On April 30th, Popsugar--which creates lifestyle content aimed at young women--took its turn in the Newfronts spotlight by pitching its upcoming programming to advertisers. As in previous years, Popsugar has enlisted an enticing group of partners who will work with the network to create content. Among others, YouTube star Ingrid Nilsen and comedy network Above Average both have their own shows within Popsugar’s slate.
Nilsen’s contribution to Popsugar’s programming push is a cooking show called Ingrid Dishes, on which the YouTube star best known for her beauty videos will share her favorite recipes. Above Average, for its part, will make its second contribution to Popsugar. Last year, it produced Seriously Distracted, a comedy about women who gossip in their workplace; in 2015, Seriously Distracted will return with a “new boss,” and Above Average will also deliver All My Friends Are Getting Married, which will star Mae Whitman (her?...

PopSugar Studios president David Grant says the brand's first series, comedy Seriously Distracted starring Amy Sedaris, had millions of views across its eight-episode first season, enough for the company to bring it back for a slightly retooled second season, which will feature a new character as the boss of the New York publicity firm at the center of the story. "The series exceeded our expectations," says Grant. "It

Entertainment and lifestyle news site PopSugar is delving into the world of web series. Seriously Distracted, the site’s first scripted comedy programming starring Amy Sedaris, debuts on October 21, 2014. Produced by Above Average (the network behind such comedy productions as Monkey Love and One Take Movies), Seriously Distracted tells the story of Sedaris’s New York-based publicity firm, LeGrand PR, whose employees just can’t seem to get past their obsession with pop culture in order to snag their biggest client yet. PopSugar Studios president David Grant told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview that “the show began to develop after [he] saw a video that the women of Above Average put together about how they reacted to the news of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's ‘conscious uncoupling.’” "We're always keeping our eyes out for things that we feel our audience will love," said Grant. "And Seriously Distracted felt right for our brand.

Starting its limited release in the Us earlier in the month, and arriving in the UK at the end of next week, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska has been one of the most talked-about films on the festival circuit this year.
Payne’s follow-up to The Descendants had its world premiere at Cannes in the spring – you can read our review here – and has been tipped to earn Bruce Dern a Best Actor nomination ever since.
Last week, Paramount released two new character featurettes for Dern and his on-screen wife, Kate Grant (June Squibb). And as promised, the studio has returned this week with the final profile for Dern’s on-screen son, David, played brilliantly by Will Forte.
After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a cantankerous father (Bruce Dern) thinks he’s struck it rich, and wrangles his son (Will Forte) into taking a road trip to claim the fortune.

Alexander Payne makes his anticipated return this year with Nebraska, the brilliant follow-up to last year’s Oscar-winning The Descendants.
Payne’s leading star this time around, Bruce Dern, has been abuzz with critical acclaim since the film’s Cannes debut – you can read our review here. And now Paramount has released two new character profiles for Dern and June Squibb, his on-screen wife, who stars opposite him as the rather feisty Kate Grant.
After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a cantankerous father (Bruce Dern) thinks he’s struck it rich, and wrangles his son (Will Forte) into taking a road trip to claim the fortune. Shot in black and white across four states, Nebraska tells the stories of family life in the heartland of America.
Will Forte’s performance as the duo’s son, David, is nothing short of brilliant, and certainly worthy of going to the Oscars alongside Dern.

Will Forte uses the word "lucky" a lot to describe himself, but the Saturday Night Live alum (2002-10) has spent this year proving his talent and versatility. The 43-year-old had small roles in two hit comedies in 2013 (Grown Ups 2 and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2), but his most buzzed-about performance is his surprising dramatic turn in a little black-and-white movie, Alexander Payne's Nebraska. He plays David Grant, a frustrated middle-aged man who, hoping to bond with his cranky dad, Woody (Bruce Dern), agrees to drive the...

Already being eyed as a serious Academy Awards contender for his performance in the Alexander Payne film, Bruce Dern stars in Nebraska as Woody Grant, a 75-year-old father determined to make the trek from Montana to Nebraska to claim a sweepstakes prize that he believes will make him rich. Although he knows his father is deluding himself, David Grant (Will Forte), Woody's son, reluctantly accompanies his dad on the trip. In the below interview with ComingSoon.net, Dern discusses the ten-year road to making Nebraska a reality and, not unlike his on-screen character, reflects a bit on his life as a whole and explains how he believes that the new film is a honest look at a uniquely American way of life. Alexander Payne has become one of those figures who isn’t just a film director — he’s a genre. As much as I love Election, his 1999 breakthrough film, the Payne movie that really kicked off the Payne format was About Schmidt (2002). The leisurely, semi-planted version of the road-trip structure; the classically framed images of a falling-down American middle class that Hollywood is no longer in touch with and no longer knows how to show us; the earnest, damaged heroes with their family ties and family demons; the arcs that are built not out of screenwriting-class “story points” but, rather, out...

My Damn Channel isn't the only online video network that's going live. A new endeavor on Popsugar will bring the celebrity news and gossip site to viewers in a live streamed daily format. The show is called Popsugar Live, and it continues the website's plan to engage all young adult and middle-aged women on the planet. For progressive action on mitigating water risks to become the norm, creating a strong foundation of understanding is crucial, says David Grant
• Take part in a live online discussion around the next steps in tackling water, energy and food challenge this Thursday, 2-4pm
Friday saw the end of the 2012 World Water Week in Stockholm which, as always, provided a platform for exchanging ideas, debating new concepts and providing the opportunity for like-minded organisations to creatively collaborate. Some of the standout themes that emerged over the week were the water-food-energy nexus, partnerships, tools and data.
The nexus is not a new concept and is something that has been under discussion for some time, particularly since the 2011 Bonn Nexus Conference. The key difference in this year's discussions, however, was the progression of the issue from a broad theoretical concept to actually seeing practical examples of how it is being both experienced and addressed on the ground.

Best-selling author of techno-thrillers whose 1977 blockbuster was made into a film
Craig Thomas, who has died from pneumonia aged 68, was at the forefront of the spy/adventure genre known as the techno-thriller, novels in which technology – usually cutting-edge military hardware extrapolated from current technological advances – is central to the plot. Thomas's 1977 novel Firefox featured the fictional MiG-31, an aircraft so advanced that it would immediately give the Russians the upper hand.
At the time, the Russians had the MiG-25 Foxbat, the fastest reconnaissance bomber and interceptor in the air, with a top speed of Mach 2.8. Thomas's Firefox could achieve speeds of Mach 5, had stealth technology which made it invisible to radar and a guided missile system controlled by the pilot by thought alone. Realising the implications to security in the west, his British spymaster Kenneth Aubrey suggests an audacious plan to steal one of the two prototype aircraft.

Perhaps the whole midwest Cedar Rapids experience (as a producer) and the completion of The Descendants which in some circles is being mentioned as a Cannes title (we don't see it on the Croisette) got Alexander Payne homesick and ready for work. Last month, ThePlaylist broke the news that this long-gestating Nebraska which was set up at Focus Features back in 2003 was on the top of Payne's wish list and now it appears that the first stone has been cast (via The Tracking Board) with the lead role going to funny-man Paul Rudd (My Idiot Brother). The trade mentions that Payne will direct from a script written by himself, Phil Johnston, Jim Taylor and Bob Nelson. Bona Fide Productions’ Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa will produce with Julie Thompson executive producing. Gist: David Grant agrees to drive his aging alcoholic father from Montana to Nebraska to cash a sweepstakes winning lotto ticket,...

Okay, so here’s a quick question for you all … how many dog owners amongst you have suddenly experienced man’s best friend exhibit unusually disturbing behavioural tics after sitting them down in front of the television and watching a few horror movies together?
Anyone? No? No sudden canine savagery? No impulsive howling at the moon? No gratuitous tearing of flesh? No violent rending of bone? Not even any unwelcome soiling of carpets?
I only ask this question as, in regards to the Video Nasties furore of the mid-Eighties, Conservative MP Graham Bright once (in)famously appeared on television and categorically stated that “I believe there is research taking place and it will show that these films not only affect young people … but I believe they affect dogs as well.”

This is the fourth film review in the coverage of Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival. In our life, we have the opportunity to see many films on abduction. Hopefully, Dominique Adams's Twisted Seduction is a proof that the genre of abduction thrillers knows how to renew itself while sticking to its chief mission: entertain us.

Sequoia Capital announced yesterday that it will give a third round of cash to a quick-growing media network, Sugar Inc., bringing the Valley-based company's total Vc purse to $31 million. Sugar also announced that it would hire the former head of Fox TV to run one of its new businesses. So exactly what does the company do?
If you don't know, you might be male. Sugar is well-capitalized, brightly-staffed, and very much oriented towards women. Its flagship site is PopSugar, a celebrity gossip site. Other parts of the variegated brand include FabSugar, a fashion site, YumSugar for cooking, FitSugar for exercise, and, well, you get the idea. And, according to Quantcast, the company's properties receive over 8 million monthly unique visitors and more than 50 million page views. Compared with the Huffington Post's 13 million monthly unique visitors and $37M total funding, the math for Sugar looks just about right.

If you think that original web programming is just for directors and actors trying to make it in Hollywoodland, remember it's anyone's game. Shopflick has launched its first series, The Hall Of Style with Davida Hall. Perhaps this interactive shopping is a more ideal way to monetize your web series. Shopflick, which feels like a more hip online take on QVC, calls its site an "entertaining shopping experience on the web for indie-inspired goods." With each product you can watch videos of the designers, click on multiple photos and read feedback and comments from other users. The site offers high-end fashion to rising trends. I would never consider myself the Carrie Bradshaw type, but after watching the introductory episode Hot High Heals I wanted to immediately max out my credit card (break those 2009 goals) and start shopping (snipers take her out!). It was fun (gasp!) to look at the items...
