Thirty-five years later, we're still having the time of our lives. Made for just 6 million, no one expected Dirty Dancing to be a hit—let alone become an enduring pop culture phenomenon—when it was released on Aug. 21, 1987. In fact, producer Linda Gottlieb revealed in 2012 that the script was turned down 43 times before a small studio, Vestron, finally agreed to make the movie. But Dirty Dancing defied expectations, making 214 million at the box office and later going on to win an Oscar. The key to the film's success was likely the chemistry between its two leads, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, as naïve resort guest Baby and charismatic dance teacher Johnny turned...

Warner Records will issue the soundtrack for actress Halle Berry’s directorial debut film “Bruised” on Nov. 19. The Netflix feature — which Berry also stars in as a disgraced M.M.A. fighter — debuts on the streamer on Nov. 24, after a limited one-week run in theaters.
“I can’t wait to show it,” Berry tells Variety. “I have to tell you, one of the things I’m most excited about is the title song that H.E.R. sang… and she killed it. So I can’t wait to share with everyone and am super excited.”
Hand-selected by executive producers Berry and Cardi B, the film’s soundtrack features six original songs by award-winning and multi-platinum female artists, including Cardi B (“Bet It”), Saweetie (“Attitude”), City Girls (“Scared”), H.E.R. Joan Micklin Silver, a film director who broke several barriers for female filmmakers, died Thursday at her Manhattan home. She was 85 and her death was attributed to vascular dementia by her daughter.
Silver’s 1975 film Hester Street, the story of an immigrant Jewish couple on the Lower East Side of Manhattan set in the 1890s, was turned down by various studios as “too ethnic.” Silver also faced discrimination as a female film director. So backed by family members, she made the movie on a low budget in 34 days. The black and white film was in Yiddish with English subtitles.
Ms. Silver’s husband, Raphael D. Silver, was a tireless supporter. A commercial real estate developer, he financed the film and even worked to get it distribution. The film went on to earn $5 million after its October 1975 debut, a massive increase from its $370,000 budget. Actress Carol Kane was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award.

Joan Micklin Silver, the director of films like “Crossing Delancy,” “Hester Street,” and “Between the Lines” died on Thursday at the age of 85, The New York Times reports. Her daughter, Claudia Silver, told the paper that the cause of death was vascular dementia. In addition to Claudia, Silver’s survivors include two other daughters, Dina and Marisa Silver; a sister, Renee; and five grandchildren. Her long-time husband, Raphael D. Silver, died at age 83 in 2013 after a skiing accident in Park City, Utah.
An indie pioneer who first got her start writing a series of educational films for companies like Encyclopedia Britannica and the Learning Corporation of America in the 1970s, Silver was long aware of the barriers that would likely prevent her from entering into the male-dominated filmmaking milieu.
And yet the Omaha native soon made her own opportunities, including writing and directing her first film, the low-budget drama 1975 “Hester Street.

Netflix is about to knock out competitors for the worldwide distribution rights to Halle Berry’s directorial debut.
Berry’s “Bruised,” an Mma drama that is screening as a work-in-progress at the Toronto Film Festival, is stitching up a sale close to $20 million, insiders familiar with negotiations said. Endeavor Content is repping filmmakers in the deal, with Sierra/Affinity assisting on international.
The director also stars in this tale of a washed-up Mma fighter struggling for redemption as both an athlete and a mother. Berry directed from a script by Michelle Rosenfarb. Though the film will screen virtually on Saturday from Toronto, it’s unclear when the picture will lock and deliver to the streaming service.
Berry was the cover star of Variety‘s TIFF preview issue, wherein she discussed her journey to the screen — and the two broken ribs that almost halted production on her big jump to the director’s chair.

Exclusive: Netflix is getting the Toronto International Film Festival off to a strong start with a figurative and literal punch in the face. Deadline hears the streamer is firming an 8-figure sum for world rights to Bruised, the mixed martial arts drama that marks the directorial debut of Halle Berry. It’s the first major deal on the (virtual) ground at TIFF. Netflix got a preemptive look at the film — which is premiering at Toronto as a work in progress — and took it off the table before its virtual premiere Saturday. When all done, deal will be high-teens, not far from $20 million, sources said. Endeavor Content and Netflix are closing it up right now.

Nostalgia alert! "Dirty Dancing" turned 25 on Tuesday, prompting many to scratch their heads and mutter something about time flying while reminiscing about the timeless love story. And though Patrick Swayze passed away almost three years ago, his performance -- and that of a young Jennifer Grey -- lives on, both on screen and in the minds of the movie's many fans.
Grey and Swayze weren't the only stars of the show. Devotees will remember Jane Brucker's turn as Lisa Houseman, the ever-confident singer/dancer and older sister of Grey's character Baby. Brucker went on to star in a few other projects, appearing on the small screen in "Wiseguy" and "Ellen" and in theaters in the film "Stealing Home." Eventually, however, she decided to go into semi-retirement and focus on raising her two daughters. She still occasionally acts.

In the 1980s, Linda Gottlieb, an East Coast producer for MGM Studios, had lunch in New York City with writer Eleanor Bergstein, who had an idea for a movie about two sisters who are dancers, based in the Catskills.
“I said, ‘Well what’s the story?' And she said, ‘I don’t really have a story, but it should involve Latin dancing…’” Gottlieb recalled. “So I switched the subject and said, ‘Tell me about yourself.’ She said, ‘I grew up in Brooklyn, my father was a doctor, I was one of those kids who used to go across the tracks to go dirty dancing.’
“I said, ‘That’s a million-dollar title! Now we’ll figure out the story.’ We invented Johnny Castle at lunch.”

Actress Jennifer Grey was far from happy when she learned Patrick Swayze would be her love interest in cult movie Dirty Dancing because she hated working with the actor on a previous film.
Grey let it be known to producers that she had not enjoyed making Red Dawn with the movie hunk - and feared she and Swayze would not have the chemistry needed for the 1987 film.
