Wilmer Valderrama has a very personal reason for launching “Essential Voices,” his podcast featuring interviews with essential and frontline workers. His dad battled Covid-19 and suffered two minor heart attacks in the past year. “They showed up and helped my dad be with us for many more years,” the “NCIS” star tells me. “I’m so thankful, and I want to make sure their voices are heard. That’s my small contribution back for what they’ve done for my family.” Today, his father’s recovery is progressing. “He’s still working through his respiratory stuff, and he’s still trying to get his stamina back,” Valderrama says. “He’s working out every day. I always joke with him that he reminds me of Stella because he’s trying to get his groove back.”

Jack Whitehall says he didn’t know that his character McGregor in “Jungle Cruise” was gay when he originally auditioned for the film.
“When I first read the script, there was only a like a couple of sides,” the British actor told me at the movie’s premiere at Disneyland. “So yeah, there wasn’t any indication of that. It was quite a long casting process.”
In the Jaume Collet-Serra-directed film, inspired by the iconic Disneyland ride of the same name, McGregor comes out to the skipper, Frank, played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. While he doesn’t use the word “gay,” he says he broke off three engagements with women because his “interests happily lay elsewhere.” He goes on to say that he would do anything for his sister Lily (Emily Blunt), because she was the only one who “stood by” him while he was shunned by family...

Last year we had a docu about the aftermath/current state of the Arab Spring (Jehane Noujaim’s The Square), so keeping with the same subject thematic, we could technically be following this up with An African Spring. Winner of the Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival for her debut film, A Normal Life which she then followed by the popular Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love (2009) and Touba, the SXSW Special Jury Prize for Best Cinematography (2013), Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi mathematically has good chances to squeeze into the comp.

He's made his name playing insufferable public school toffs. But is that the real Jack Whitehall?
Jack Whitehall sits outside a Putney cafe, looking slightly harassed. This is his third attempt at finding an interview venue. The first place he suggested we meet was closed, not unsurprisingly, given that it was a pub and it's 10.30 on a Wednesday morning. So he suggested another pub, also closed. Eventually, he leads me on a lengthy walk to discover somewhere that isn't a pub. Does he know this area? He frowns: yes, he grew up in Putney and still lives here. "My parents' house is just down there," he says, pointing across the road.
You could suggest that this is all very Jack Whitehall-ish. He has, after all, made a career out of playing clueless public schoolboys of varying degrees of ghastliness. Pj in Fresh Meat, the student sitcom by Jesse Armstrong...
