As both a prequel and sequel to various versions of the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Discovery often includes unexpected easter eggs and references to the entire saga. The latest episode, “Mirrors,” is no exception, as it brings back a famous Star Trek ship, as well as answers questions about a mysterious alien species, which has been around since the 1990s.
From references to the goatee version of Spock, to some deep-cuts from Deep Space Nine, and even a tribble joke, Discovery’s easter eggs in season 5, episode 5 aren’t messing around. Pop quiz hot shot: What’s the best action movie of the past 20 or 30 years that never received a cinematic sequel? Nope, it’s not Speed. Is it Wanted? Nobody? The Accountant? How about Knight and Day or American Made? While the latter comes from director Doug Liman, we’d argue that the correct answer is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman’s eminently watchable assassin thriller that continues to shine thanks to the explosive chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, two luminous movie stars who met and fell in love during production. Although the movie earned decent reviews and grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith never received an official sequel or cinematic spinoff and is often remembered for the juicy tabloid gossip surrounding its two superstars.
Yet, in 2024, a small-screen adaptation of Liman’s hit action flick has been produced by Amazon Prime Video,...

Exclusive: The ancient Scottish town of St Andrews was hit with a heavy bout of Spidey fever this past weekend as the third annual Sands International Film Festival opened, pulling in an eclectic set of films, filmmakers, and speakers alongside one popular guest of honor.
Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, also known for The Impossible, Cherry, and The Devil All the Time passed through the fest, which opened with a screening of Last Call, a short project he leads with Lindsay Duncan (Blackbird) that was co-written and directed by his brother, Harry Holland. The Holland brothers also took part in the first annual Sands golf tournament, which will continue as part of the festival’s wider activities. It was on the pristine golfing greens where Tom linked up with Deadline to discuss his career so far and plans for future projects, including whether he will return for a fourth Spider-Man movie.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."
For many Trekkies, "Star Trek: Discovery" has always felt a little like the younger brother clinging onto the franchise's back. The sky-high stakes that always seem to threaten the universe, the heavily serialized nature from episode to episode, and even the way these heart-on-their-sleeve characters carry themselves throughout their duties has all but screamed the fact that this show was meant for younger, more modern audiences.
So imagine our surprise when episode 4 of this final season suddenly dipped into its bag of tricks to unleash not one, but two classic examples of TV tropes that hearken back to the days of "The Original Series." The "time bug" kicks everything off, catching Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) in the most quintessential of Trekkian problems: a time loop. Although not unfamiliar territory for our...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds renewed for season 4 but Star Trek: Lower Decks will end with season 5
Good news for Captain Christoper Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise as Variety reports that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for season 4. A couple beloved “Star Trek” shows are living ever longer and prospering on Paramount+. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.
“Strange New Worlds” — set in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) commanded the USS Enterprise, and featuring younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Kirk (Paul Wesley) — has been a fan favorite since it premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Season 2 of the series, which included a musical episode and a crossover episode with “Lower Decks,” made Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" might be considered the most lighthearted show in the vast canon of "Trek." It's a series that returned to an episodic structure, allowing its stories to conclude at the end of an hour, rather than stretching them across an entire season -- and sometimes well past their breaking point. The old-world structure has allowed the showrunners to experiment with genre in ways not previously tried on "Star Trek." One episode may be a body-swap comedy, while the next is a terse horror tale. There are a few steely, soul-crushing wartime dramas sprinkled throughout, but their headiness is leavened by lightweight time-travel stories, party-animated crossovers, and an episode in which Spock becomes a human and eats too much bacon. The most notorious "Strange New Worlds" episode is likely "Subspace Rhapsody," a full-on musical.

Forget Booksmart – actor-director Olivia Wilde is about to get comic-book-smart. In an unexpected but not at all unwelcome turn of events, the Don't Worry Darling filmmaker is, according to THR, set to bring Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld's cult '90s comic series Avengelyne to the big screen. And what's more, Margot Robbie — no stranger to a superhero movie or two herself — is also aboard, and will co-produce alongside Deadpool writer-producer Simon Kinberg under her LuckyChap banner.
Now, we know what you're thinking: "Who the heck is Avengelyne? An avenger? An angel?" Well try avenging angel and you're just about there. Created by Liefeld and the appropriately-named Cathy Christian, Avengelyne debuted in Avengelyne: Deadly Sins #1 in 1995. An angel cast out of heaven for questioning God's love of humanity, Avengelyne uses her divine powers — super strength, regenerative healing, necromancy, the odd holy sword, and, err, miraculous blood — to fight demons on...

Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie and “X-Men” producer Simon Kinberg are joining forces for a feature adaptation of “Avengelyne,” a comic book character from “Deadpool” co-creator Rob Liefeld.
Wilde, whose filmmaking credits include “Booksmart” and “Don’t Worry Darling,” is attached to direct. Robbie’s company LuckyChap and her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara are producing. Kinberg, a writer and producer of “X-Men” tentpoles, will also produce the film.
The project doesn’t have a home yet, so the creative team will try to sell the film to studios and streamers in the coming weeks. One of the more persistent conversations that has buoyed several decades worth of nerd conversations is the old "Star Trek" vs. "Star Wars" saw. Do you, dear reader, prefer stern diplomacy, mechanically inclined stories, ethical dilemmas, and constant reference to classic literature of the Western Canon? Then "Star Trek" is for you. You may, however, prefer fable-like tales of derring-do, heroic space-bound violence, and archetypal myths of good vs. evil. If you like your sci-fi to have an ancient flavor and fantastical elements out of King Arthur, then you may prefer "Star Wars."
Which one is better? The answer, of course, is "Star Trek." But which one is more successful and widespread? Frustratingly, the answer is "Star Wars." "Star Trek" has long been more successful on TV, telling hour-long morality tales and pushing up against low budgets. It was about multiculturalism and equality. "Star Wars," meanwhile, got its mileage from simple tales of violent victory,...

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has a knack for proving skeptics wrong. You say Paramount+ can't do a prequel "Star Trek" series that reimagines iconic characters like Spock, Kirk, and Uhura with a cast of new actors? Watch them. Think it's impossible to strike the original series' balance between earnest pathos, sci-fi geekery, warm-hearted hijinks, and indelible camp? Think again. Don't even get this show started on which genres do and don't check classic "Star Trek" boxes; it'll blow your personal definition of classic "Trek" wide open with a Medieval costume drama, an animation-live action crossover, a musical, or -- in the upcoming season, according to Variety -- a "Hollywood murder mystery."

Three of the 12 "Star Trek" shows to date begin with the same familiar narration, which was originally spoken by Captain Kirk (William Shatner) in 1966:
"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise, its five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."
For "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" (2022), "no man" was changed to "no one." "Next Generation" was also a "continuing mission" and not a "five-year mission." That narration has come to represent the ethos of the entire "Star Trek" franchise, highlighting that the various shows and movies are about exploration, new life, and going boldly. Unlike the title crawl of "Star Wars," there is no talk of conflict, conquering enemies, or asserting dominance. In the original series, the narration played over a gentle...

Keanu Reeves appeared in 2005’s superhero horror movie Constantine, directed by Francis Lawrence which was loosely based on the DC Comics/Vertigo Comics Hellblazer graphic novels. For the first time in 27 years, Rob Liefeld’s Extreme Universe is invading the real-world with a line of action figures. Figures of the Bloodstrike character Cabbot Stone as well as the intergalactic mercenary Bloodwulf will arrive in the third quarter of this year, the comic book creator announced.
Liefeld, best known for Marvel’s Deadpool, has teamed with LooseCollector, a collectibles company specializing in action figures and statues. In a statement, founder Dave Cardenas said he expects to expand into more Extreme Universe characters in 2025.
Liefeld debuted Bloodstrike and Bloodwulf in 1992 in the pages of Image Comics, the indie publisher he and six other former Marvel and DC artists launched that year. Each sold more than 1 million copies, showing the appetite for new characters in the early ’90s comic book boom.
In addition to the action figures, Liefeld has the Bloodstrike: Battle Blood collection out from Image in May.

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard was a big success, not just for Paramount+, but for the fans as well, who were delighted to see The Next Generation crew together one more time. While it may have felt like Patrick Stewart’s farewell to the franchise, the actor is still hungry for more, and he revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that a script for a Star Trek: Picard movie is being written.
“I heard only last night about a script that is being written, but written specifically with the actor, Patrick [Stewart], to play in it,” Stewart said. “And I’ve been told to expect to receive it within a week or so. I’m so excited because it sounds like the kind of project where the experimentation that I want to do will be essential for this kind of material.” When asked if the movie...

"Batman & Robin" is an infamous movie, in no small part thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger's turn as the villainous Mr. Freeze. Was the casting of such a big-name star a mandate from Warner Bros? Nope! Director Joel Schumacher personally chose Arnold for the part. Reading Akiva Goldsman's script for the film, Schumacher found the dialogue for Mr. Freeze, intended to be "Shakespearean," to instead be "hysterical. In my head, I was reading Freeze's dialogue as Schwarzenegger."
So, Schumacher called up Arnold and asked him to play the part. As Schwarzenegger recounts in "The Making of 'Batman & Robin' | Behind The Scenes."
"Joel Schumacher came to me and said that he would like me to play Mr. Freeze. 'I would not direct the movie, because I only can do this movie if you play Mr. Freeze.' So, what are you gonna do? I mean, screw up a whole movie?...

George Clooney shocked the DC Universe this summer when he returned to the role of Bruce Wayne, after 25 years, for a cameo appearance in The Flash — and is now confirming that was a one-and-done reprisal.
Clooney infamously played Bruce Wayne/Batman in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, the 1997 movie that was considered one of the worst superhero films of all time. The actor has repeatedly spoken out against the film, telling Howard Stern in 2020, “Akiva Goldsman — who’s won the Oscar for writing since then — he wrote the screenplay. And it’s a terrible screenplay, he’ll tell you. I’m terrible in it, I’ll tell you.”
But in June, Clooney made a surprise return to the role in the final moments of The Flash, as Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen is on the phone with Bruce Wayne after finally returning to his own Earth and timeline. Wayne...

Will Smith confirmed a sequel to 2007’s “I Am Legend” remains in the works — and that costar Michael B. Jordan is on board. He told the audience at Saudia Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival that the second film will be utilizing the alternate ending from the first film’s DVD extras that indicated his character was still alive, which screenwriter Akiva Goldsman had brought up earlier this year.
Smith also said, “I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. The script just came in… I’m probably giving away too much information.”
“We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived,” he added. “I can’t tell you any more, but Michael B. Jordan is in and we’re doing it.”

“Whenever I break down a character, the first thing I do is I’ll pick out the moments that I relate to with the character,” reveals Tom Holland in our recent webchat. He adds, “I build on that. That’s how I make a character that is true to myself while representing different things. With ‘The Crowded Room,’ I couldn’t really find anything. It feels like the biggest departure from myself. I really don’t see myself in it at all. It’s liberating to watch, but it’s quite scary when you’re doing it. Danny felt like a real stranger. I felt like I didn’t know him at all. It felt quite unnerving.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

Director Francis Lawrence, renowned for his work on the Hunger Games series, is venturing into familiar yet intriguing territory with the initial discussions of a Constantine sequel. The original 2005 film, a unique blend of supernatural and superhero elements, captivated a diverse audience, and now there’s a spark of hope for its continuation. Teaming up with Keanu Reeves and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, Lawrence is in the preliminary stages of bringing Constantine 2 to life.
Navigating through the complexities of the film industry and changes at DC, the project has faced its share of challenges. Despite these obstacles, Lawrence and his team are pushing forward. The recent halt due to a strike is only a temporary setback, with plans to reconvene after Thanksgiving.
Lawrence’s approach to storytelling, especially evident in his latest Hunger Games film, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, demonstrates his ability to delve into complex narratives and character dynamics.

[This story contains spoilers for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.]
Prequels are tough to get right. For every Better Call Saul, there are ten more stories that failed to enrich the works that came before them. However, Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes manages to not only stand on its own, but as a prequel, it also deepens the text of the Hunger Games films starring Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen.
The filmmaker chalks it up to the strength of author Suzanne Collins’ source material, as well as the performances of his two leads, Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler. In one of the climactic scenes of the film, Blyth has to sell Coriolanus Snow’s transformation that would later define Donald Sutherland’s tyrannical version of the character, and Lawrence remains in awe of what the young actor accomplished with minimal dialogue.
“[The forest sequence] my favorite sequence in the movie.

Warner Bros. and producer Akiva Goldsman‘s company Weed Road are working on a sequel to director Francis Lawrence’s 2007 Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend (watch it Here), which will see Will Smith reprising the role of Dr. Robert Neville, now joined in the cast by an unspecified character played by Michael B. Jordan. Lawrence has said he would “love to” return to the direct the sequel… which is made possible because there were two different endings filmed for I Am Legend. The version of I Am Legend that reached theatres ended with Neville sacrificing himself (using a grenade to blow up himself and the attacking “Darkseeker” creatures) to protect other characters. But that ending was actually a reshoot. The original ending was more low-key, with Neville making peace with the Darkseekers after realizing that he was the monster in the eyes of these creatures. It's a miracle Peter Berg's "Hancock" exists at all.
The revisionist Will Smith superhero flick began life in 1996 as a spec screenplay by Vy Vincent Ngo called "Tonight, He Comes." The tale of a surly, alcoholic antihero was way ahead of its time; it was a refutation of comic book movies that weren't being made in the absurd volume we're seeing today. It was also startlingly original, which prompted no less an A-lister than Tony Scott to acquire it as a potential directing project. It was one of the hottest scripts in Hollywood, and, for six solid years, it went absolutely nowhere.
"Tonight, He Comes" nearly went before cameras in the early 2000s under the direction of Michael Mann, then nearly came to fruition with the likes of Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino at the helm. Vince Gilligan and John August were brought in to rework the script in...

It was announced several years ago that J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions was developing a new Constantine TV series for Max, but a recent report from Variety confirms that the project has officially been scrapped. I know, not exactly a surprise, but the series got further ahead than you might have thought.
According to the report, the Constantine TV series was far enough along that they were already in talks with an actor to play the leading role before it was scrapped. There had been rumours that Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London) was being eyed to play Constantine, but nothing was ever confirmed. The series would have been set in contemporary London, and four scripts had been written.

It’s been a roller coaster for ‘Constantine’ fans. Ever since the 2005 cult hit starring Keanu Reeves was released, whispers of a sequel have floated around. And now, there’s renewed hope with both Reeves and the film’s original director, Francis Lawrence, hinting at a comeback.
The 2005 film introduced us to John Constantine, an exceptional exorcist who could see the dark and divine beings of the world. His mission was straightforward: banish every demon to hell and earn a spot in heaven. With standout performances by Rachel Weisz and Tilda Swinton, the film managed a whopping $230 million at the global box office.
But the road to a sequel has been anything but smooth. There were several reasons for the delay, but Francis Lawrence recently told GameSpot that this year’s writers strike was a big hurdle. However, this recent setback isn’t the entire story. There were challenges even before.

Francis Lawrence is giving an update on the development of Constantine 2 with Keanu Reeves and things are seemingly moving along.
The sequel to the 2005 superhero horror film was stalled due to the writers strike but with writers back at work, Lawrence has been in meetings with Reeves to continue the saga.

Lawrence continued, “Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen–the script has to be written–but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make...

Lawrence continued, “Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen–the script has to be written–but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make...

Variety reported last fall that Keanu Reeves was in talks to return for a sequel to “Constantine,” the 2005 superhero horror movie based on the graphic novels from DC Comics and Vertigo Comics. Francis Lawrence, the 2005 film’s director, offered a small but notable update on the project. The filmmaker is set to return alongside Reeves for the sequel.
It turns out a script for “Constantine 2” still does not exist — it got held up by the WGA strike, which is now over — but the two men and original producer Akiva Goldsman are hashing out the story.
“So ‘Constantine 2’ got obviously held up by the writers strike,” Lawrence recently told GameSpot. “And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control.”

Director Francis Lawrence has brought the Hunger Games franchise to the big screen and will be continuing his involvement with the series with the upcoming prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, starring Rachel Zegler. However, back in 2005, the director made an impressive feature debut with the movie adaptation of the DC comic Hellblazer, with the Keanu Reeves horror-action vehicle, Constantine. Fans of the film had been clamoring for a sequel since, but none has come to fruition. However, 2014 brought the character to an NBC series that would only last one season.
According to BingeHulu, Lawrence recently gave an interview with GameSpot, in which he updated readers on the state of Constantine 2, which had been in development for quite a long time. Lawrence mentions, “So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers’ strike. And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to...

Screenwriter Robin Swicord hasn’t seen “Practical Magic” in the 25 years since it was released. For her, it’s hard to remember much about the film outside of “trying to figure the movie out and do my best to write something that would get made and be worth it,” she told TheWrap in an exclusive interview. Swicord is Hollywood’s go-to screenwriter when the town needs a book adaptation. Her writing has defined a generation from her 1994 adaptation of “Little Women” to working with perceived unadaptable material like 2005’s “Memoirs of a Geisha.”
“Practical Magic” is a bittersweet topic for Swicord, though, due to changes with the script that would eventually be credited to her, as well as Akiva Goldsman and Adam Brooks. Creative clashes with director Griffin Dunne compelled Swicord to “write that one off,” she said. A surprising admission given the film’s beloved status by many, especially when fall rolls around.
