in “Soul,” Disney and Pixar’s upcoming existential animated adventure about a middle school music teacher (voiced by Jamie Foxx) who dreams of being a jazz performer.
“We only have a short time on this planet,” Foxx’s character Joe Gardner says in the new trailer released Thursday. “You want to become the person you were born to be. Don’t waste your time on all the junk of life. Spend your precious hours doing what will bring out the real you, the brilliant passionate you that’s willing to contribute something meaningful to this world.”
But before Joe gets his big musical break, he gets in an accident that causes his soul to be separated from his body. He is transported to the “You Seminar,” an ethereal center where souls are refined before being sent off to human bodies.

Following the seemingly Disney-mandated fourth outing of Toy Story, Pixar is getting back to original films next summer with Soul. Directed by Pete Docter and Kemp Powers, the story follows Joe Gardner, a middle-school band teacher whose true passion is playing jazz. If one thought Pixar may be taking a more realistic approach with this adventure, you would be mistaken as we end up peering inside Gardner in a fantastical, Inside Out-esque way, as the first teaser trailer hints.
“I think Joe is having that crisis that all artists have,” says Kemp Powers. “He’s increasingly feeling like his lifelong dream of being a jazz musician is not going to pan out and he’s asking himself ‘Why am I here? What am I meant to be doing?’ Joe personifies those questions.”

The first teaser trailer for Pixar’s “Soul” dropped Thursday. The latest movie from Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter promises to be a bold companion piece to his Oscar-winning “Inside Out,” traveling from the adolescent mind to the adult soul. Middle-school music teacher Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) dreams of becoming a jazz pianist for a band, and, after landing his first gig, he excitedly walks on down a retro-looking New York street and falls into a manhole to another world, where he encounters 22 (Tina Fey), a celestial teenage slacker from You Seminar, who helps him find his way back to Earth.
Docter has never shied away from confronting his own personal fears through his movies, and, in “Soul,” he tackles the self-absorbed artist in Gardner, who must learn to embrace a full range of experiences, wonders, and responsibilities through his cosmic journey with the nihilistic 22. The timing couldn’t be better,...

Disney and Pixar's upcoming animated feature, Soul, showcases the spiritual journey of a jaded jazz man.
Soul is the (contextually loaded) title of an intriguing new feature from Disney-Pixar. While the project had a long-held hush-hush status, the veil has finally been lifted with the first teaser trailer (seen just below), revealing a life-affirming metaphysical ordeal of a jaded jazz man (Jamie Foxx), who falls down a manhole and becomes a spirit, rediscovering his life priorities.
Pete Docter serves as director for Soul, bringing a breadth of Pixar experience as a writer and director for the aforementioned Monsters Inc. and Inside Out. Thus, the project is in ever-reliable hands with Docter, who's also serving as a producer, joined in that capacity by Dana Murray, an Oscar-nominated producer for 2017 short Lou, who also worked behind-the-scenes for Disney and Pixar in various duties for Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Inside Out,...
