CinemaBlind’s Review – 70%
F. Gary Gray‘s latest Netflix heist film is coming tomorrow and for the people who are excited about film Lift, CinemaBlind is here to watch and judge the upcoming film in advance for you. Starring Kevin Hart in the leading role, the film revolves around a group of master thieves whom Interpol catches at the beginning of the film, but they are offered full immunity and in turn, they will have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist.
Lift is another one of Netflix’s blockbuster cinema like what they tried to do with Ryan Reynolds‘ 6 Underground and Red Notice, but the good thing here is that it is better than both of those films but it is also nowhere near the great heist film like Ocean’s Eleven or Gary Gray’s own The Italian Job.

Netflix’s big-budget action film from Fast & Furious’s F Gary Gray pairs slick sequences with Hart’s unconvincing art thief
You know the Netflix formula: take a reliable box office trope – the big-budget action movie, the international spy thriller, the hitman and car chase bonanza – repackage it for the laptop screen with evermore disposable wrapping, attach a big name star with a hefty paycheck, release, move on. Such results – Sweet Girl, The Adam Project, The Gray Man, just to name a few – are often widely viewed yet under-discussed, throwaway blockbusters in the house style without much staying power or distinguishable flair.
So there are well-worn and reduced expectations going into Lift, the latest collaboration between Netflix, the comedian Kevin Hart and a tried and true concept. The film does little to outrun them. You know from the first minute, in which Hart’s debonair conman Cyrus Whitaker strolls...

For some time now, F. Gary Grey and his Fast 8 family have been looking to write a page in the record books, as the film aimed to be the first American production to shoot in Cuba. Tonight those wishes have come true, and Grey has confirmed through the Tweet below that Dominic Toretto and his crew are heading to the tropics. Welcome to Cuba - #F8 is now in production!https://t.co/0aneIVMhJm. Fast & Furious (@FastFurious) April 28, 2016 The announcement comes from the official Fast and Furious Twitter account, which saw the video of local extras bidding a fond hello to the Fast 8 team. This isn't the only claim to fame Fast 8 has to its name, as its previous production period in Iceland saw the seventh Fast and Furious sequel triggering the largest explosion on film in the European nation. With Cuba now on the books as a shooting location,...

They took their time and had the case moved to federal court but today Universal, Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Grey, Legendary Pictures Funding, Dr Dre, Ice Cube and more dropped the mic on former N.W.A manager Gerald Heller's defamation, misappropriation of likeness and copyright infringement lawsuit. With two separate filings Wednesday claiming First Amendment and anti-slapp protection, the defendants call Heller's first amended complaint of last month "a…...

Fast 8 won't be revving its engines in theaters until next summer, which means there's plenty of time to pop open the hood and retool Universal's franchise before taking it out for another spin. One key component, the film's villain, looks to be undergoing a massive overhaul, as it looks like Dominic Toretto and his crew will be facing down a female antagonist. While we previously thought Jason Statham's Fast 7 baddie Deckard Shaw would be returning, it appears that early word surrounding F. Gary Grey's sequel would be pegging a "lone female" as the cause of the Fast 8 team's woes. Even more exciting is the fact that Deadline mentioned a candidate the studio has in mind for the role, and it's none other than Academy Award winner / road goddess Charlize Theron, who had previously collaborated with Grey in 2003's The Italian Job. We'll let you settle down...

'The Merry Widow' with Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald and Minna Gombell under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch. Ernst Lubitsch movies: 'The Merry Widow,' 'Ninotchka' (See previous post: “Ernst Lubitsch Best Films: Passé Subtle 'Touch' in Age of Sledgehammer Filmmaking.”) Initially a project for Ramon Novarro – who for quite some time aspired to become an opera singer and who had a pleasant singing voice – The Merry Widow ultimately starred Maurice Chevalier, the hammiest film performer this side of Bob Hope, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler – the list goes on and on. Generally speaking, “hammy” isn't my idea of effective film acting. For that reason, I usually find Chevalier a major handicap to his movies, especially during the early talkie era; he upsets their dramatic (or comedic) balance much like Jack Nicholson in Martin Scorsese's The Departed or Jerry Lewis in anything (excepting Scorsese's The King of Comedy...

Ingrid Bergman ca. early 1940s. Ingrid Bergman movies on TCM: From the artificial 'Gaslight' to the magisterial 'Autumn Sonata' Two days ago, Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” series highlighted the film career of Greta Garbo. Today, Aug. 28, '15, TCM is focusing on another Swedish actress, three-time Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman, who would have turned 100 years old tomorrow. TCM has likely aired most of Bergman's Hollywood films, and at least some of her early Swedish work. As a result, today's only premiere is Fielder Cook's little-seen and little-remembered From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (1973), about two bored kids (Sally Prager, Johnny Doran) who run away from home and end up at New York City's Metropolitan Museum. Obviously, this is no A Night at the Museum – and that's a major plus. Bergman plays an elderly art lover who takes an interest in them; her...

Update, 10:05 Am: The L.A. County District Attorney’s office asked for a high bail because of concerns about flight risk and more in the fatality connected to the F. Gary Grey-directed N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, and today Judge Ronald S. Cohen granted it. Marion "Suge" Knight’s bail is now a very hefty $25 million for his involvement with two men being run over near a movie-related photo shoot in late January. Already out on bail for another case, the former…...

So, writer-director Gary Ross, having helped make "The Hunger Games" into a gigantic hit, has decided to move on to new pastures. As we reported last week, Ross will be focusing on a new project, and after a few days, Lionsgate officially confirmed (admitted) he will not be helming "Catching Fire," with both the studio and the director issuing formal statements.
Which leaves Lionsgate needing to find someone to replace him, and find someone soon. They have a script from "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy, a release date of November 22, 2013, and a scheduling window they need to hit before Jennifer Lawrence has to move on to shooting the "X-Men: First Class" sequel. With all that in mind, we've picked out five names who we think would be good candidates to fill the hole left by Ross on "Catching Fire." Bear in mind, given the studio won't likely be spending big cash on a new helmer,...

HollywoodNews.com: The Playlist doesn’t break news all that often, merely seeing fit to be a one-stop shop for the movie news that everyone else breaks during the day (I don’t mean that as an insult, The Playlist is the site I go to if I only have time to surf one movie news site in a given day), So it’s somewhat of a big deal that The Playlist has broken a pretty major story, confirming that director Gary Ross will not be back to helm the second and/or third films in the Hunger Games franchise. There have been rumblings all week about contract negotiations, and Ross has now politely passed. The site chalks it up to both Ross’s lack of desire to stay in the same universe for the next several years combined with a somewhat low-ball offer from Lionsgate. Whatever the case, Ross...

For art and entertainment, 'making of' films can rival the movies they document, says Mark Kermode
Every now and then, a documentary about the making of a film rivals its subject for both art and entertainment. Take Les Blank's extraordinary Burden of Dreams which, arguably, documents obsession and the search for "ecstatic truth" as effectively as Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo. "I live by this movie, I die by this movie!" declares Herzog with a conviction which would shame Klaus Kinski's titular madman and which Blank backs up with breathtakingly confrontational on-set footage.
Or what about Hearts of Darkness, in which Martin Sheen suffers a heart attack and Francis Ford Coppola mutates into a modern-day Colonel Kurtz while filming Apocalypse Now? "My movie is not about Vietnam, my movie is Vietnam!" says Coppola with Brandoesque bravado, before admitting: "We had too much equipment, too much money and little by little we went insane.
