I am by no means a film snob and like my movies in all shapes and sizes. I did my graduate research on Scorsese, and yet I host a B-movie podcast. The point is, every movie is different, and that's a good thing. Some carry important social messages, others are brimming with artistic merit, and sometimes movies are meant to be pure entertainment.
In 2019 Martin Scorsese took Marvel Studios to task in saying, "that's not cinema." His sentiment is nothing new. The art vs. spectacle debate has been happening since the silent era of film. Then, Erich von Stroheim made lengthy, plodding films that were layered in irony and rooted in realism. On the other end of the spectrum, Cecil B. DeMille produced fanciful movies that were more style than substance and made to grab larger audiences.
Not that I'd dare argue movies with Scorsese (so my humble apologies if...

Rian Johnson, like many directors, hated CG without really understanding it. But no more, thanks to "Looper"'s VFX supervisor, Karen Goulekas ("Green Lantern," "The Day After Tomorrow," "Spider-Man"). In fact, she made it her mission to turn Johnson into a convert. But then Goulekas had no choice: she needed A-list VFXers to create convincing work for the futuristic thriller about time traveling hit man Joseph Gordon-Levitt confronting his older self (Bruce Willis) in an existential showdown. "I kind of understand where Rian was coming from," Goulekas suggests, "because there's so much bad CG that gets done out there and that's the stuff you notice unless it's a really good, in your face, CG character. But when it's done seamlessly, you don't notice it. That's why it was so important to me that we got good vendors, obviously for my own personal craft, but also in support of Rian's...

We have been covering everything we can on The Green Lantern because its such an interesting project and a huge undertaking by the same studio that brought us Batman. Over last month we have gotten 3 major casting announcements (Blake Lively, Marc Strong and Peter Sarsgard) to follow the already known Ryan Reynolds who will be playing the title character.
Then we heard who director Martin Campbell will be bringing in to help with the production of this magnitude. Having read the script I can tell you how all the pieces are in place to make an Iron Man/Star Trek caliber style film. Released today is sort of the thought process that the filmmakers are taking to the look of some of the alien lanterns in the film. Keep in mind this is just a window into the process, the finished product may look completely different than what we get...

It seems like once a week we.ve been getting casting updates, story details have begun to slowly trickle down, and now, in a bit of behind the scenes news, Variety is reporting that Imageworks will be working their digital mastery on the film.s visual effects. On board are Karen Goulekas and Kent Houston, who put together The Day After...

Green Lantern, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s adaptation of one of DC’s most popular superheroes, has officially been given the green light.
Not that there was ever any doubt. Over the past few months, numerous reports about film locations and casting have circulated, but no news is ever quite as encouraging as a start date, which visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas posted about on her blog.
"'Green Lantern' got the official green light today," Goulekas reported. "And not a second too soon — only 10 weeks out from shooting!"
Filming of the superhero epic, which is set to star Ryan Reynolds as test pilot-turned-space cop Hal Jordan, will reportedly take place in New Orleans. The talent assembled by director Martin Campbell includes cinematographer Dian Beebe, who won an Oscar for Memoirs of a Geisha; Lord of the Rings’ production and costume designers Grant Major and Ngila Dickson, respectively...

Despite a gaping hole where there should be a full cast list, the Warner Bros superhero movie Green Lantern is to start filming in just ten weeks.
In terms of casting, we know only that Ryan Reynolds is playing the lead role of Hal Jordan, a pilot who becomes the eponymous hero when he inherits a mystical ring whose green energy can be manipulated into solid shapes.
News that director Martin Campbell will begin filming in New Orleans sometime in March came from the film's visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas.

Never in any serious doubt Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern adaptation, starring Mr. Scarlett Johnasson – Ryan Reynolds, was given the green light today, throwing yet another comic book movie into the ring.
This will be Warners and DC’s follow up to the Josh Brolin fronted Jonah Hex, due out sometime this year.
SuperheroHype broke the news today, reporting a post on visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas’s blog which is neatly succinct:
Wow! Been a long time since I posted! But today is a day worth posting about!

It's been 6 months since Ryan Reynolds was confirmed as the lead in The Green Lantern, and it's taken since then for the production to leave Australia, find a new home in New Orleans, and eventually track down a female lead. And now, after all that waiting, production is finally ready to begin! Superhero Hype! saw that visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas posted on her blog that the movie has been given the official green light, and shooting will start in 10 weeks, a.k.a. sometime in March. This is right in line with what we mentioned yesterday in the news about the Deadpool screenwriters-- basically Ryan Reynolds will be done shooting Green Lantern by the summer, and then in fighting shape to play the merc with a mouth. Now the really fun part of the Green Lantern production begins-- set photos! Can't wait to see Reynolds wearing the ring.

There wasn't any doubt that Warner Bros.' Green Lantern would be going forward, but the film now has an official greenlight, says visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas. "Green Lantern got the official green light today," Goulekas announced on her blog. "And not a second too soon - only 10 weeks out from shooting!" While plenty of work has been done on the film, the green light allows money to really flow out to the production, so Goulekas and her crew now have two and a half months to get things together for a film that may include up to 1300 effects shots. [via SuperHeroHype] Martin Campbell will direct Green Lantern, which stars Ryan Reynolds and is scheduled for release on June 17, 2011.

In brightest day, through blackest night, "Green Lantern" officially has the green light.

The visual effects committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has decided that Digital Domain is one of the effects houses that should be credited on The Day After Tomorrow, which is on the short list of seven films being considered for the best visual effects Oscar. Originally, 20th Century Fox had submitted Remo Balcells of the Orphanage in place of Digital Domain's Matthew Butler. But the committee decided that Butler should be credited along with visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas, practical effects supervisor Neil Corbould and Hydraulx's Greg Strause at the annual visual effects bakeoff Jan. 19.
