Exclusive: The Broadway-bound Ali musical, based on the life of three-time world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, will have its world premiere in the late sports superstar’s birthplace in Louisville, Kentucky in Fall 2024, Deadline can reveal.
Richard Willis, the show’s lead producer, told me that Ali will float “like a butterfly” into the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts for a three- or four-week run. An opening date hasn’t been set yet but it’s likely to be in October or early November next year.
Deadline broke the news about the musical in September last year.
Willis was speaking to Deadline in London where he was reuniting with Ali director and book writer Clint Dyer, who serves as deputy artistic director of London’s National Theatre, and composer Teddy Abrams, the music director and conductor of the Louisville Orchestra.

As Australia begins to face the reality of ‘living with Covid’, there is discussion among the screen sector about how safety protocols may evolve in the new climate to include measures such as vaccine mandates for cast and crew.
Last month, production on Russell Crowe’s Poker Face had to be temporarily shut down due to a confirmed case among the crew, a scenario not seen in Australia since Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic was halted during pre-production after Tom Hanks contracted the virus.
Back then, the New York Times described Hanks as the “public face of a pandemic’s widening reach”.
The case on Crowe’s set may not have had the same global impact, but it served as a potent reminder for the local production sector about the growing possibility of direct contact with the virus.

Ben Grant.
The hardest part about the coronavirus pandemic for Goalpost Pictures was having to make one employee redundant and stand down another staffer, who was subsequently reinstated thanks to the JobKeeper wage subsidy.
The only full-time crew member who had been hired for its upcoming Sbs miniseries New Gold Mountain was also stood down but is getting paid via JobKeeper.
On the upside, Goalpost is working with Sbs and Screen Australia on a number of scenarios for back-to-work on the Peter Cox-created drama set in Victoria during the 1850s gold rush from the perspective of desperate Chinese miners.
“It was a very confronting period and we were in survival mode, but making content is still a viable business,” Goalpost MD Ben Grant told Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner last Friday in a webinar.
“We will continue to develop and make content that firstly we want to make.

Rosemary Blight, Kylie du Fresne and Ben Grant.
Goalpost Pictures partners Rosemary Blight, Ben Grant and Kylie du Fresne are busily progressing projects in development with local and international partners and are confident the cinema business will rebound after the pandemic.
Here are their joint responses:
Q: While it was disappointing to have Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man’s cinema run curtailed while it was earning hefty sums here and in the Us and the UK, the early release on digital platforms at least meant it is reaching a sizable number of eyeballs?
A: Absolutely! Universal were very quick to respond to the worldwide pandemic scenario and, while obviously we would all have wanted cinemas to remain open and it was thrilling to see Leigh’s movie sitting so high in the box office charts, we are heartened to know that the film is widely available to everyone in isolation.

Felony director Matthew Saville is getting ready for the release of his new film.A Month of Sundays, starring Anthony Lapaglia and John Clarke as Adelaide real-estate agents.
The film will be released April 28 by Madman after festival runs at Tiff and Adelaide last year.
In between promotional duties, Saville is also looking ahead to what's next - even though, as he says, "I can't say what's next, because it's not really up to me".
"I'm developing a few projects but they're just really rough treatments and it's years before they're ready. The one that's furthest down the pipeline is an adaptation of a book by David Marr and Marian Wilkinson called Dark Victory, about the Tampa Crisis in 2001".

Candy director Neil Armfield will adapt gay memoir Holding The Man, one of five projects backed in Screen Australia’s latest funding round.
Screen Australia will invest in Holding The Man, an adaptation of a popular gay memoir from director Neil Armfield (Candy), and A Long Way Home, from Garth Davis, Jane Campion’s co-director on the series Top Of The Lake.
The government agency also decided this week to put finishing funds into Infini, a follow-up to debut film Gabriel for writer/director/producer Shane Abbess, and into two feature-length documentaries.
“It is ultimately a love story about gay soulmates and we haven’t seen much of that in cinema,” Holding The Man producer Kylie du Fresne (The Sapphires) told ScreenDaily. “We think it’s good timing because of the worldwide debate on gay marriage. It’s not what the film is about but it is part of why Tim (Conigrave) wrote his memoir.”

Over the next five years Australian producers will find it even harder to secure theatrical releases for their films around the world but films will be capable of reaching even more eyeballs via myriad digital platforms. That was the consensus view among the experts at the panel entitled My film is great, so why is no one interested?: Positioning your film for the marketplace, at the Screen Forever conference on Wednesday. Bec Smith, an agent at UTA Independent Film Group in Los Angeles, predicted theatrical deals for Australian films will be .more elusive. and a lot of content will migrate to digital platforms. Craig Emanuel, a partner at La-based entertainment law firm Loeb & Loeb, opined that in five years theatrical releases for independent films worldwide will be the exception rather than the rule. But he told the assembled producers that that if that happens it would not necessarily be...

Screen Australia says it has not mismanaged its finances by spending its annual production funding in just six months - a state of affairs which it says reflects the strength of the local film industry.
The government screen agency revealed in mid-December 2012 that it had spent its entire annual $42 million drama production allocation due to the unprecedented number of quality feature film and television projects seeking support. The shock announcement was reminiscent of the agency's abrupt decision to cut its investment cap in 2009 while several films were mid-financed. That decision.threw several major Australian productions into dissaray including The Tree and the biggest box office hit of.2010, Tomorrow When the War Began (Omnilab Media had to increase its investment at the last minute to ensure production).
Overspending on such a scale has never occurred before, even going back to the era of Screen Australia.s predecessor funding arm, the Film Finance Corporation.

When we enter the Beverly Wilshire suite where A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas star Tom Lennon is awaiting Movie Fanatic, he is brandishing a hand-sized water sprayer pointed right at me. With comics as talented as Lennon who handle deadpan like Michael Jordan worked a basketball, you never know -- is he serious about spraying me with it? Is this a joke? Could it be both?
Lennon stars in A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas as the new best friend of Harold (John Cho), who is estranged from his former best friend Kumar (Kal Penn) for several years.
Tom Lennon is widely known from his days on The State and Reno: 911, but what is not known too much about the man is he is a prolific screenwriter (Night at the Museum and its sequel, Vin Diesel’s The Pacifier, Balls of Fury).

During the FX executive session in front of TV critics, the cable network's president, Jon Landgraf, made two announcements:
-- 'Louie' is being picked up for a second season, to air around the same mid-summer timeframe when the first season was aired. Even after five weeks, Landgraf was very happy with the show's performance, citing audience growth via DVR of over 60 percent for last week's episode.
-- The network has picked up a new series from Ben Grant and Tom Lennon from 'Reno 911!' Called, 'USS Alabama,' this is a mostly-improvised show about a dimwitted crew on a space station. So think the dimwitted cops in Reno, translated to space. Yes, sounds pretty funny to me, too.
