George Winston, a Grammy-winning pianist known for his new-age, soothing instrumentals, died Sunday following a 10-year battle with cancer, according to a statement on his website released Tuesday. He was 73.
“George quietly and painlessly left this world while asleep,” the statement read.
Winston had been dealing with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a cancer for which he had a bone marrow transplant a decade ago that prolonged his life. He was forced to postpone his 2023 tour due to his health issues, but aimed to return to the tour next year.
Winston won the Grammy for Best New Age Album in 1996 for his seventh studio album, “Forest.” He was nominated four other times across his career for Best New Age Album, Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Recording for Children. His 16 albums, spanning more than 50 years, sold a combined 15 million copies. His final album, “Night,” was released by RCA Records in May 2022.

“Happiness is a Warm Gun” isn’t the only connection between The Beatles and Peanuts. Both groups exemplified the optimism of the 1960s era. Charles M. Schulz’s Charlie Brown was so assured of positive outcomes he repeatedly tried to kick a field-goal-placed football held by the town’s resident five-cents-a-session psychiatrist, Lucy, in spite of the knowledge she would pull it out from under him at the last moment. He faced defeat and realized “the world didn’t come to an end.”
When Schulz’s comic strip moved into animated TV specials, much of that expectant wonder was expressed through the music. Jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi joined the Peanuts’ creative gang in 1964, when he was hired to score a TV documentary about Schulz, A Boy Named Charlie Brown. The documentary never aired, but jazz label Fantasy Records released the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s soundtrack, Jazz Impressions of A Boy...

The Score of ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ Was Lost — Now It’s Found, and Better Than Ever
Halloween has a soundtrack. It’s the shrieks, howls, and moans of a spooky sounds cassette. It’s the novelty songs from the era of late, late shows mingling with more straight-faced pop that dips a toe into the macabre and the supernatural. It’s the instrumentals that set the tone for the hauntings, possessions, and/or slashings of a favorite horror movie.
Yet, for decades, this seasonal backdrop was incomplete. The Halloween canon lacked one of its most vital recordings, its esprit de fall confined to annual television airings, home video releases, and one hard to find read-along storybook and record. You couldn’t add it to a costume party mixtape, couldn’t load it onto a playlist for a drive to the pumpkin patch. Which is a shame, because unlike so many of the pop hits retroactively adopted as Halloween standards, jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi’s score for...

The 1966 animated television special It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown has become a perennial Halloween standard. Starring the Peanuts gang created by Charles M. Schulz, it is not, however, a horror classic. “It’s not even on the scale,” says film analyst and Peanuts historian Derrick Bang. “It’s too sweet and gentle. The only thing mildly spooky is the title credit sequence.” What the special lacked in fear it made up for in wonder. Much of that magic came from the music.
While Lucy, Linus, and even Snoopy come home with sacks of candy, Charlie Brown’s trick or treat bag is filled with rocks. That’s not how Halloween is supposed to roll. Lee Mendelson, co-creator of the Peanuts animated specials, brought in someone who could make it swing.

Adele‘s “30” has been dominant on the Billboard 200 albums chart since it was released in November, and no amount of holiday season music has been able to dislodge it from number-one. In the tracking week that ended December 23, it not only remained on top for a fifth straight week, it actually improved its sales performance from week to week. More on this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
“30” leads the way with 212,000 equivalent album units, which are calculated by combining album sales, track sales, and online streams. That’s actually the album’s best performance since its second week on the chart. Her streams were down 14%, but that was more than offset by album sales increasing by 23%. So while “30” isn’t a Christmas album, it seems to be benefiting from holiday season purchases. God help other artists if she ever did release an actual Christmas album.

Taylor Swift’s Evermore debuted at Number One on the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart, marking her second album to top the chart this year. Evermore amassed more than 154,000 sales and over 189 million streams, adding up to more than twice as many album-equivalent-units as the competition. As that set coasted to Number One, its predecessor Folklore also continued to thrive, enjoying more than 60,000 sales and close to 34 million streams. Swift had two of the three most popular albums in the country.

Shawn Mendes’ Wonder debuted at Number One in a Christmas-crazed week on the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart. Mendes’ fourth full-length — and first since 2018 — wasn’t a huge streaming hit (41.7 million streams), but it earned more than 52,000 sales, allowing it to coast to Number One. Taylor Swift’s Folklore wasn’t far behind, taking second with 95,300 units.
Wonder was one of the few new sets to debut on the top half of the Rs 200. Who cares about new music with Christmas around the corner? Holiday albums continued to own the chart.

2020 has been a brutal and depressing year, with a raging pandemic affecting every corner of the globe and massive civil unrest arising in righteous response to long-ignored systemic inequities stateside. It makes sense, then, that film fans have opted to prioritize comedy in their home video streaming, away from the tragedy that is real life.
Per Owen Harris at JustWatch, it appears that comedy has been, by far, the most popular genre across the globe. Based on data gathered for 60 countries collated from July through September, comedy films and TV shows rank at the top in popularity among 28 countries — especially in Europe and North America.
Action films rank second in genre popularity, topping streams across 17 countries tracked. Romance and Animation are the preferred genres in Southeast Asian countries for the same time period.

Based on this information, I asked Owen if he might mind doing a bit more digging for me.

Andrew Bird has released a new song, “Christmas in April,” which he wrote back at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic as he imagined what the holiday season might look like during quarantine. The track will appear on Bird’s new holiday album, Hark!, out Friday, October 30th via Loma Vista.
“Christmas in April” is a bittersweet acoustic tune, and while it boasts a charming self-referential quality, it doesn’t lay on the particulars of the pandemic too thick, allowing the song to sit more in the rich tradition of lonely holiday tunes.

Lee Mendelson, the prolific Emmy-winning producer of more than 50 animated Peanuts TV specials, including A Charlie Brown Christmas, has died. He was 86.
Mendelson died on Christmas Day in Hillsborough, California, following a protracted battle with lung cancer, his family told the Palo Alto Daily Post.
Mendelson imported comic strip characters Cathy and Garfield to television success but his signature career moment came in December 1965 when he brought Charles Schulz’s legendary Peanuts characters to the small screen in A Charlie Brown Christmas. The half-hour animated special with the $96,000 budget aired originally on CBS and would become a beloved touchstone of the holiday season, yield a bestselling jazz album, and win the Emmy and Peabody awards.
Mendelson also wrote the lyrics to the 1965 special’s ethereal Christmas Time Is Here, with music composed by Vince Guaraldi and performed by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

Pixar has explored mortality in films like “Toy Story 4” and the afterlife in “Coco,” but their latest film “Soul” is an existential journey about what our spirits would do if they were separated from our bodies.
The first teaser trailer for “Soul” features Jamie Foxx as an aspiring jazz musician in New York City who suffers an accident and finds his soul drifting through an ethereal plane, asking the big questions in life.
“So what do you want to be remembered for,” Foxx’s little blue ball of a soul asks another voiced by Tina Fey. “Probably for … doing this funny cowboy dance?”
Pete Docter, the director of “Up,” “Monster’s Inc.,” and “Inside Out,” directs Pixar’s “Soul,” the second film intended to be released by the animation studio in 2020, with “Onward” arriving in March of next year. Back when people actually bought albums, Christmas releases were reliable money-makers for popular acts: cheap to put together, with demand baked in by the season. The limited repertoire — Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” aside, great, or even simply popular, original Christmas songs are a rarity in the past four decades — and seasonally appropriate level of sentiment meant these albums were a scourge for some listeners. But for fans of the genre, they were a source of comfort, and for those in the music industry, a rare easy win.

The Peanuts theme song Linus and Lucy has a pretty simple origin. It was introduced on a jazz album composed by Vince Guaraldi in 1964. The name of the album was Jazz Impressions of a Named Charlie Brown. The next year the song would be used for A Charlie Brown Christmas and as such introduced to the world yet again. It’s a fun song and one that is easily recognizable even to people that have never watched Peanuts. That’s just how pervasive the song is in American culture really since it’s been heard just about everywhere. The song has become

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

“Batman” (1966) spent the better part of the past 50 years as the candy-colored punching bag for the “Biff!”s and “Pow!”s of those aiming to “protect” the character’s integrity — which is to say fans whose sole perception of the Caped Crusader is a tortured loner threatening the criminals of Gotham City through clenched teeth. After an impressive career, jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi was hired to score A Charlie Brown Christmas, followed by seventeen other Peanuts television specials, until his untimely death in 1976. Can you even imagine those animated features with any other soundtrack Guaraldi and his trio gave sophisticated heart and depth to what could have been just another forgettable cartoon score. At least one night every Christmas season, I walk the cold sidewalks of New York City, headphones on, and Guaraldi playing. I can be the star of my own movieenjoying my own slightly melancholy, wistful scene while I reminisce about another year spent in the city I adore.

Whether or not you are familiar with Clark Gesner's musical you're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, you are bound to recognize Track 21 of the York Theatre Company 2016 Off-Broadway Cast Recording. The theme 'Linus and Lucy,' written by Vince Guaraldi, is a familiar tune to all who have seen the well-known animated specials featuring the Peanuts kids. There is something oddly soothing about this gentle, understated theme, with its rolling feeling of continuity paired with plinking notes of whimsy, that has become so closely associated with Charles M. Schulz's legacy of 17,897 comic strips. The you're A Good Man, Charlie Brown band played 'Linus and Lucy' as walking-out music after the show, prompting much of the audience to stay and hear it through to the end.

While Drew Barrymore admits she’ll never be the kind of master-crafter who can make a bird house of Popsicle sticks, she adores putting together personalized gifts — that’s why she encourages her daughters, Olive, 4, and Frankie, 2, to do so, as well.
“Instead of buying them toys, because I’m obviously cautious and don’t want to spoil them, I buy them lots of arts and crafts. They’re more inclined to share, it’s more communal, they make stuff,” she tells People Home. “And I think it’s very perspective-appropriate, because they’re making things. A made thing is the best gift always.

Do not call Drew Barrymore a lifestyle guru.
While the actress, 41, is already preparing for the holidays, she doesn’t consider herself artsy, per se. “I would not know where to glaze a dog bowl,” she tells People when talking about crafting with daughters Olive, 4, and Frankie, 2½. “They’re much craftier than I am.”
The actress already has “groovy hipster” Christmas stockings picked out for the family from her new holiday line with Shutterfly – “me and the girls and Will will definitely have them” – and is looking forward to partaking in her favorite activities. “We’ll do the goofy Snoopy...

After the smashing success of President Obama's summer sex playlist, the White House is releasing not one, but two dueling holiday playlists — one from the Obamas and the other from the Bidens. Which to choose? It's a battle between rock and soul. The Bidens go with a lot of classic rock, kicking off their playlist with Bruce Springsteen's "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (the Boss also sings "Merry Christmas Baby") and closing out with Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime." There's some more contemporary stuff in there like Coldplay's "A Sky Full of Stars" and Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett's "Cheek to Cheek," but this is the playlist you might hear at your aunt's Christmas party. The Obama playlist is, let's say, for more intimate times. It begins with jazz, a Vince Guaraldi arrangement of "O Tannenbaum," before hitting R&B classics like "Let It Snow" by...

It's that time of year again, the time when you rewatch holiday classic A Charlie Brown Christmas and find yourself wondering if any of the other 44 Peanuts specials are worth your time. That's not a hypothetical figure, by the way: While several of the Charles Schulz–scripted and post-Schulz-era specials complain about the evils of consumerism, there are (to date) 45 Peanuts specials. Many of these short, frequently seasonal programs follow formulas established in the early specials, several of which were directed by Bill Melendez and scored by the inimitable Vince Guaraldi. But even some of the more recent shorts, like Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown, are fun, and all of them are available online (even the ones that have only been officially released on VHS tape, like Snoopy: The Musical). Still, while many Peanuts specials lack the early shorts' zeal for childlike play, certainly some are worth watching (or rewatching...

50 years ago today, a beloved Christmas tradition began: Families first gathered in their living rooms to watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas” when it premiered on December 9, 1965. A half-century later, the animated TV special is still remembered for the unbeatable dance moves on display by Charles Schulz’ characters, Vince Guaraldi’s widely recognizable jazz score, the now-iconic image of Charlie Brown’s sad little Christmas tree, and the sweet story about Charlie Brown attempting to direct the gang’s play and learning the true meaning of Christmas. ABC will celebrated the big anniversary with the retrospective “It’s Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown!” hosted by Kristen Bell. The retrospective aired at the end of November and will air again on the network on Thursday, December 24 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt. Other notable December 9 happenings in pop culture history: • 1962: The debut studio album of The Supremes, “Meet the Supremes,” was released.

The Peanuts Movie
Written by Bryan Schulz, Craig Schulz & Cornelius Uliano
Directed by Steve Martino
USA, 2015
The Peanuts Movie is like a warm blanket of nostalgia stitched together with modern technology. Crisp, beautiful animation highlights director Steve Martino’s ode to perseverance. Creator Charles M. Schulz would have praised the earnest purity of his classic characters, assuming the $100 million price tag didn’t render him speechless. The Peanuts Movie will enchant younger audiences with its spirit of adventure, while offering adults a welcome respite from irony and ugliness. Maybe Linus was onto something, because this security blanket never felt so good.
Charlie Brown (voiced by Noah Schnapp) may be a good man, but he can’t seem to catch a break. The local trees are littered with his failed attempts at kite flying (sometimes in the middle of winter), he has a standing therapy appointment at Lucy’s lemonade stand...

It’s not the great reboot, Charlie Brown!
Just over a month into the 65th anniversary of the Peanuts comic strip, Charlie Brown and his pet beagle have returned in a new, syrupy sweet, 3D animated adventure. The Peanuts Movie features the reliable forlorn Charlie Brown suddenly lovestruck by the arrival of a new girl in school, while Snoopy daydreams about flying against the Red Baron and winning the heart of a poofy, pink puppy named Fifi (whose wordless squeaks are voiced by Kristin Chenoweth, for a reason, we assume).
Coming out over 15 years removed from Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz’s death and the end of his iconic comic strip, The Peanuts Movie feels like a relic from a bygone era of languid kids entertainment. Co-writers Craig Schulz (Charles’ son), Bryan Schulz (Charles’ grandson), and Cornelius Uliano (no known relation) retain the wholesome, Americana appeal of the original comics and cartoons – talent shows,...

Lucinda Williams Talks About Her New Album, Adapting Her Dad's Poem and Her Favorite Christmas Music
Ever since her Grammy-winning fifth album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, introduced her to mainstream audiences in 1988, Lucinda Williams has been at the top of the nebulously-defined genre of "alt-country." Her instantly-recognizable voice and unique interpretation of country, blues and folk traditions have made her an indispensable part of the scene: If you didn't recognize her forlorn "Are You Alright?" in one of the key scenes of True Detective's first season, you probably cocked your head and said, "Who is that?" anyway. The first official trailer for Peanuts is here, and it is predictably adorable, precious and sweetly nostalgic. CGI Snoopy looks like he's off on a Parisian adventure while Charlie Brown is getting into trouble with popcorn. Vince Guaraldi's jazzy theme song plays in the background — although interrupted by Fitz and the Tantrums for part of it — just to get everyone further in the mood for a trip down memory lane with the beloved comic-strip characters. Such are the times we live in. "Peanuts" is coming to the big screen for a whole new generation of kids to fall in love with, and then buy officially licensed products, which means that for old codgers like me, Charlie Brown will never be the same. The hand drawn animation of yore is now replaced with 3D CGI and Vince Guaraldi. 20th Century Fox, what have you done.... While the new trailer for "Peanuts" opens with with pianist's familiar "Linus and Lucy," someone decided that song is now passé. And so the trailer quickly changes to a more contemporary replacement: "What I Like About You" by Flo Rida featuring Fitz. We weep for the youth of today.
