He spent most of WWII diving in the waters off the Greek islands, conducting research for his doctoral thesis in marine biology. After receiving his Ph.D. from Berlin University in 1943, he was conscripted into a Wehrmacht frogman unit.
He was a marine biologist and underwater filmmaker who was among the first to introduce worldwide audiences to the beauty of coral reefs, stingrays, octopuses, and sharks.
