HeBGB TV was among my favorite films I saw at Salem Horror Fest earlier this year, so I’m delighted that the frenetic horror-comedy anthology has made its way to Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s streaming service Screambox in time for Halloween.
In my review, I called it “a high-camp blend of the wistful glow of Wnuf Halloween Special, the uninhibited hyperactivity of Rick and Morty‘s “Interdimensional Cable” episodes, and the absurd unpredictability of Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks.”
What I didn’t mention was all nods to genre favorites peppered throughout the film.
Here are 17 horror references in HeBGB TV.
1. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
HeBGB TV’s opening credits are inspired by the Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers title sequence, which perfectly captures the autumnal atmosphere.
2. Creature from the Black Lagoon
The boy in the opening scene is playing with a Creature from the Black Lagoon figure.

Arrow Video have announced brand new 4K restorations of both Demons and its sequel Demons 2, presented in more vivid and terrifying ways than ever before, alongside a wealth of bonus features old and new, making this the ultimate experience in celluloid terror.
In the early 1980s, Dario Argento, the famed horror maestro responsible for such classics as Suspiria and Deep Red, branched out from directing into producing, shepherding the work of his fellow filmmakers to the screen – among them Lamberto Bava, son of the legendary Mario Bava. Together, they crafted two tales of terror that would become synonymous with Italian 80s horror, in which the veil between the real world and the silver screen is torn asunder.

Severin Films do a great service for those of us who aren’t as familiar with the “second tier” Italian horror filmmakers like Bruno Mattei. I just haven’t seen much of his work, but of what I have, The Other Hell (1981) is my favorite. I should say it’s my favorite film of his that borrows from Carrie and The Exorcist; apparently I need to start a new list of faves that are influenced by Aliens and The Terminator, starting with Shocking Dark (1989), a jaw-dropping mush of both that manages to entertain almost as much as either.
Aka Terminator II in certain markets, the term “rip-off” was pretty much perfected by Shocking Dark; but this was neither Mattei or co-screenwriters Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi (Troll 2) fault, but rather producers eager to jump on Cameron’s bandwagon and hijack it before it reached the next station. This Tuesday, our fine friends at Severin Films are releasing a trio of Rosella Drudi/Claudio Fragasso penned classics of late '80s Italian horror. Perhaps the most impressive and crazy entertaining of the trio is Burno Mattei's Shocking Dark, a blatant Aliens ripoff set in the near future in a Venice choked by pollution. In the film, a team called the Mega Force is deployed to neutralize an unknown threat beneath the streets of Venice, only to find themselves as prey for some slimy rubber frog alien creatures. Leading the commando force is Koster, played by '80s Italian cinema icon Geretta Geretta (Demons). To celebrate the release of the film on Blu-ray, Severin have recreated...

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash we have very little reason to be interested in them. – Pauline Kael.
The above quote from the late, legendary American film critic Kael was most certainly not referring to Lamberto Bava’s Demons (1985), but a lot of films in our beloved genre bow to this description. Demons is great trash – it wants nothing more to assault your senses with a barrage of images and sound for 88 minutes before you even know what hit you, and does so while breathing that rarified Italian air.
But I’m sure she was referring to a film like Demons – one made with a ton of style, by a filmmaker impassioned with his chosen topic, as ridiculous as that plays on the screen. And make no mistake, Demons is ridiculous; as a matter of fact, it starts there before rapidly ascending to the sublime.

In 1989, Italian director Bruno Mattei made an amalgam of Aliens and The Terminator. We look back at a wonderfully bad film...
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then a 1989 Italian film called Shocking Dark pays James Cameron the ultimate compliment: it openly steals from not one but two of his 80s hits.
Now, it’s no secret that B-movie filmmakers have long taken ‘inspiration’ from hit genre movies - Star Wars, Alien, Jaws and Mad Max are some of the most imitated films of the 70s and 80s, spawning such cult B-movies as StarCrash, 1990: Bronx Warriors and Contamination.
Shocking Dark, on the other hand, occupies its own special place in movie history. We’re not just talking about an attempt to evoke the general atmosphere of a successful film here - we’re talking about the wholesale recreation of entire sequences. As an example, consider the following...

At the tail end of last year, Synapse Films released limited edition steelbook versions of Italian horror flicks Demons and Demons 2 on Blu-ray, which were packed with bonus features and sold out before most fans could say "Geretta Geretta."
As reported today by DVD Active, this November Synapse will be re-releasing both of the cult favorites onto Blu-ray, leaving behind the steelbook cases as well as the bonus content. Why is this noteworthy? Because the discs at long last give those of us who missed out on last year's souped up releases the chance to own the films in high-def without breaking the bank.
The site reports that the bare bones discs will likely have none of the exclusive extras that were available on the limited releases, though they note that both releases will include high-definition 1080p transfers taken from original vault materials in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio, featuring all-new color correction.

A good, creepy prop can make or break your production. If you get just the right item, you can make it a memorable and powerful addition to your film. In celebration The Monkey's Paw release on Blu-ray and DVD from Scream Factory, which contains a pretty gross prop of its own, we've decided to reminisce about some of our favorites.
Of course we must begin with some honorable mentions. The stickman figures that hung in the woods during The Blair Witch Project became the trademark for the film that scared the hell out of us that long ago summer.
If you pay close attention to Return of the Living Dead, you can see a reanimated half-dog (literally the left-hand side of a dog, bisected for research purposes) in the warehouse of the Uneeda Medical Supply Company. That's gotta get a nod.
Although perhaps more wardrobe than prop, "Buffalo Bill" Jame...

There's nothing worse than finding a cool book or scroll or other form of communique containing a bunch of mysterious incantations. It's always a kick in the ass when you unsuspectingly read one of them aloud, and next thing you know... bad things start happening. Bad things, man.
Such is the case for our heroes in the upcoming film Knights of Badassdom. One little thing goes wrong, and the next thing you know our crew (played by Peter Dinklage, Steve Zahn and Ryan Kwanten) are fighting for their lives against the forces of evil.
This got us thinking back to some other unfortunate souls who did the same thing and found themselves with their asses in a sling when accidentally bringing something to our world from another realm. I can't even get the cable guy to come out to make a service call when I need him, and these guys are conjuring demons from beyond?...

Okay, kids. Time to drool a little bit as we're about to show you two amazing packages for Synapse Films' upcoming Blu-ray releases of the classic flicks Demons and Demons 2. The word "badass" is an understatement.
From the Synapse Films Website
We wanted to keep everyone updated on Demons and Demons 2, and we’re pleased to announce a little surprise with these two titles. Synapse Films has been approached by Scanavo, the makers of the Steelbook cases for Blu-ray and DVD, and we have decided to do something a little special for the fans.
As many of you know, for the past few years, Synapse has done “Limited Edition” versions of some of our titles near the holidays. We did the limited edition Blu of Intruder with the workprint (sold out in 3 weeks), and last year we did the limited edition Blu of The Definitive Document Of The Dead...

“Demons” (1985)
Directed By: Lamberto Bava
Written By: Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Franco Ferrini, Dardano Sacchetti
Starring: Urbano Barberini (George), Natasha Hovey (Cheryl), Karl Zinny (Ken), Fiore Argento (Hannah), Paola Cozzo (Kathy), Fabiola Toledo (Carmen), Nicoletta Elmi (Ingrid), Stelio Candelli (Frank), Nicole Tessier (Ruth) Geretta Geretta (Rosemary), Bobby Rhodes (Tony), Guidi Baldi (Tommy), Bettini Ciampolini (Nina), Giuseppe Mauro Cruciano (Hot Dog), Sally Day (Liz)
“Demons” is one of the definitive horror movies for any fan of Italian horror films. It was one of the first Italian films I ever watched several years ago and instantly became one of my favorites. It’s not perfect by any means but I don’t think that was the intention. The movie makes up for any flaws with its superb practical effects that constantly keeps the story moving in its speedy pace.
The movie takes place primarily inside a movie theater in Berlin.

Even though Halloween fever is currently on everyone's minds (and rightly so), after it passes, the holidays will be right around the corner. Might as well start your planning so that they're as full of mayhem as they are mirth, and Bloody Christmas looks to be a great starting point!
From the Press Release
In the grand tradition of holiday horrors (Halloween, April Fool's Day, Happy Birthday to Me) comes Bloody Christmas, a new film from Long Island filmmaker Michael Shershenovich, available via Planetworks and Mvd on October 23rd. The film offers a unique experience by shying away from a typical slasher and drifting into stylish cinematography, all while not taking the subject matter too seriously.
Paul Awful of Movies From Mars writes:
"One scene that stands out visually is a dream sequence (or should I say nightmare) which was shot on 16mm that gets the audience inside a demented and damaged Santa Clause mind.

At the end of last month the Republican National Convention took place. Mitt Romney, the presidential nominee of the party was paraded around along with his wife Ann, and his vice presidential choice, Paul Ryan and his wife, Janna. During the event Jason Biggs went on a vulgar tirade tweeting inappropriate comments toward Christians, Paul Ryan, Ann Romney, Clint Eastwood, and Janna Ryan. I deemed the tweets too offensive to be posted here, but you can view them at The Blaze. Biggs' tweets seem more like something Stifler, of his popular American Pie franchise, would've wrote, and less like an actor that was just hired to voice a character on a children's show. What makes things even worse, several days later the account used to promote Nickelodeon's Turtles series encouraged followers to check out Biggs' twitter page. The offensive tweets have been deleted and Nickelodeon has issued a statement: “Nickelodeon...

As horror fans, many of us remember the exact moment we fell in love with the genre. Whether it was the first time we were blown away by a particular film or got our first look at some of the characters that would go on to become icons of modern horror.
Our love of scary movies had to come from somewhere, and most of us can remember precisely when and where that was.
I recall it quite clearly…a normal summer 26 years ago. It would not appear to be a particularly outstanding season to the average person, but it was that summer, the Summer of 1986, and one small town movie theater, that forged my love of horror. And it is for that reason that we give a big Doctor Gash Tip of the Scalpel to The Community Theater and the Bloodbath of '86.

For Roto-Rooter plumber (yes, he still does plumbing) and paranormal investigator Jason Hawes of Syfy's long-running Wednesday-night reality hit "Ghost Hunters," currently airing new episodes, life after his longtime partner, Grant Wilson, left the TV show is pretty much like life before he left the TV show.
"It's funny," Hawes says, "the absence of Grant is only to the viewers of the show. I still talk with Grant all the time; we meet up all the time. He's still involved in the Taps [The Atlantic Paranormal Society] home team and things of that nature, and other things we've been doing for many, many years.
"As for him not being on the show anymore and not being on the road with me, it was a little odd in the beginning, but then again, I worked with Steve [Gonsalves] for years before Grant and me hung out, and Grant was really involved.

What exactly happened when Clint Eastwood was onstage at the Republican National Convention? The one thing we can agree on was that it was unexpected--by the Republicans, by the audience, perhaps even by Eastwood, who we now know was ad-libbing. It takes brass balls to ad-lib for 12 minutes in front of 30 million people on live TV, just working with yourself and an empty chair.
Two days later, not a word of Romney's acceptance speech has entered the public discourse. But Eastwood's dialog with a chair has entered forever into political legend, and it's amusing to read reports that his viewers from around the world were mystified. Iranian Facebook pages "treated it with suspicious befuddlement," an Atlantic blog reports, and in China the speech is being used to teach English on a web site. The headline says, "Gelivable English Langauge Teaching: Exchange Cooperation Model Innovation," says the Atlantic's Max Fisher, who...

Rep. Paul Ryan may be grabbing most of the headlines since he was announced as Governor Mitt Romney's running mate in the 2012 presidential election, but people are also intrigued by the attractive blonde in the background.
Janna Ryan is Paul Ryan's wife of nearly 12 years. She was born Janna Little and raised in a prominent Democrat family in Oklahoma. In fact, her first cousin is Democratic Congressman from Oklahoma Dan Boren. After attending Wellesley undergrad just like her mother, Janna went to George Washington Law School and became a tax attorney in Washington D.C.
She and Paul met in early 1999, just a couple months into Ryan's first term in Congress, and were married in December of 2000. They have three children -- Elizabeth, 10, Charles, 8, and Samuel, 7.
In their home state of Wisconsin, the Ryans are friends with Sean Duffy and Rachel Campos-Duffy. Duffy is also a Republican congressman...

However tough and tight the race against President Obama gets this fall, Janna Ryan predicts that her husband Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney can count on one thing: fun. People was first to sit down with the freshly minted Republican presidential ticket and their wives on Sunday morning, 24 hours after Romney announced the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman as his pick for a running mate. The two candidates, Mrs. Ryan and Romney's wife, Ann, laughed easily aboard their campaign bus between stops in North Carolina. Asked what Romney should know about her husband's work style and personal habits, Mrs. Ryan said: "You know,...

On October 14th, Lucky McKee's new film, The Woman (review here), adapted from the Jack Ketchum novel, will open in limited release. It's the story of a feral woman and the unfortunate family who attempts to civilize her. Believe me, this chick needs more than finishing school.

There is a place where Horror lovers can go and feel like they're part of something. A wonderfully twisted family. A place where, finally, they're not the outcasts with weird tastes and they're not the freaks for loving gore. The people outside these walls who don't have the stomach to see someone's eye plucked out of their head are the freaks here. That place is Creation Entertainment's Weekend Of Horrors.
This year's Mecca of Horror was at the Marriot at the Los Angeles Airport. All the little gore hounds flocked to multiple rooms of entertainment and spectacle like the Theater Room that featured many legendary Horror actors, actresses and filmmakers in discussion panels and Q&A's like the great John Carpenter, Tom Savini and Asia Argento as well as reunions of the cast and crew of such classic films as Demons and Nightmare on Elm Street.

With the holiday season just around the corner (can you believe it?), there's one gift that everyone should give: a tiny replica of a horny militant serial-killing puppet who's so naughty he's nice!

Cult Collectibles is proud to announce the release of its first "Weird Wobbler" bobblehead style figure from one of the most outrageous underground films ever made: Black Devil Doll!
The 2008 film is the story of an executed Black militant who is reincarnated into a vicious ventriloquist’s puppet, causing endless mayhem and murder (to put it mildly). Widely hailed by cult film aficionados and simultaneously condemned for its overt (yet completely tongue-in-cheek) offensiveness, Art Ettinger of Ultra Violent magazine stated, "Black Devil Doll is a triumph, seamlessly blending crass un-pc humor with cerebral artistry. The Lewis Brothers deliver one of the most original exploitation films of the new millennium, a singularly unique mix of brain and brawn.
