Kentucky Republicans have created a controversy with their new “Safer Kentucky Act.”
The bill, also known as House Bill 5 or HB5, focuses on increasing public safety by imposing stricter penalties on certain criminal offenses. The most notable targets have been homelessness and drug use. Introduced by state Rep. Jared Bauman (R-Louisville) to the Kentucky legislature, the bill has 52 sponsors with voting set for next week.
Critics of the bill point out that it would allow property owners to use deadly physical force on homeless individuals if deemed necessary. Democrats have brought up how the bill does not address the root issues of homelessness and affordable housing.
Director of the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, Jason Hall, stated that this new bill is “counterproductive.”
Louisville Metro Council Member Shameka Parrish-Wright also expressed her concerns and said HB5 would “[criminalize] poverty” at a committee hearing.
Outspoken Democrats included state Reps. Keturah Herron and Nima Kulkarni,...

Bradley Cooper teamed up with Clint Eastwood for the autobiographical drama American Sniper. And although Cooper enjoyed his time on set with the veteran, there was one sequence he couldn’t believe he had to do.
Bradley Cooper had to hold a fake baby for Clint Eastwood’s ‘American Sniper’ Bradley Cooper | Larry French/Getty Images
Cooper and Eastwood were both praised for their efforts in the movie American Sniper. The pair even got near Oscar glory thanks to the film. Eastwood was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Meanwhile, Cooper was nominated for Best Oscar. But the highly praised feature also faced a couple of criticisms. In particular, the film was targeted for a laughable scene that showed Cooper cradling a baby he had to pretend was his child.
But Cooper didn’t mind the criticisms. Even he couldn’t get over the bizarre sequence, believing it was nuts.

Chicago – “Gran Turismo” uses the life story of a gamer named Jann Mardenborough to get its message across … he was a college dropout in the UK who used the hours spent behind the steering wheel in his bedroom to become a real race car driver. While the racing scenes deliver the goods, this poorly conceived piece of product placement never gets its narrative out of first gear.

Neill Blomkamp is back.
The director, best known for a trio of films that effortlessly blend startling futurism with barbed social commentary, has returned with “Gran Turismo,” his first studio film since 2015’s “Chappie” and his first movie since the pandemic-shot, micro-budgeted “Demonic” in 2021. And it marks a kinder, gentler Blomkamp. All of his filmmaking hallmarks are still there, from elaborately staged action sequences to relatable characters to the kind of camerawork that captures the immediacy of real life, but this time it’s in serve of an elegant – and, crucially, feel-good – sports movie.
Based on a true story about the PlayStation video game franchise, “Gran Turismo” follows Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), a young, working-class Englishman who wins a “Gran Turismo” tournament that allows him to become a real-life racecar driver. That’s when he starts to bond with David Harbour’s Jack Salter, his flinty (but still caring) trainer.

In Nick Castle’s 1984 film that Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen have both tried to remake, Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) is an aimless teenager who perfects an arcade game called Starfighter and ends up being recruited by the game’s alien inventor to help fight in an interstellar war. Well, Neil Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo tells the true story of how Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe) mastered the Gran Turismo video game en route to being recruited by Nissan and becoming a professional racing driver.
Harbour’s character, Jack Salter, who’s a former driver turned mechanic, is the one tasked with actually turning Jann into a proper race car driver, and the role has shades of Robert Duvall in Days of Thunder (1990), John Candy in Cool Runnings (1993) and Emilio Estevez...

In 2009, Nissan teamed up with Sony for Gt Academy, a reality TV show that posited a real-life Last Starfighter scenario: that the Gran Turismo series is such a finely tuned racing simulator that players who mastered the games could be trained to harness their skills to become actual professional racers. To the credit of all involved, that theory turned out to be true.
The focus of Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo film is the true story of Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), the biracial son of a retired British footballer who goes on to be Gt Academy’s third and youngest winner. Jann’s journey into the professional racing world is marked by some very impressive, consistent highs and an extremely terrifying low, stemming from a major crash in 2015 that’s depicted in the film in pretty harrowing detail.

Working in an oft-traversed realm, Gran Turismo director Neill Blomkamp and writers Jason Hall and Zach Baylin have delivered a racing car drama that’s rather different from the others. With plenty of potent auto action, some well-defined characters and welcome fresh components, this is an engaging look at people who overcome their own doubts and perceived shortcomings to help pull off something genuinely unusual. It’s a lively, spunky piece of work with no pretenses and all the more welcome for that. Originally dated for August 11, Sony pivoted amid the actors strike, and is sneak previewing the next two weekends, with the official wide opening on August 25.
For a long time it seemed that becoming a “gamer” was not considered a very likely means of achieving any particular eminence, not to mention real standing, in more legitimate and remunerative realms of endeavor. It was kids’ stuff, certainly something from...

While writer-director Neill Blomkamp’s expertise with genre material — from his international breakthrough, sci-fi revelation District 9 (2009), to dystopian dramas Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2015) — makes him a good fit for an action-oriented sports biopic, it’s perhaps his background as a visual effects artist that proves his greatest asset in bringing Gran Turismo to the screen.
Marshaling a well-integrated combination of innovative digital camera techniques, compelling production design choices and an impressive visual style, Blomkamp’s visceral directing emphatically reinforces the film’s dynamic pacing.
Since it’s “based on a true story” (as the title insistently emphasizes), there’s limited potential for dramatic license with the available material. And while subject Jann Mardenborough has an inspiring backstory, the filmmakers don’t manage to wring much tension from a series of fairly predictable plot developments. But video game enthusiasts, including a sizable audience of Gran Turismo devotees and motorsports fans motivated...

Product placement has rarely been as chronic or concussive as it is in Gran Turismo, inspired by the real-life experiences of British teenager Jann Mardenborough (played here by the sweetly gauche Archie Madekwe), whose PlayStation proficiency won him the chance to compete as a real-life racing driver in Gt Academy, a Nissan-sponsored promotion intended to get the public loving cars again. This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
At this point, the "video game movie" classification feels just about as broad and changeable as that of a "superhero movie." Is there any point in lumping together movies like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" or "Detective Pikachu" with "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" or "Uncharted"? (Does anyone even remember "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" or "Uncharted"?) By the same token, any lingering talk of an all-expansive "curse" associated with these adaptations increasingly comes across less like some inexplicable barrier that studios have (mostly) been unable to cross, and more to do with the idea that simply trying to translate a medium as idiosyncratic and immersive as video games into the wildly different language of film has always been self-defeating.

“Gran Turismo” is a film of contradictions. On the one hand, it’s a video game movie while on the other it’s a true story about how a video game turned one of its players into a legitimate racecar driver. It’s a film aimed at fans of said video game, but not quite a feature built for the whole family. While it’s good in the moment, it’s doubtful you’ll must up much recognition of it within the next few months.
The film tells the story of Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), a teenage boy trying to figure out his path in life. His father Steve (Djimon Hounsou), would love to see Jann go outside and experience life, but the young man would rather spend his day playing the racing game, Gran Turismo.
On the surface, Jann’s story has all the hallmarks of a typical formulaic family film.

After such adaptations like the Uncharted movie or HBO’s wildly popular The Last of Us, Sony has a great list of titles from their Playstation library that could easily translate to the big screen. However, when it comes to sports games, there isn’t much of a narrative from which to draw source material. The closest option would likely be to do an adaptation of a story mode, like in Madden or Fight Night Champion. However, Sony would interestingly take a unique approach in bringing a game like Gran Turismo to life in movie theaters. The second trailer for Gran Turismo has just dropped from Sony. And while a sports game would include real-life athletes or participants to be made playable for the gamers, it would be inevitable to draw from real life when adapting to a live-action film. The synopsis for the film reads, “Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough,...

Fresh off the $1 billion-plus success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the next big-deal video game adaptation has dropped its first trailer and poster. Rather than attempt to make a workable fictional narrative from a series of racing video games, the filmmakers have opted to adapt a true story connected to the games.
The film, penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and helmed by “District 11” director Neil Blomkamp, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe in the film) whose video game skills won a series of Nissan competitions and allowed him a shot at being an actual race car driver. “From Gamer to Racer,” the tagline states and it’s an interesting narrative that would be intriguing even sans the IP surrounding it.

Have you ever gotten so good at a video game, you’ve thought that you could do that thing for real? That’s exactly what happened (and then some) for young Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo enthusiast who became such an expert at racing online, that he took to the track, becoming a professional driver – and the subject of the new action-packed movie of the same name, the trailer for which dropped earlier today. Watch it below:
Archie Madekwe stars as talented teenager Jann, whose incredible gaming skills led to him being chosen for Gt Academy and winning multiple Nissan racing competitions. David Harbour looks to be on excellent father-figure duty as his trainer, Orlando Bloom is the PR guy that sees Jann’s potential, and Djimon Hounsou and Geri Horner play his parents. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is behind the camera, and the screenplay was written by Jason Hall and Zach Ballin.

Ready, set, race.
The PlayStation video game franchise “Gran Turismo” inspired the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, a young teenager who began a racing career. Now, director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) is bringing that story to the big screen.
“Gran Turismo” stars Archie Madekwe as the aforementioned teen who aspires to become a professional race car driver with the help of his trainer (David Harbour) and a motorsport marketing executive (Orlando Bloom). Djimon Hounsou portrays Mardenborough’s father, while Darren Barnet plays a Gt Academy driver threatened by his new opponent.
“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was originally set to helm the feature in 2015. Also that same year, Blomkamp was attached to a fifth “Alien” film starring Sigourney Weaver.
The “Gran Turismo” video game is a racing simulation from developer Polyphony Digital, led by Kazunori Yamauchi. The original game featured recreations of real-life vehicles and spurred a 14-installment franchise...

The first trailer for director Neil Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo,” adapted from the popular PlayStation video game racing franchise, has been released.
Blomkamp, whose notable directing credits include “District 9” and “Elysium,” departs from his typical science fiction subject matter to take on the sports racing film. Based on a true story, “Gran Turismo” follows a young teenager who’s obsessed with playing the racing video game and gradually takes his controller skills onto a real racetrack with hopes to become a professional race car driver. Archie Madekwe plays the film’s main character, with David Harbour as his racing trainer, Djimon Hounsou as the teenager’s father and Orlando Bloom as a motorsport marketing executive. Darren Barnet plays a respected Gt Academy driver who feels threatened by the teenager’s fast-growing success.
The racing simulation video game franchise began in 1997 with a self-titled entry from developer Polyphony Digital, spearheaded by Kazunori Yamauchi.

If I had a nickel for every time Hollywood developed a video game movie that isn't technically a video game movie, I'd have two nickels -- which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice recently.
Yes, "Tetris" isn't the only 2023 movie that focuses more on a video game's real-world impact than the game itself. The other one is Neill Blomkamp's "Gran Turismo," a true story drama about Jann Mardenborough (played by "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" actor Archie Madekwe) and how he went from a kid playing "Gran Turismo" video games to becoming a professional race car driver. The footage shown at Sony's CinemaCon panel presented the film -- which was penned by "American Sniper" scribe Jason Hall and "King Richard" writer Zach Baylin -- as a "Top Gun"-styled rah-rah depiction of a U.S. institution crossed with a real-life underdog sports biopic. Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9, Elysium, Chappie, Demonic, and the upcoming Gran Turismo, is preparing to go into production on his fifth feature directorial effort – and The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Joel Kinnaman of The Suicide Squad and the RoboCop remake has signed on to star in the film, an alien abduction thriller called They Found Us.
Although Blomkamp had written the screenplays for his previous films (co-writing District 9 and Chappie with Terri Tatchell), he didn’t write Gran Turismo, and he hasn’t written They Found Us either. This time he’ll be working from a script written by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight).
They Found Us will see Kinnaman taking on the role of a father who takes his daughter Kaylee on a camping trip in the Utah wilderness, in an effort to heal their broken relationship. When they are attacked by a hostile extraterrestrial lifeform,...

Video Game movies have truly turned a corner over the last handful of years, but with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" currently in the midst of a record-breaking run in theaters, the tide has truly turned in a big, bad way. Fortunately for Sony Pictures, they've got a big video game movie (sort of) on the way this summer in the form of "Gran Turismo," which takes its name from the beloved eponymous racing game series. The story is based on real events, however, which makes it more than just a run-of-the-mill video game adaptation. And during Sony's presentation in Las Vegas at CinemaCon tonight, the studio showcased new footage from the film.

With franchises all the rage in Hollywood and comic book properties harder and harder to come by, Hollywood is having to turn elsewhere. As such, video game movies (and shows) have become an increasingly popular option. The good news is, we're moving past the days of old when all video game movies were terrible. As such, Sony has made a bigger push to bring its PlayStation titles to the big screen. To that end, we're getting a "Gran Turismo" movie this summer. Though it may not be what you think, as this isn't going to just be a straight-up adaptation of the games. After all, they're just racing games, what actual story is there to tell?
Well, Sony Pictures offered a little peek at what they've got coming down the pipeline later this year during CES. Though not quite a trailer, the footage gives us a taste of what to expect.
