This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
X-Men ’97 ended with more than a few spinning plates. Sure, Bastion was defeated, but the events sent some of the X-Men to the far future and others into the past. And yet a few others were zapped to parts unknown, such as Wolverine, who remains in critical condition after Magneto ripped out his adamantium skeleton. Back in the present, Forge and Bishop make plans to find their friends. Then there’s the matter of Professor X and Magneto’s mental states, which seems to be pointing toward the coming of the terrible Onslaught.
As that last point reminds us, as wonderful as X-Men ’97 is, a lot of its power comes from the Marvel comics that it adapts. The first season of X-Men ’97 ran quickly through some important storylines from the comics, including Inferno, Mutant Massacre, Lifedeath, and Operation: Zero Tolerance.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.
The goriest moment of "X-Men '97" season 1 will assuredly go down as episode 5, "Remember It," which saw the mutant nation of Genosha wiped out just as it was in the dark "X-Men" comic arc "E is for Extinction."
Episode 9, "Tolerance is Extinction Part 2" just gave it a runner-up though. Magneto, who has returned to his old villain ways, is fighting the X-Men on his new base of Asteroid M. Wolverine, famous for his adamantium-coated claws and skeleton, stabs Magneto. Undeterred, Magneto uses his powers to tear out the adamantium from Wolverine's body.
This bit, like most of the episode, is taken from 1993 "X-Men" comic crossover event "Fatal Attractions." The episode ends with a shot recreating a panel from "X-Men" #25 (drawn by Andy Kubert) of liquified adamantium heeding Magneto's call and pouring out of Wolverine's battered body. Writer Peter David first suggested this as a joke,...

This article contains spoilers for X-Men ’97 episode 9.
Wolverine has always been a mystery, ever since he stalked the Hulk through the Canadian wilderness in his 1974 first appearance. Over the years, readers got occasional glimpses into his past, from his real name(s) to his shady black ops missions.
One of the most shocking reveals came in the aftermath to 1993’s X-Men #25, the climax of the crossover event Fatal Attractions, when an incensed Magneto ripped out Wolverine’s Adamantium skeleton.
X-Men ’97 has already run through some of the most important events in X-Men history, covering Inferno, Mutant Massacre, and E is for Extinction in the span of nine 22-minute episodes. But the series set up something much bigger when it pulled from Fatal Attractions in the penultimate episode of the first season, “Tolerance is Extinction Part Two.” By that episodes end, a desperate Magneto stops Wolverine the only way he knows how,...

The latest trailer for "Deadpool & Wolverine" suggests the movie might be even more of a cameo-fest than we'd previously predicted.
Hugh Jackman is back as Logan, of course, and he's bringing leftover characters from the erstwhile 20th Century Fox's Marvel Universe. We already knew Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Pyro (Aaron Stanford), and Toad would be back. So will Wolverine's archenemy Sabretooth, perhaps finally giving Logan a chance at closure.
Around the 1:50 minute mark of the new trailer, you were probably focused on the decapitated head of a Giant Man variant (his rotting skull concealed within his ant-styled helmet). I'm much more curious about the characters standing beneath this makeshift base, who look to be familiar (mutant) faces from previous "X-Men" films: Yuriko Oyama/Lady Deathstrike from "X2" and Azazel from "X-Men: First Class."
Both are seen at too far a distance to determine if their previous actors...

It takes five minutes for “Motendo” segment of the latest episode of X-Men ’97 to reveal its big bad. A stomach-churning yellow creature covered in metal appears on screen and yells, “I am Mojo, your primetime psycho inter dimensional TV producer who feeds off ratings!”
That’s actually a pretty good description for Mojo, one of the strangest Marvel villains of all time. The “Motendo” segment finds Mojo kidnapping Jubilee and Roberto Da Costa (not yet taking his Sunspot moniker) and sending them into a video game. There, they battle various computerized baddies and garner praise from an audience, which in turn makes Mojo more powerful.
Unsurprisingly, the segment includes plenty of nods to the history of X-Men video games. And if you’re the type of person who got upset that the episode used a Snes portmanteau to describe a system that looked...

Actor Marlon Wayans is known for his stand-up comedy and comedic roles in films such as White Chicks and the Scary Movie franchise. Though the actor has ventured into dramatic territory with films such as Requiem For A Dream he was mostly known for his comedic endeavors as he gained fame with his sitcom with brother Shawn Wayans, The Wayans Bros.
Wayans also starred in the 2009 action film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The Stephen Sommers directorial was an adaptation of the popular comics of the same name and starred Channing Tatum and Wayans in lead roles. Due to Wayans’ reputation as a comic actor, fans were reportedly concerned that the film would not be a serious adaptation of the action comics.

Welcome to Sales to Astonish, a new column in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us news on comic sales and the general moves in the comic market over the past month or so!
Having written this column for over a year now I am starting to notice some distinctive trends in my monthly activity throughout the year. I had touched on elements of this in previous instalments but in a nutshell the trends can be defined as simply as this:
Busy months – January, March, May, October, November & December Busy days – Monday & Thursday Busiest hours – 6-8am Thursday
It will come as no surprise to regular readers that the busiest hours in the week immediately follow the release of new stock in the store on a Thursday. At a guess I would say that Monday is busy because people casually browse the website...

In June, “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment recently scored two highly coveted comic book licenses from Hasbro, “The Transformers” and “G.I. Joe,” with both planned for release this fall as part of the new “Energon Universe.”
Kirkman won’t have any input into future movies based on “G.I. Joe,” but given the difficulty that franchise has had on the big screen lately, we couldn’t help but ask Kirkman for his take now that he’s got a toehold on the universe.
“There’s certainly good aspects to the, the ‘Snake Eyes’ movie, and the other two ‘GI Joe’ movies, I think that maybe didn’t perform in the box office as much as Hasbro and Paramount would have liked,” Kirkman said during the Q&a portion of the “Transformers & G.I. Joe Return in The Energon Universe” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, hosted by Comicbook.com’s James Viscardi.

This article contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
When we first meet Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), he’s a tech genius struggling to find a job and a purpose. By the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, he’s found a purpose by playing an important role in helping the Autobots and Maximals stop the Terrorcons from bringing the planet-destroying Unicron to Earth. But he still doesn’t have a job. That is until he’s approached by a man who knows what Noah has done for the planet and wants to recruit him. The name on the man’s business card? G.I. Joe.
By this point, shared universe teases such as these have become commonplace in blockbuster films, often pointing to larger franchises that nobody really wants (R.I.P. Dark Universe). But the G.I. Joe reveal in the latest Transformers might have a...

Are we going to have to start calling this series Beast Goes Full Evil? At this point I think Benjamin Percy is the only writer I would trust to have a comic called Wolverine completely dominated by Beast and his continuing journey to the dark side. It has been going on for three issues now and it works. Beast is the center of attention in this book right now and Percy is killing it! Not to completely scare fans off, Wolverine does make a fleeting appearance in this issue in true Wolverine fashion. Barging in on the Quiet Council and telling them exactly what is what and how he is going to put things right. Though out reading this issue I did keep asking myself how and if this ties into ‘Fall of X’ or...

“G.I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained, special mission force.” So declares the voiceover in the theme song for G.I. Joe, the cartoon show that dominated after-school televisions in the 1980s. And by that criteria, Channing Tatum seems like the perfect choice to play Duke, leader of the Joes. Is he highly trained? Of course! Have you seen Step Up or Magic Mike? Is he daring? Anyone who caught his cameo in This is the End would give a resounding “yes”!
But the song also tells us that G.I. Joe “never gives up” and is “always there.” On that account, Tatum might fall a little bit short.
Recently, Tatum agreed to strap on a lie detector and answer questions for Vanity Fair. And to test the actor’s resolve, Vanity Fair went right for the tough questions: “You played Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Well, the newest look at "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" certainly has some very interesting footage for fans to dissect. Seriously, those shots of all the Spidersonas together in what appears to be some sort of middle ground between multiverses look incredible, and we are certain that the actual animation to bring these characters to life will be stunning.
This multiverse middle ground doesn't just have the potential to look cool. "Into the Spider-Verse" proved that it was possible to travel between dimensions, with a couple of previously-obscure characters ushering in this important, multi-franchise-spanning plot point. With the waters now properly tested, it looks like "Across the Spider-Verse" will be taking advantage of all the creative opportunities involved in a multiverse concept, including just how many crazy characters can get their big-screen debut.
We have already known some of the "new" Spidersonas that will be appearing in the film -- Jessica Drew,...

Wow. Wow. Wow. There is so much going on in this issue, it is a case of throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks! This is a melting pot of story. It throws together elements from the recent X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine event as well as elements from Swords of X, X-Force and of course the current event Axe. Despite all the moving parts going on the story moves at a great pace, jumping from scene to scene. What stands out the most to me is how Percy takes the situation of having to tie into an event and completely makes it his own monster. It feels like this arc would hold up without the Axe connection. It is a perfect example of how to tie into an event and keep the identity of your on going series.

Well, how about that? Deadpool 3 is going to bring back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine! Considering the big announcement centered around it and the claw-based logo, Marvel looks to be treating this as a major part of the movie and not a high-profile cameo like Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. They are outright selling us on the idea of a Deadpool/Wolverine team-up at the box office!
This is obviously not the first time we’ve seen these two together in the movies. Deadpool 3 will be coming out a sobering Fifteen Years after X-Men Origins: Wolverine, known as what not to do with the X-Men movie rights. The movie introduced a version of Deadpool that has been met with rightful mockery. Since then, images of Wolverine have shown up in the Deadpool movies as a running gag, including a moment of reused footage from...

Everything old is new again. The return of the Patch persona, from Wolverine’s Madripoor days, is another in Marvel’s recent nostalgia push. As their main line of books modernizes, with changes to characters and themes not universally enjoyed, Marvel is trying to keep that older market with previously untold stories from classic runs by classic creators. We’ve got the classic 90’s pairing of Ron Marz and Ron Lim on Silver Surfer, we’ve got X-Men Legends revisiting classic periods of the past with Claremont, and now we have Larry Hama back writing Wolverine from the classic 90’s run. Which is great news. Hama brought a real freshness to the book when he wrote it, and I still have all his issues which stand up well today. He ‘gets’ Wolverine.
Let’s see what we get.

Welcome to the first Versus of 2022 and it is a big one to start! This year I wanted to go bigger than just pitting similar characters together. 2022 is also the 30th anniversary of the birth of Image Comic, so what better way to start than by having the Image 7 face off in the versus arena, with their biggest and best issues going toe-to-toe. The story of Image Comics is still fascinating to this day and it still represents the biggest seismic shift in the comic industries landscape. In a nutshell, the era is the early 90s, the seven biggest talents in the industry are all working for Marvel Comics and they have had enough of the way the industry works. They get a lot of flak for being the cause of the comic market crash. That is a sign of the impact they made. DC and Marvel were scrambling to...

I didn’t think it was possible to get a great standalone issue in modern comics, especially in the Krakoan Age of X-Men comics we are currently in. But I am always happy to be proven wrong! What I like about this issue, in particular, is that even 19 issues into a new era and a solo book at that Percy is continuing to world build for the Krakoan Age. Don’t you just love the idea of Krakoa having its own myths and legends outside of the X-Men we all know and love? Part of why this issue I love this issue is because of all the allusions to Jaws. I love that movie! Moby Dick is another obvious inspiration. Percy after all is a literary guy so of course he is going to channel two classics to shape a Wolverine romp.

These two issues are a brilliant romp through the espionage flavour of the X-Men world that Benjamin Percy has been shaping in the pages of Wolverine in recent months. The two part story is a colourful journey that takes the reader from the lightheartedness of karaoke night at The Green Lagoon, through the grey tones of mutant espionage and the depths friends and enemies a like will go to for the ‘greater good.’ As well as all that Percy hits us with some stops and homages on some of cinemas greatest spy movie moments. When Henry David Thoreau said “Simplify, simplify, simplify,” he probably wasn’t talking about the long-running Hasbro military action figure franchise “G.I. Joe,” but here we are anyway. Director Robert Schwentke (“The Captain”) has taken that advice with a brand-new live-action feature film that strips away most of the toy line’s sprawling cast and focuses instead of on two of its most popular characters: The speechless assassin Snake Eyes, and his misunderstood blood brother–nemesis Storm Shadow.
Since the early days of the cartoon series (and fleshed out particularly well in Larry Hama’s run in the Marvel “G.I. Joe” comic books), Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow have been trapped in a seemingly never-ending cycle of jealousy, betrayal, murder, mistaken identity, and revenge. Their backstory is the closest that “G.I. Joe” has probably ever come to Shakespeare — which is to say not especially close, but pretty darned good for...

Nothing beats a live Comic-Con with the scream of the audience, the thunder of Hall H, and the social media wattage that shines out of San Diego.
I’ll never forget the first time that Marvel walked the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy from the Hilton over to the Convention Center. The fans went so crazy, you’d think some of The Beatles came back and there was an immediate reunion. Instead, no thanks to the impact of Covid-19, we have the second year of a virtual San Diego Comic-Con.
Paramount’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Throughout the annals of story-driven toy properties, there has rarely been a rivalry as complex as the one between G.I. Joe characters Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Yet, adapting that relationship is a task that upcoming movie Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will boldly attempt to tackle, albeit with some contextually-necessary alterations to the classic comic book story famously crafted by writer Larry Hama. While such changes tend to be abhorred by longtime fans, they will manifest with the blessing of Hama himself.
A revelatory new trailer and featurette for Snake Eyes has arrived, further pulling back the story curtain than this past May’s teaser trailer. The debut trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins wants you to know that the upcoming film is on a new level, as its accompanying rap by A$AP Ferg declares. While the final verdict on that bold claim will be decided once the pandemic-delayed film finally drops in July, the franchise aspirations are quite apparent. Henry Golding’s black-clad ninja commando is complemented by signature characters such as Scarlett and Baroness, and a teased focus on the Hasbro toy property’s other popular ninja character, Storm Shadow.
G.I. Joe’s silent, ass-kicking mascot himself, Snake Eyes, as played by Crazy Rich Asians breakout Henry Golding, takes center stage in director Robert Schwentke’s relaunch of the film franchise adapting Hasbro’s 1980s-launched “A Real American Hero” iteration. It was last represented on the big screen by 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (directed by Stephen Sommers) and 2013’s G.

I just had a big, stupid smile on my face as I read this from cover to cover! Outside of just being a fun read, this issue actaully moves the story in interesting ways from where we left off last month and it leaves you waiting for the next issue. In the previous issue I mentioned how Maverick was portrayed as a real badass. A character trait of his we haven’t seen too much of, especially in recent years. This issue sets it up as a plot point as to why he is this all new badass Maverick . Just as a little side note I continue to enjoy Wolverine’s commentary on how mutant affairs are shaping up on Krakoa. #9 only had 1 text piece which is an improvement on recent months. But I still didn’t bother to read it.

Idw Publishing's "G.I. The seventh episode of Marvel 616, the Disney+ documentary series promoting the Marvel brand, is titled “The Marvel Method.” It references the pioneering shift in comics work production that came about at the dawn of the Marvel era of comics, and is ostensibly about the fun, wacky way that Marvel comics get made today. What it actually portrays is a high-stress, broken production process.
Also, nothing that happens in it is consistent with the traditional Marvel Method.
The episode opens with Dan Slott, writer of a near-record 180 issues of Spider-Man comics, and currently Marvel’s Fantastic Four writer, sitting down with 12 weeks of lead time to write his first issue of Iron Man 2020. The writer gets one sentence into the script before being distracted by a Twitter notification. The episode goes on to detail the painstaking process that the Marvel team undergoes to put the first issue of Iron Man 2020 on shelves.

In the early days of this pandemic we find ourselves all in the idea flew around Twitter of doing a modern take on the Marvel/DC Amalgam of the mid 90’s. Just to put some commentary on to this idea, I’m sure it was suggested with the best intentions and it certainly got people talking online. In my opinion I don’t think such a project would help in a big a way as predicted. You see time and time again comic shop owners saying ‘event’ comics don’t bring a surge of new costumers. Why would this be different, especially when you add in the doubts over the industries future. Anyway enough negativity. All the posts about a Marvel/DC Amalgam made me dive into my long boxes and dig out two Wolverine-centric issues to talk about here.

As stay-at-home orders started to crash over the world at the end of March, Diamond Comics Distributors announced that it would be suspending shipping of new books. Diamond has been functioning essentially as a monopoly for years, so this move meant, for all intents and purposes, the end of new comics releases, and it’s been that way for a month. But now, DC Comics announced that new comics will be hitting shops on April 28th, and the way they’re doing it could be a long-term shift in how we get the comic books we love.

Star Wars didn't just change Hollywood, it changed the way toys were made and marketed.
This article is presented by eBay
In A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi describes the Force as an energy that surrounds and penetrates all living things, binding the galaxy together. But the venerable Jedi Master could just as easily have been talking about the power of Star Wars itself. The cultural impact of George Lucas’ creation is so vast that it created generations of fans and changed how Hollywood approached blockbuster filmmaking.
But Star Wars also changed nearly everything within the toy industry. Whether those changes will continue to be told for thousands of years—like the tales of the Jedi and Sith of old—remains to be seen in the long arc of history. But one thing is for certain, for the following brands, Star Wars was a great disturbance in the Force of their business.

We spoke with Ron Brister and Ben Penrod, the creators of Awesome Con, about what sets their show apart from other big fan conventions.
This article is presented in partnership with Leftfield Media and AwesomeCon.
It happens nearly every weekend around the nation. Thousands of superheroes, villains, monsters, fantasy fellowships – and even a few civilians -- gather alongside the actors who portray the characters, and the creatives who give them life. They gather to dress up, share their love of fandom, hear experts talk, pursue holy grail collectibles, nab autographs, and photo ops.
This is the world of comic cons, and it is quite literally show business where pop culture comes to life. And for the past decade, in particular, business has been booming as more fandoms emerge, and genre content takes over box offices, networks, and streaming platforms.

Eddie Brock and his symbiote have been through so many adventures. Here's a Venom comics reading order for beginners.
On October 5, we are getting a Venom movie. Kind of crazy, right? At least this one won’t have any dorky dance sequences in it. Anyway, if you want to read up on Venom before he hits the big screen again, it’s a bit of a tall order because there’s been a handful of different guys under the black goo and many comics with his name on the cover. Luckily, we have a streamlined list of stuff to get you going.
Now, we’re going to focus on Eddie Brock stuff because that’s what Sony is doing. That said, if you’re interested in the Mac Gargan era, I highly recommend Dark Reign: The Sinister Spider-Man. If you want some Flash Thompson Venom action, read...

A Snake Eyes solo movie is the most exciting G.I. Joe movie news we've heard in quite some time.
The G.I. Joe franchise hasn't had it easy on the big screen. The 2009 movie was, frankly, awful. But 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation was tremendous fun, enhanced by Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, a Bruce Willis performance where he almost looks like he wants to be there for a few minutes, and an absolutely brilliant multi-colored ninjas on a mountainside stunt fight that showcased Snake Eyes in all his glory. That alone is worth the price of admission.
But despite that, G.I. Joe 3 is taking its time getting off the ground. The project certainly exists, and, last we heard, it's slated for a March 27, 2020 release. In the meantime, Paramount isn't about to sleep on this franchise, though, as they've just put a G.I. Joe spinoff movie...
