We caught up recently with I Spit on Your Grave reboot series director Steven R. Monroe to garner his thoughts on the polarized critical response to the CineTel Films/Anchor Bay Entertainment release of his feature I Spit On Your Grave 2, as well as on the future of the franchise, and more. Monroe, whose extensive directorial credits include the genre features House of 9 (2005), It Waits (2005), and the upcoming Cerina Vincent-vehicle MoniKa, as well as the 2010 Sarah Butler-starring remake of Meir Zarchi’s controversial 1978 rape/revenge feature I Spit On Your Grave, proved refreshing in his honesty in regards to what drew him to directing the sequel, as well as his understanding of the polarized response to it, and his exasperation with a faction of the blogosphere, among other things. Having premiered at London’s FILM4 FrightFest this past August with a subsequent release to Blu-ray, DVD...

Screenwriter Thomas Fenton (Saw IV, I Spit On Your Grave 2) is the latest guest in our Q&A series. The horror writer took time to share his experience working on I Spit On Your Grave 2 and offers advice to aspiring screenwriters:
Can you tell our readers a bit about your previous work that led up to you taking on I Spit On Your Grave 2?
Years ago I wrote a script called Prodigal Son – it was set up at Beacon Pictures with Twisted Films producing. Ultimately, the deal fell through but that put me on the Saw radar. It was my work on that franchise that led to work on IS2.
How did you become involved on the sequel to I Spit On Your Grave? Was this a story that you pitched to the producers or you were hired specifically to work on an idea they had?

When Katie innocently accepts an offer to have new photos taken for her portfolio, the experience quickly turns into an unthinkable nightmare – Severely beaten, battered, bruised, and left for dead, she will have to tap into the darkest places of the human psyche to not only survive her ordeal, but to ultimately find the strength to exact her brutal revenge.

There were two very good reasons to watch the original Embrace of the Vampire, and they're both missing from the remake. Will another buxom beauty step up to the plate to fill those huge voids? We'll find out soon enough because the flick is shooting now.
According to Variety, Alan Mruvka's Filmology Labs Entertainment is teaming with Grobman-Campbell Films to produce a remake of Embrace of the Vampire, the 1994 cult pic starring Alyssa Milano that was produced by Mruvka.
The erotic thriller is being financed by Lisa Hansen and Paul Herzberg of Cinetel Films along with Anchor Bay Entertainment, which is a division of Starz Media. Like a supernatural Fifty Shades of Grey, the story follows a virginal college student who is introduced to a dark world of carnal desires after being seduced by a handsome vampire.

We caught up recently with I Spit on Your Grave star Sarah Butler, director Steven R. Monroe and producer Lisa Hansen, who weighed in on the status of a potential sequel to their 2010 redux as well as on the alternate ending to the which remake audiences didn’t see! Read on.
“We are thinking about it,” CineTel Films producer Hansen confirmed for us of a follow-up to filmmaker Monroe’s 2010 gut punch of a remake of Meir Zarchi’s original 1978 rape-revenge film. “The movie didn’t do well theatrically, but it did do really well on DVD so we are considering it, but until we have a really concrete story that we believe will work and which will deliver to the audience and not be a sell-out, we won’t be going into production. We just aren’t there yet.”

At a time when remakes – like them or not – are status quo for the movie industry, few films achieve a level of being anywhere near as good as their originals. This is especially true for the horror genre. After so many still-births and disappointments (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Last House on the Left, to name but a few), fans have longed for someone to take a beloved film from the past and improve it, updating it to fit a more modern sensibility. Many have tried… most fail.
Enter director Steven R. Monroe and his re-imagining of the exploitation classic I Spit On Your Grave (review here) (Blu-ray/DVD review here). Long whispered about by fans as a cornerstone of late ’70s grindhouse fare, I Spit On Your Grave is admittedly a tough row to hoe. The film tells the story of a woman living alone in a...

The Film:
I wish I could have been there to see the look on Roger Ebert’s face when he had to watch the remake of a film he notoriously smashed and banned. Did a remake of I Spit on Your Grave need to occur? I don’t know, let’s not get to existential with it, but as famous and rough as that 1978 film is, it’s far from a technically good picture. Steven R. Monroe directs a beautiful tale of woe and insecurities, that even with its Rambo-styled finale (the revenge), the taboo nature of rape is long echoed after the credits.
Thorough director Meir Zarchi’s 1978 exploitation classic, a sense of feminism was prevalent, even if it was heavy-handed. Camille Keaton’s emotional turn as Jennifer Hills still is chilling. But even with all of this, the film is rather poorly made, with odd pacing and long-winded takes.

In the past few years there has been an influx of remakes in the horror genre. We all know that’s not a good thing but unfortunately the mainstream fans line the aisles and spend the bucks that allows this to continue to happen. It is well documented that I have not ever been nor will I ever be a fan of these remakes. I will say now that I am man enough to admit when I’m wrong. I guess the formula needs to be correct for a successful remake. Then comes walking in I Spit on Your Grave. Read more to see what I thought of this remake of the 1978 film of the same name.
The tale of I Spit on Your Grave is one that all fathers dread when they have a daughter, as it is worse than anything that Liam Neeson’s daughter in Taken could ever imagine.

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Paranormal Activity 2 Paranormal Activity 2 is a sequel that didn't need to exist. But since it does, I'm glad it happens to be as good a sequel as anybody could've reasonably hoped for. I recognize there are those who find it far less scary than the first film, and though I can respect the reasoning from a pacing and build-up standpoint, I can't quite fathom the logic behind it. Perhaps the problem is that I don't have any fear of ghostly supernatural forces—especially not ones inclined to spookily open doors and occasionally thump on walls. In Paranormal Activity 2, the terror becomes real, because the family is being legitimately terrorized. And by subverting expectations of...

The remake of I Spit On Your Grave is an example of why I don.t get bent out of shape when one of my favorite movies is remade. Sometimes they get it right. A much-reviled cult film that revolves around an extended and graphic rape sequence seems like an odd film to revisit but writer Stuart Morse and director Steven R. I always felt Ebert.s hyperbole was inappropriate and hypocritical (his screenplays for Russ Meyer combined sex and violence not only for entertainment but for laughs). What riled Roger so much was the film.s centerpiece...

Let’s face it, Anchor Bay never really expected their remake of “I Spit on Your Grave” to do very well in theaters, and indeed, it didn’t. Of course, coming into theaters with an “Unrated” tag probably didn’t help either, though it obviously gave the film plenty of notoriety for its real endgame — DVD, cable, and other ancillary sales. Anchor Bay will be releasing the 2010 remake along with the 1978 version on February 8, 2011 in DVD and Blu-ray. See the cover art and specs for both versions below. With Cinetel Films’ remake of the infamous 1978 rape-revenge film I Spit on Your Grave hitting theaters unrated on October 8th courtesy of the rather ballsy Anchor Bay Entertainment, this writer hit the film's red carpet premiere last night in Hollywood, CA, and brought back some ocular candy as well as interviews with some of the principals...and a rather interesting bit of news.
