Carter Beats the Devil feels like is one of those books that is always talked about in the context of “Why isn’t this a movie yet?” The story starts off with the main character, a magician, who goes on the run after he’s accused of killing Warren G. Harding, and seems to go many places from there. Glen David Gould‘s novel sounds like it could make a pretty entertaining film, and Hollywood has tried to make it a movie, with Tom Cruise giving it a shot several years ago, before that fell through. Warner Bros. is next in line to try and bring it to theaters, with it apparently being “on the frontburner” for them.

Chicago – Yes, it is summer on cable: The season of soapy plotlines and unimaginative writing. Unfortunately, TNT’s new summer series “Rizzoli & Isles” falls prey to that. It’s based on the characters of best-selling author Tess Gerritsen, but is co-written and co-executive-produced by Janet Tamaro. And though Tamaro’s résumé includes one episode of “Lost,” it also includes the popular but campy “Bones” and the formulaic CSI franchise, “CSI: NY.”
TV Rating: 2.0/5.0
The problem with the writing in “Rizzoli & Isles” is its laziness. It falls back on several classic narrative formulas, including “The Odd Couple,” “Silence of the Lambs,” and “The Sopranos.”

Richard Sowada, head of film programs at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, has written about Screen Australia’s support for Australian delegates at last week’s Cannes film festival.
I understand there’s a robust discussion going on in Australia about the representation Screen Australia provides to filmmakers on the ground here in Cannes, sparked by David Gould’s piece in Encore.
Whilst David’s piece makes some good personal observations, what it actually does is open a wider discussion about people’s expectations of Cannes, how it works and how to make the most of it.
David seems to be getting it right under his own power which is great - and that’s what it takes to do the deals. However, I don’t think all of the observations are accurate in relation the context of Cannes and how Screen Australia or filmmakers can or should...
