AMSTERDAM -- Paul Verhoeven's Soldier of Orange, the 1977 war film that made the Dutch director and his leading man Rutger Hauer international stars, is getting a second life as a stage musical.
Netherlands-based producer Entertainment Content Factory is in preproduction on the musical that will bear the Dutch title Soldaat van oranje and be known in English as Rebel and the Queen.
U.S. composer Tom Harriman is responsible for the music. The songs will be written by Pamela Philips Oland, known for her work with Jermaine Jackson and Whitney Houston.
Dutch actor-writer Edwin de Vries, who collaborated with Jeroen Krabbe on the film The Discovery of Heaven, will write the script for the musical.
The story is based on the memoirs of war hero Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, who escaped Nazi-occupied Holland to become the personal assistant of Queen Wilhelmina, who at the time lived in exile in London.
Verhoeven's film is considered one of the greatest achievements in Dutch cinema history. Last year, another film by Verhoeven, Turkish Delight, was turned into a musical in the Netherlands and was greeted with excellent reviews.
