Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins’ The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one of the best films released in 1994, the same year when Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were released. While the latter two managed to nab some Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption shockingly went empty-handed, but, it hasn’t undermined its reputation of being one of the best films of that decade.
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption
The inspiring and heartwarming prison drama told the story of one man’s resilience and eventual freedom from being put into prison despite claims of innocence. The ending of the film saw the emotional reunion of Freeman and Robbins’ characters. It seems the original treatment of the film was slightly different, one which Freeman was vehemently against.

How often do we stumble upon a blockbuster flick that doesn’t quite get its due roses when it comes to the box office? Some films become instant classics, drawing audiences from every corner and grossing millions of dollars at the box office. However, there are some hidden gems that may not have received the recognition they deserve, despite their indescribable brilliance. One such film is The Shawshank Redemption, which starred Tim Robbins in the leading role.
The 1994 film, helmed by Frank Darabont (The Green Mile and The Mist), has endured the test of time and remains an unlikely classic. Despite receiving critical acclaim and seven Oscar nominations, The Shawshank Redemption did not perform well at the box office.

Upon its 1994 release, Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption disappointed at the box office. Despite garnering critical acclaim and earning seven Oscar nominations at the 67th Academy Awards, the film fell short commercially, grossing only $18 million against a $25 million budget.

However, after getting praised by the Academy and receiving seven nominations, the film was re-released and reportedly earned an additional $10 million in revenue. Beyond its theatrical resurgence, it also gained significant traction among audiences, becoming the most rented movie of 1995.
It has since become one of the most beloved films of all time. And while it failed to make it big at the box office initially, the cast of the film has continued to benefit from residual earnings, with Bob Gunton even ensuring that his daughter will receive checks for years to come.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most beloved, and critically acclaimed, films of all time. On top of having an excellent cast; including Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Clancy Brown, and Bob Gunton, it was also directed by Frank Darabont, who is best known for his work in The Walking Dead.
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in a still from The Shawshank Redemption
Even though the film is a thriller, it almost has a lighthearted essence to it, which makes audiences love it all the more. It has an excellent approach to storytelling, showing the worst sides of humanity being overshadowed by a glimmer of hope. All of these aspects have helped the film become the highest-rated film on IMDb, holding a score of 9.3.
Despite this, the film had a very poor run at the box office when it was initially released. It would seem that Robbins has a theory about why this happened.

In one of the oddest moments of the 1970s, Elvis Presley met President Richard Nixon. The King of Rock’ n’ Roll made a comment about George Washington that Nixon seemed to dislike. Subsequently, Elvis made a great quip.
Richard Nixon said Elvis Presley dressed oddly like George Washington
During a 1977 interview with Hot Press, the “Hound Dog” singer noted that an interviewer gave him a certain look. “Y’know Nixon had that same look in his eyes the day I walked into the White House wearing a purple velvet cloak, s***loads of jewelry, that big ol’ belt I got from the International Hotel with a gigantic gold buckle, and amber-tinted sunglasses!” Elvis recalled.
“And I knew that sonofab**** was going to say something about my clothes before I left,” the singer added. “And he did. I’d walked over to this portrait of George Washington — and I looked at his powdered hair,...

Having taken the world by storm with "Saw" in 2004, Australian director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell were suddenly the hottest new act in horror. Unfortunately, three years later, the duo would suffer the dreaded "sophomore slump" with "Dead Silence," an original puppet horror film that was lambasted by critics and bombed at the box office, barely matching its $20 million budget. It's a shame, honestly. I won't deny that "Dead Silence" has its problems (which we will get into), but it's also an enthrallingly gothic tale of mystery and the macabre (one bursting with creative ideas and inventively ghastly visuals). Not to mention it functions as a useful primer for the rest of Wan and Whannell's horror oeuvre.
"Dead Silence" starts out pretty nasty and only gets meaner the further along it goes. Upon being anonymously gifted with a ventriloquist doll named Billy (think Slappy from "Goosebumps" only somehow even...

This year’s Tony race for Best Musical Revival has two Stephen Sondheim shows (“Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd”) in contention. Will one of them win or will they cancel each other out? Let’s go over both of them.
“Into the Woods” combines several fairy tales and explores the consequences of the characters’ quests. The main storyline focuses on a childless baker and his wife as they go into the woods to break a spell set upon them by a witch. There they run into various classic fairy tale characters, all before revealing what happens after “happily ever after.”
The original production won three Tonys in 1988 for Best Actress (Musical) for Joanna Gleason, Best Musical Book for James Lapine, and Best Original Score for Sondheim. Meanwhile, Best Musical that year went to “The Phantom of the Opera,” which wound up with six other awards. The last remounting of...

When Jesse Green wrote in his New York Times review of this season’s revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” that the show had been “restored to its proper size,” he meant its orchestrations, staging, and ensemble, but he could have been forecasting its Tony Awards nominations success, too. This most recent remounting of the legendary Stephen Sondheim musical received eight Tony bids, the most of any musical revival of the year. But how does it stack up against the original production and the two revivals that preceded it?
While this “Sweeney” is back to its original scale, it is actually just shy of the very first production in terms of the Tonys, missing its nominations record by one. The original from 1979 netted nine bids for Best Musical, Director (Hal Prince), Actor (Len Cariou), Actress (Angela Lansbury), Score, Book, and Scenic, Costume and Lighting Designs. The...

Creatives are burning with rage over Hollywood’s hottest new trend: streaming platforms’ habit of canceling finished films and TV series before they’ve aired or pulling projects from platforms and shelving them indefinitely.
The Hollywood Reporter has been asking around about the effects of consolidation, budget cuts and tax write-offs kneecapping projects like Batgirl, Snowpiercer, Scoob!: Holiday Haunt and Westworld, among others. It’s happening all over town as entertainment companies have been forced to contend with consolidation, inflation, a possible recession and a constant chase for subscribers.
“It’s been horrifying,” prolific creator Rian Johnson (Glass Onion) tells THR. “The fact that it’s becoming common practice is terrible and adds to the awfulness. In the history of the business, there has been a constant evolution of horrible things.”
Last month, THR reported that two Netflix feature films were up for grabs after the streamer opted not to distribute the films.

In a surprising move, Netflix has decided not to release the completed genre films The Inheritance (directed by Alejandro Brugués) and House/Wife (directed by Danis Goulet) as Netflix Originals. Thankfully, this isn’t a situation like Warner Bros. deciding to scrap Batgirl instead of going through with its release. The filmmakers behind these two projects will be able to try to find a new home for them… and the search is already underway. The Hollywood Reporter hasn’t been able to dig up any information on why Netflix decided not to release either of the two movies.
Scripted by Joe Russo and Chris Lamont and produced by Paul Schiff, The Inheritance stars Bob Gunton, Peyton List, Austin Stowell, Briana Middleton, David Walton, Reese Alexander, and Rachel Nichols. Not so long ago, Netflix had the reputation for saving movies and TV shows. As the biggest streamer, Netflix was able to give closure to fans of "Arrested Development," "Lucifer," "Gilmore Girls," "Designated Survivor," and even "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" when their original networks couldn't (or wouldn't) bring those shows in for a landing.
On the movie side, Netflix famously took "The Cloverfield Paradox" off of Paramount's hands and they shocked the world by adding it to their service right after the film was announced via a Super Bowl trailer.
Those days might be long gone, though, as The Hollywood Reporter has gotten wind that Netflix is axing two of its original movies: "The Inheritance" and "House/Wife." Even in their glory days, Netflix was known to cancel their regular series without explanation or closure, so they've always had a foot in that typical Hollywood machine world, but...

A trend among entertainment companies as Hollywood continues its will-they/won’t-they relationship with a possible recession is the unloading of completed projects. The move has been seen across the industry, from AMC+ to Parmaount+ and Disney to HBO Max. Now The Hollywood Reporter has learned of two completed Netflix feature films, The Inheritance and House/Wife, that will no longer be distributed by the streamer, with filmmakers shopping them elsewhere for distribution.
The Inheritance, directed by Alejandro Brugués and produced by Paul Schiff, and House/Wife, from director Danis Goulet and producers Tripp Vinson and Daniel Bekerman, are genre films that were set to be released by Netflix, which will now no longer move forward with the movies.

For nearly three decades, "The Shawshank Redemption" has held the coveted position of a Stephen King adaptation that goes above and beyond its source material, in addition to being one of the most renowned films ever made. A poor release strategy ended its theatrical run before it could even begin, but the advent of home video gave the film a second life in the eyes of the people.
Based on King's 1982 novella, "Shawshank" weaves in and out of the lives of convicts imprisoned in a cold, authoritarian habitat that warps the human mind on what it means to live a meaningful life while atoning for their past misdeeds. At the same time, however, the movie also exists as a crucial reminder to keep the light of hope burning in the direst of situational circumstances. The film evolves emotionally each time you see it, depending on where you are in your life,...

The cast of Daredevil: Born Again is expanding.
Deadline revealed this week that Revenge alum Margarita Levieva has been added to the cast as a possible love interest for Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock.
Sandrine Holt has also landed a role that will see her star opposite returning star Vincent D'Onofrio.
While details remain scarce about what this show will be about, the casting announcements appear to be ramping up.
It was revealed earlier this month that Michael Gandolfini was joining the series in an undisclosed role.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe likes to keep fans in suspense, and given that Daredevil: Born Again will be a part of the fifth phase of the MCU, it's understandable that more information is not available.

James Wan and Leigh Whannell shaped an entire horror movement with their rise to fame "Saw," and have since become contemporary mainstays both with collaborative and separate successes. Among them is a wooden bastard child — 2007's "Dead Silence," their follow-up to 2004's "Saw," was decimated by critics. Whannell has famously gone on to reveal his displeasure with how the studio machine treated "Dead Silence" (in a now-deleted personal blog entry), seemingly leaving a sour taste in everyone's mouth. Many have tried to forget "Dead Silence" exists, except me.

The new "Daredevil" live-action TV series "Daredevil: Born Again" starts shooting February 2023 in New York City, not as a continuation of the Netflix TV series , but as a fresh 'reboot' according to actor Charlie Cox, who reprises his role as blind vigilante crime-fighter 'Matt Murdock':
"It is a Season 1, it is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing," Cox said. "Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently...right now I'm just buzzing that it's kind of happening again, it's starting up again.
"And I don't know where it's going, I don't know how much involvement I'm going to have, I don't know what it's leading to, but it feels like we're born again.
"And so I feel like I'm getting a second chance at the dream job I refer to as...'the gift that keeps on giving.

After months of teases, we finally have confirmation.
Daredevil will rise again.
As announced during a panel for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a new series titled Daredevil: Born Again is real.
What's more, Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio have closed deals to return, meaning this new iteration will be picking up from Daredevil Season 3.
The series started its life at Netflix, lasting three critically-acclaimed seasons before becoming a casualty of the streamer's change in focus.
It was canceled alongside The Punisher, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones.
An iron-clad deal prevented the characters of these shows from being used in future Marvel projects for a set amount of time.
Ultimately, Cox returned as Matt Murdock on last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home, and is even set to voice the character in a new animated series Spider-Man Freshman Year.
The new series is getting an expanded episode order:
18 episodes.

The finale of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" has proven to be somewhat of a demarcation line for viewers. Either you buy into the sentimental nostalgia of seeing Harold Ramis' Egon make one final appearance on screen or you don't and it comes off as incredibly ghoulish.
I'm personally in the former camp. Seeing Ramis on screen again, even in a CGI capacity, standing shoulder to shoulder with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson to finally put Gozer in her place was a full-circle moment that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I totally get the grinches on this one, though. The very idea of...

John Sayles’ coal strike epic is grand American filmmaking bolstered by fine Haskell Wexler cinematography, great performances by dedicated actors, and a screenplay that avoids the common pitfalls of liberal filmmaking — by assuming the structure of an action Western. Filmed on a shoestring not far from the site of historical events, the pro- Union picture revs up viewer emotions, winding up as a moving, satisfying experience. Matewan’s been out of circulation far too long, but those that remember it will give it a high recommendation.

The Shawshank Redemption began as only a moderate success at the box office, but went on to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars®, and defied the odds to become one of the most indelible movies in film history. It’s also one that most moviegoers have never seen on the big screen. The Shawshank Redemption will return to movie theaters nationwide for three days only, September 22, 24 and 25, to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Since premiering in October 1994, it has been elevated as a modern day classic and has held the No. 1 ranking on IMDb’s user-generated Top 250 list for more than a decade.
Fathom Events presents the 25th anniversary of The Shawshank Redemption as part of the annual TCM Big Screen Classics series. Adding to the special big screen return, TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz will provide exclusive commentary before and after the feature.

You can get busy living, or get busy dying. Or you could get busy and head to the 25th anniversary celebration of The Shawshank Redemption, a celebration of one of the most popular films of all-time being held in Ohio Aug. 16-18.
The 1994 film was shot in and around Mansfield, Ohio, and that location will be filled with fans and some cast members, touring the spots captured in the film. For those who haven’t had access to television or a theater in the last several decades, The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite claiming innocence. He befriends a fellow prisoner, Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman). Dufresne becomes involved in a money-laundering scheme run by the warden, but manages to turn the tables with a few twists and manages to escape the prison.
