The Last Wagon is a Mexican movie directed by Ernesto Contreras and starring Adriana Barraza and Guillermo Villegas.
This movie is all about education and the importance of being a dedicated teacher. It’s the kind of film that has a strong message to teach us and inspire us to learn. If you’re someone who enjoys learning life lessons and exploring themes of compassion, fairness, and the goodness of people, then you’ll definitely want to check this movie out.
About the film
This film is technically well-made, but it doesn’t focus on displaying its technical virtues. Instead, it aims to teach us about life and evoke a range of emotions. It pays tribute to teachers and uses melodrama to achieve its goals.
Although this may not appeal to everyone, the film has a good screenplay and takes us on an interesting journey of discovery. The attention to...

Alex Cox attacks the Reagan years with a political tale sung in the key of the Italo Spaghetti Western: expect plenty of slow motion shots of stylish pistolero mercenaries fighting for the historical ‘filibuster’ William Walker. Look him up, he’s the patron saint of every neocon and would-be soldier of fortune. Everybody on this show goes the whole 9 yards in commitment, with Ed Harris in the lead — they filmed in Nicaragua. It may be director Cox’s finest film, packed with vivid images and surreal anachronisms — and a terrific music score by Joe Strummer.

Winners have been announced! See below.
The First Edition of the Platinum Awards, a gala presentation in Panama April 5th, sponsored by Egeda and Fipca was an idea born two years ago in Panama at the Festival'sl Forum with Iberoamerican filmmakers and the Iberoamerican Producers Association (Fipca). Panama's Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce offered to pay for the first edition which is being held now. Jose Pacheco, the Deputy Minister and also the President of the Panama Film Commission, along with Arianne Marie Benedetti, then had to convince their government that the investment in the awards, along with the investment in cinema would further the country's extraordinary influx of capital and would help establish the Premios Platinos as the most important global event promoting and supporting the Iberoamerican film industry. Everyone here for the 4th Annual Panama Film Festival was quite excited and it was an extraordinary affair. Twenty-two Spanish speaking countries in the Americas as well as Brazil, Portugal and Spain gathered along with world press (John Hopewell of Variety and I myself of SydneysBuzz/ LatinoBuzz and Indiewire were the only gringo press around) and producers, directors, actors, cinematographers and writers to pay homage to the great talent arising out of the Iberoamerican countries whose potential audience exceeds that of the United States.
This was pointed out with great enthusiasm by Javier Camára, the actor nominated for Best Male Actor for his role in David Trueba's Living is Easy with Eyes Closed (Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados). He plays a high-school English/ Latin teacher in 1966 Spain who drives to Almeria in hopes of meeting his hero, John Lennon. Along the way, he picks up two runaways. The movie title, Living is Easy With Eyes Closed, comes from a line in Lennon's song Strawberry Fields Forever which he wrote while filming How I Won the War in Almeria. (Camára is also a fan of Real Madrid.)
In this first edition 701 films have participated. Of these, each of the countries made a pre-selection of their candidates through their representatives Fipca and national film academies. Subsequently, a jury of prominent industry professionals has selected the winners just announced at the gala on April 5 in Panama. The Directors of the event are Adrian Solar Lozier for Fipca and one of Chili's most recognized producers and Enrique Cerezo Torres, one of the founders of Egeda twenty-five years ago, its chief executive for the past seventeen years, President of the Madrid Film Commission and President of the Madrid School of Cinema. (He is also the President of the Athletic Football Club of Madrid.)
Mexican singer and actress, Alessandra Rosaldo, and Colombian journalist Juan Carlos Arciniegas whose TV show on film is featured on CNN Latino, co-hosted the televised event. Canal Plus of Spain and others representing television across the Americas were present.
The winners in each of the eight categories were named to a huge audience of the most important Latin American cinema talent who sat on pins and needles waiting to hear the winners.
Accepting the Platinum Award of Honor, Sonia Braga, known to U.S. audiences from the 1976 breakout Brazilian film, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, and again in 1985 and 1988 with Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Milagro Beanfield War respectively, was elegant and eloquent in her acceptance.
The most nominated films were The German Doctor: Wakolda, Gloria and Living is Easy with Eyes Closed. The surprise was that Living is Easy did not win a single award. Already the winner of 11 Awards and nominated for 5 other awards, David Trueba definitely can not hide behind the loser category. The Spanish film Living is Easy with Eyes Closed won six Goya Awards including Best Director.
And The Winners are:
Best Iberoamerican Fiction Film: Gloria (Chile). Nominated were The German Doctor: Wakolda (Argentina), Heli (Mexico), Witching and Bitching (Spain), La jaula de oro (The Golden Cage) (Mexico), Roa (Colombia) and Living is Easy with Eyes Closed Spain) compete for the title of Best Latin American Film of the Year.
Best Female Performance: Paulina García (Gloria). Nominated were Karen Martínez (The Golden Cage), Laura De la Uz (Ana's Film), Marian Álvarez (Wounded), Nashla Bogaert (Who's the Boss?), Natalia Oreiro (Wakolda). You can read Gloria's review and interview with Sebastian Lelio and Paulna Garcia here: Review by Carlos Aguilar and Interview with Sebastian Lelio and Paulina Garcia by Sydney Levine. You can soon read more about upcoming Dominican Republic's Nashla Bogaert whom I met and interviewed in Panama. She is my choice of the one to keep an eye on.
Best Male Performance: Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included). The equivalent of the Platinos, our own Academy Award usually steers clear of comedy in the best actor category, as if comedy were not as difficult as drama. But this was well deserved in terms of popularity as this film's huge success in both U.S. and Mexico shows. U.S.$44 million in U.S. and U.S.$ 41 million in Mexico are not to be ignored. This major hit hit a major nerve in U.S. and Mexico. Also nominated were Antonio de la Torre (Cannibal), , Javier Cámara (Living is Easy with Eyes Closed), Ricardo Darín (Thesis on a Homicide) and Víctor Prada (The Cleaner).
Platinum Award For Best Director: Amat Escalante (Heli). Nominated were Sebastian Lelio (Gloria), David Trueba (Living Is Easy With Eyes Closed), Lucia Puenzo (The German Doctor: Wakolda). You can read Heli's Review by Carlos Aguilar and the Interview with Amat Escalante by Carlos Aguilar.
Platinum Best Screenplay Award: Sebastian Lelio, Gonzalo Maza (Gloria). Also nominated were Daniel Sánchez Arévalo (Great Spanish Family), David Trueba (Living Is Easy With Eyes Closed), Lucia Puenzo (The German Doctor-Wakolda)
Platinum Award For Best Original Score: Emilio Kauderer for Foosball (Football). Also nominated were Karin Zielinski for El Limpiador (The Cleaner) -- you can read its Review by Carlos Aguilar , Joan Valent (Zugarramurdi Witches)
Platinum Award For Best Animated Film: Foosball (Football). Nominated were Anina -- you can read Anina's Review by Carlos Aguilar , The Secret Of Jade Medallion, Justin And The Sword Of Value, Uma History Of Love And Fury
Platinum Award For Best Documentary: Con la Pata Quebrada (With a Broken Leg). Nominated were: Cuates de Australia (Friends from Australia), Eternal Night Of The Twelve Moons, The Day That Lasted 21 Years from Brazil about the U.S. instigated coup d’etat in 1964, Still Being.
Camilo Vives (recently deceased, head of production for Icaic) Platinum Award for Best Iberoamerican co-production, in memory of his Presidency of Fipca for over 10 years and co-chair of the Forum Egeda / Fipca was The German Doctor Wakolda which beat out Anina, Esclavo de Dios and La jaula de oro. Santa Sangre
Stars: Axel Jodorowsky, Blanca Guerra, Guy Stockwell, Thelma Tixou, Sabrina Dennison, Adan Jodorowsky, Faviola Elenka Tapia, María de Jesús Aranzabal | Written and Directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky
I love films, I always have. From an early age I’d watch them and take every detail in and I’d read books on them. The problem with the subject though is that it’s huge. You can watch so many films every year and feel you know an amazing amount then something will come along that totally blows everything out of the water. Alejandro Jodorowsky is a name that I’m sure some will know and some won’t, I’ll admit I didn’t know much about his work if anything, and then I was given the chance to review Santa Sangre. One way to describe this film is an education into the extreme, the surreal and the stunning.

Killing Them Softly (18)
(Andrew Dominik, 2012, Us) Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini. 97 mins
With a cast like that, no prizes for guessing this is a gangster movie. But despite the well-trodden ground, it finds its own patch thanks to an up-to-date landscape of economic hardship and all-round criminal incompetence. Thus, Pitt's suave assassin breezes into town to clean up a mess, but only gets caught in a bigger one. It's tough, violent stuff, but with a certain sleazy finesse.
Savages (15)
(Oliver Stone, 2012, Us) Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Blake Lively. 130 mins
Stone gives up the politics and returns to crime, with a violent thriller involving two pot-growing California dudes and their run-in with a Mexican drug cartel.
Hysteria (15)
(Tanya Wexler, 2011, UK/Fra/Ger/Lux) Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, 99 mins
The invention of the vibrator and the phenomenon of women's "hysteria" are viewed with jaunty decorum but some political savvy in this Victorian romcom.

It was 12 years between films for Alejandro Jodorowsky when he announced his making of the film Santa Sangre. Nobody knew what to expect, and for good reason: Jodorowsky is a dividing director. A visionary, a master at his craft, eccentric and difficult to truly categorize, he made films that you couldn’t help but speak about for days and weeks after seeing them. Everything from El Topo, The Holy Mountain and Fando & Lis were films that were like a punch to the temple and were big during the midnight screening boom. But with Santa Sangre, he was coming back after a self contained sabbatical from film making and back to the forefront of cinema. Did he bring the goods or did we get a dud?

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre had been without a Us DVD release since it originally premiered in the early 90s. Since then, the film has remained a bit of enigma to anyone who was unlucky enough to miss it. Made some 10 years after his last film, Santa Sangre marked a return to Mexico and a return to the fabulously surreal world that fans of Jodorowsky had been so familiar with. Now thanks to Severin Films, Santa Sangre has been released on both DVD and Blu-ray with over five hours of exclusive extras.

Santa Sangre is the story of a young circus performer, the crime and passion that shatters his soul and the macabre journey back to the world of his armless mother, deaf-mute lover and murder. It is an odyssey of ecstasy and anguish,...

Rating: 5/5
Writers: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Roberto Leoni, Claudio Argento
Director: Alejandro Jodorowsky
Cast: Axel Jodorowsky, Blanca Guerra, Guy Stockwell
The Movie:
For all the bizarre characters, mixed religious iconography, and surreal set pieces, Alejandro’s Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre, well-deserving of its cult classic status, is his most straightforward work. It’s a human story, a journey into, around, and through manhood and the subversion of coming-of-age by life events both mysterious and profound. At its core is Fenix (the young version played by Adan Jodorowsky and by Axel Jodorowsky in adulthood), the son of a gluttonous strongman/knife-thrower, Orgo (Guy Stockwell), and a trapeze performer/armless-saint-worshiping-cult leader named Concha (Blanca Guerra), who literally becomes part of his own mother and is forced to help her rid the world of the the lust and promiscuity that led to the destruction of their family.

So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.
Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.
Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

Many thanks go out to Aaron Soto for passing along word of upcoming Mexican thriller Bajo La Sal (or Under The Salt), a dark murder mystery about to hit Mexican screens. Starring Humberto Zurita - a leading Mexican actor of the 70s and 80s - and Blanca Guerra - who you may remember from Santa Sangre - the film revolves around a series of corpses discovered buried in a salt mine. If the trailer is to be believed this is one seriously well made, very creepy piece of work and Warner Brothers’ Mexican arm certainly seems to think they’ve got a major picture on their hands here: they’re running the trailer for it in front of Mexican screenings of The Dark Knight.
