Disney announced the name, arrival date and more details about its reimagined Splash Mountain ride on Friday during a special Essence Fest panel held at New Orleans’ Preservation Hall.
The revamped attraction, titled Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, will make its debut at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland in late 2024, according to the Disney Parks Blog. The new attraction, which celebrates the characters and real-world Louisiana setting of The Princess and the Frog, is a musical adventure inspired by the 2009 film and first animated Disney feature to star a Black princess.
The experience will pick up where the film left off, with riders joining the movie’s leading characters Princess Tiana, Naveen and the jazz-loving alligator Louis on a bayou adventure that sees the trio hosting a Mardi Gras celebration. Disney promises that the attraction will feature both new and familiar faces to the New Orleans-based universe,...

Most of the classic films that run on TCM are introduced by a single host. In March, some will require a whole team.
The WarnerMedia outlet on Thursdays this month will seek to put some popular but troublesome films in better context, part of an effort it calls “Reframed.” A team of the network’s on-air personnel will introduce viewers to some of Hollywood’s most seminal pictures, which remain popular but are increasingly being scrutinized under a different lens as the nation ponders more deeply how people of different races, backgrounds and creeds treat one another.
Teams will ponder cultural issues posed by films such as “Gone With The Wind,” “Psycho,” “The Searchers,” “My Fair Lady” and “Gunga Din,” among others. Some of the hosts hope the initiative will continue beyond the next four weeks.
“We are hearing more and more from audiences about moments they are really puzzling over,...

Disney has announced that it will be retheming the controversial attraction Splash Mountain following years of criticism about the racist origins of the ride.
The revamped version of the attraction will be based on the iconic 2009 animated film Princess and the Frog, featuring Disney’s first black princess, Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose).
Splash Mountain is based on the 1946 Disney movie Song of the South, which is based on the Uncle Remus stories of Joel Chandler Harris, a white Southern author who purported to have heard the stories from...

When the lineup for Disney’s new streaming service, was released last week, there were so many obscure titles on the list that even the most diehard fan was left wondering whether they really existed, or were just an elaborate prank conceived of by Disney CEO Bob Iger. (If anyone in the history of human existence seen a single frame of Fuzzbucket, Mr. Boogedy, or Sammy the Way-Out Seal, first of all, how, and second of all, why?) There was one relatively well-known film, however, that didn’t make the list,...

As Vanity Fair’s cover profile, Michael B. Jordan provoked a storm of criticism with one line: “We don’t have any mythology, black mythology, or folklore. …Creating our own mythology is very important because … You help people dream.” Jordan likely knows that black folkore has a very long, rich history. It’s quite possible he had a more specific point in mind — frustrations over the lack of film and TV content that exploits black folklore — but the interviewer doesn’t make it explicitly clear with a follow-up question, leaving many to assume that the “Creed II” star meant exactly what he said.
The actor has yet to make a public statement responding to the criticism, and he declined to comment for this story. However, rather than pillory Jordan over what he may or may not have meant, here’s a brief overview of black folklore to serve as introduction for the uninitiated.

I’d love to know the backstory behind the news today that Warner Bros. Animation Group is going to be making a Speedy Gonzales film. Warner Bros. has been much better about embracing their animation legacy than Disney has because they’ve never hidden from their own past. One of the smartest things Warner has done when releasing collections of their older animation is including cartoons that have uncomfortable racial or sexual material, pointing out that they are the product of their time rather than pretending they never happened. It bothers me that Disney is willing to continually exploit the characters from Song Of The South at the Splash Mountain attraction and in merchandising, but they keep the film locked up in a way that only makes it seem more dangerous or offensive. Instead of putting together a release that would honor the work of James Baskett and the innovations...

It looks like we're entering a whole new world of documentaries about the Walt Disney Company. There have been two feature-length documentaries about Disney released in theaters during the last seven months alone. Last fall's "Walt & El Grupo" examined Walt Disney's goodwill tour of South America in the 1940s. This week's "Waking Sleeping Beauty" is an insider's account of the company's return to artistic form during the 1980s and early 1990s. Disney, both the man and the company, remain one of the most interesting subjects in Hollywood history, and there are plenty more possible topics for future documentaries. But many of them wouldn't paint the Mouse House in such a favorable light. So the question then becomes -- would Disney ever let anyone make them?
Though "Waking Sleeping Beauty" has earned plaudits from some critics for its candor, these films are still to varying degrees Disney movies about Disney, made...
