- Was a speed coach for the 1970s Dallas Cowboys NFL team. This was in an era when teams did not normally employ "specialty" coaches. After the phenomenal success of the Cowboys that decade, due in large part to the speed training of Garland, other teams adopted the idea of specialty coaches, which continues to this day.
