Paul McCartney‘s “My Love” was one of his biggest hits during his time with Wings. In addition, Petula Clark also had a No. 1 hit called “My Love.” Notably, Clark didn’t enjoy her song at first and her opinion of it never changed.
Paul McCartney’s ‘My Love’ came out after Petula Clark’s hit with the same name
Clark released a hit called “My Love” in 1965. Meanwhile, Paul released a Wings track called “My Love” in 1973. During a 2013 interview with Songfacts, Clark revealed she wasn’t a fan of her hit. “We recorded three songs on that session,” she said. “We recorded them in LA, and I had to leave immediately after the session. I liked the two other songs quite a lot, but I really didn’t like ‘My Love.'”
Clark told Warner Bros. A&r executive Joe Smith she didn’t like “My Love,” but he was unmoved.

Petula Clark doesn’t consider “Downtown” to be “jolly” music. In addition, she said the track is partly about loneliness. Notably, the track helped her become one of the most successful female singers of the 1960s.
Petula Clark | David Redfern / Staff How Petula Clark feels about ‘Downtown’ after performing the song countless times
During a 2013 interview with Songfacts, Clark was asked to discuss which of her songs were interesting to her. “Well, this is going to sound really corny, something like ‘Downtown,'” she said. “I don’t know how many times I’ve sung the song, let’s face it. And over the years the images have changed in my head. When I re-recorded it for Lost in You, it was interesting.

Great music can be difficult to understand. For example, Petula Clark’s “Don’t Sleep in the Subway” baffles the star who sang it. Notably, the oblique lyrics of “Don’t Sleep in the Subway” made it fit in with numerous other songs from the 1960s.

Clark co-starred in the 1968 Francis Ford Coppola musical Finian’s Rainbow with Fred Astaire. During a 2013 interview with Songfacts, she discussed talking with the movie star. “Well, I remember Fred Astaire, we used to spend a lot of time just sitting around singing,” she said. “I thought he was a great singer and he would sing those wonderful songs from his movies.

After leaving The Beatles, Paul McCartney had more freedom to do whatever he wanted musically. His solo career and time with Wings are filled with oddball songs that showed McCartney’s willingness to think outside the box and experiment with new sounds. One song from Wings was an intriguing choice for the singer-songwriter, and he labeled it as a “joke,” even though he enjoyed the track.

Venus and Mars is the fourth studio album released by Paul McCartney and Wings. The album had massive expectations, following up on the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Band on the Run. While it didn’t receive the same acclaim, it still reached No. 1 on the charts and featured the No. 1 single “Listen to What the Man Said”.
The album ends with an odd duo.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Series: "Rome"
Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max
The Pitch: Ah, what could and should have been. Back in 2005, which is exactly 1000 years ago in the post-pandemic reckoning, HBO pretty much began the era of very expensive, prestige television with the TV series "Rome." This was before streaming and the rise (and fall) of many services with a whole lot of money to burn. "Rome" was incredibly expensive, but it was so good that fans clamored for more. There were supposed to be five seasons, though we only got the first wonderful one and a second, very rushed (but still good) season. Think of it this way; "Rome" had to walk (and get canceled early) so that "House of the Dragon...

British signer Petula Clark has expressed dismay and disappointment after her song “Downtown” could be heard playing from the suspected Nashville bomber’s explosives-filled vehicle moments before the tragic incident on Friday.
“I was told that the music in the background of that strange announcement – was me – singing ‘Downtown!”, Clark said in a statement on Facebook. “Of all the thousands of songs – why this one?”
In surveillance videos depicting the moment of the bombing, Clark’s pop number plays under an evacuation warning. The singer, whose number seems to have scored the suspected attacker’s crime, also expressed “shock and disbelief” at the explosion in the downtown area of the music mecca. She also said that many listeners have found joy and much-needed comfort in her anthem, but noted that “you can read something else into these words – depending on your state of mind.”

The white male domestic terrorist who blew up his Rv on Nashville’s historic Second Avenue on Christmas morning — injuring three, crumbling buildings, and damaging more than 40 businesses — played Petula Clark’s 1964 hit “Downtown” over the camper’s speaker system before the blast. On Tuesday, the 88-year-old English singer issued a statement of “shock and disbelief” that her song was the prelude to such a crime.

Petula Clark makes it her mission to live for today, but she’d prefer to make an exception on the afternoon we speak. The iconic singer—best known for her string of million-sellers in the 1960s—turned 85 this day, and an attempt to begin our phone call with a happy birthday greeting is met with a faux groan. “No, no no—don’t go there. I haven’t done those for a long, long time,” she says with a good natured laugh.
Age is certainly irrelevant, but that goes double for Clark, who is currently in the midst of her...

As a row of women, led by prison guards, are marched onto a sparse and industrial set, the Julius Caesar that audiences are familiar with is revived and remodelled in Phyllida Lloyd’s adaptation of the Shakespeare classic, in this first instalment of the Donmar Shakespeare Trilogy.
The cast, exclusively female, and for some, their first experience of performing Shakespeare, not only bring a different voice to a stereotypically male dominated production, but at the same time provide a platform for voices of those who may feel excluded from mainstream society and culture.
Led by theatre veteran Harriet Walter, Donmar’s Julius Caesar pushes Shakespeare into new territory, bringing it bang up-to-date with current issues relating to gender, the prison system, fear and diversity. The audience on screen: set in the round, and filmed over two nights, allows for seamless camera placement. Part prison, part Rome: It smashes...

R.I.P Dr. Markway. I recently watched British actor Richard Johnson as Bulldog Drummond in Deadlier Than The Male, a tough and stylish Bond pastiche from 1967 with an odd Avengers twist. His Drummond was suave and sophisticated and I wasn’t surprised to read that Johnson was (one of many to be) considered for 007. And I was thinking just last night when I was watching Insidious 3 that I wished I was instead watching a better-crafted, genuinely creepy horror story like The Haunting (1963), which starred also Johnson. The actor had a varied career, starring in diverse roles ranging from Caius Cassius opposite Charlton Heston in Julius Caesar (1970) to Dr. Menard in Lucio Fulci’s unforgettable Zombie in 1979. Richard Johnson died in London yesterday at age 87.

Pre-Code Hollywood studios spent millions transitioning their medium to sound and other new technologies that brought about major advances in photography, lighting, and set design. But there were still five million unemployed people in the United States and many more just getting by. The studios were losing money, many of them going bankrupt.
By 1930 the breadlines were longer than the ticket lines and people were slow to give up their hard earned money. It’s no secret that I’m a fan of James Purefoy. He’s a great actor, and the sort of chap every Englishman should aspire to be.
Earlier this year (way back in March to be more precise) – I spoke to Purefoy while he was on a press tour to promote his TV show, The Following. The interview has been under wraps since then, but finally, with the show hitting DVD next week, it’s live.
During the conversation we not only spoke about researching serial killers, and having a pint with Ted Bundy, we also discussed missing playing Mark Anthony in Rome, and how he and Kevin McKidd are too bitter about Game of Thrones “stealing their show” for us to ever see them marauding around Westeros.
Also, on a side note, I now have a Bacon Factor of two.

William Shakespeare’s Star Wars is the latest mash-up offering from the independent publishing company aptly named Quirk Books, and is the creation of mega Star Wars and Shakespeare fan, Ian Doescher. It's a sweet emotion indeed for Aeromsith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. The Toxic Twins were among a host of musicians including Foreigner frontman Lou Gramm, Holly Knight, DJ Souther, and Tony Hatch that were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame Thursday night in New York. The 44th ceremony kicked off with Sting performing a rousing rendition of Elton John's hit "Saturday's All Right for Fightin'," in honor of the Rocket Man, who, along with his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, received the Johnny Mercer Award. (John had been inducted into the Hall in 1992.) Billy Joel paid tribute to Gramm and fellow Foreigner member Mick Jones by leading a sing-along to the...

New York — Sting performed in honor of Elton John, Billy Joel sang snippets of Foreigner's hits when introducing the band and Smokey Robinson debuted part of a new song he wrote about Berry Gordy.
The 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony was full of star power that included Alison Krauss, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Nickelback, Petula Clark, Wiz Khalifa, Jordin Sparks and a video message from Bill Clinton.
Tyler, Perry, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Holly Knight, Jd Souther and Tony Hatch were inducted Thursday into the Songwriters Hall 2013 class in New York City.
John and writing partner Bernie Taupin received the Johnny Mercer award, and Sting kicked off the night with a performance of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Sting also called John and Taupin "my two heroes."
John, who was inducted into the Songwriters Hall in 1992, said songwriting is often taken for granted.

Rome Episode 1 Season 1 ‘The Stolen Eagle’
Written by Bruno Heller
Directed by Michael Apted
Aired 2005 on HBO
We have Band of Brothers to thank for Rome. The success of that collaboration between the BBC and HBO cemented the partnership which made the show possible. It helped that the HBO bosses at the time were fans of I Claudius – the BBC produced series based on Robert Graves’ books, which established the crowd-pleasing potential of the period by leavening the dull history bits with the spectacle of John Hurt as Caligula exercising his god-fantasies by getting his sister pregnant and snacking on her unborn child.
HBO liked the idea of Rome, which fast forwarded past the antics of Caligula et al to the equally eventful but slightly less colorful period when Julius Caesar conquered Gaul, so much that although the original pitch was for a mini-series, the network commissioned a full 12 episodes.

There is a sumptuousness and exotic look and feel to the Ancient Egyptian culture that I have always been drawn to. The clothing, décor, architecture – it has always been utterly fascinating and their monarchies and dynasties are as rich as any in Europe. One of the best biographies I read in the last few years was Stacy Schiff’s Cleopatra, which mined all known existing records about the Queen and attempts to weave together the most likely version of her storied life and death.
On the other hand, the 1963 spectacle of the same name merely adapted Plutarch’s version of events. Today, Cleopatra has become shorthand for a bloated misfire of a film and is always cited as the one that nearly caused 20th Century-Fox to crumble. The studio survived and has had the last laugh, making a fortune off the film ever since. Out now is the overdue Blu-ray...

Jennifer Lopez has revealed plans to release a 3D tour film.
The singer will star in a feature-length documentary which followed her on her 'Dance Again... The Hits' world tour back in 2012.
Lopez revealed that the footage will centre around her arena shows and will also touch upon the aftermath of her divorce from Mark Anthony.
"It was my first tour ever so it's a special thing," Lopez told New York radio station Z100.
"I thought, we should document this! I'd been through a big change in my life with the divorce and everything, and as crazy as we are we thought let's put that on camera!"
The film will coincide with her new single 'Live It Up', which premiered earlier today (May 8).
The track features Pitbull and was produced by RedOne. It will head up Lopez's tenth studio album, which is currently scheduled for a November release.

Review Louisa Mellor Dec 23, 2012
The penultimate episode of this run of Peep Show is another belter. Here's Louisa's review...
This review contains spoilers.
8.5 Chairman Mark
After a handy restatement of this series’ plot arc in the opening few minutes (Jez loves Dobby; Mark’s attempts to get her to move in are being foiled at every turn), Chairman Mark quickly became what’s known in technical circles as a bit of a corker.
Mark lost his job and Jeremy - briefly - moved out, but as ever with Peep Show, the big stuff was incidental next to the characters’ humdrum victories and defeats. The next time you put a t-shirt on a coat hanger or very slowly ease open a bottle of Cava, think of Jez and Mark, brothers in banality.
Mark proved, once again, that not only is he not an honourable man, he’s a petty, desperate, selfish,...

Jennifer López is feeling charitable. In a new video published on her official website, the singer asks her followers to donate at least $1 to help give the biggest Christmas gift ever.
“For the 12 days of Christmas I want to do something special with you guys. Let’s be part of the biggest Christmas gift ever,” López says in the video. “If each one of you guys who follow me on Twitter and Facebook can give at least one dollar, five dollars would be ideal, we can do something that has never been done before. We could collect millions of dollars.”
But the best part of the two-minute home video is the adorable cameo of her children with her ex-husband, salsa singer, Mark Anthony, Emme and Max, who run into the camera and mami’s arms to scream “Marry Christmas, everybody!” and “Give, give, give!”
The amount collected will be split...

Who Bombed Judi Bari? is one of the most extraordinary documentaries -- actually one of the most extraordinary films -- I have ever seen. It accomplishes something extremely out-of-the-ordinary: It not only substantially and vividly makes its point about environmental issues and the sizable contribution environmental activist Judi Bari made during her lifetime, but as it progresses it enters the domain of the "transcendental," the rarest of cinematic feats.
Who Bombed Judi Bari? is much, much more than an environmental activist documentary. Directed and edited by Mary Liz Thomson, and produced by Darryl Cherney (who endured the bombing and its aftereffects alongside Judi), it creates an intense, often amusing, wrenching, and ultimately extraordinarily inspiring cinematic experience.
Compounding its excellence is that it speaks to this moment in the history of the U.S. and the world. Though the film centers on the life of environmental activist Judi Bari (from 1990 until...

After being kept from North American theater screens for years now (for reasons unbeknownst even to director Michael J. Bassett) Solomon Kane, the adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s pulp-Puritan magazine stories from the early 1900’s has finally been awarded a release. For the most part, this grungy period epic both subverts and embraces its roots admirably, failing mainly when it begins to ponder and attempt the philosophical.
Starring James Purefoy who is best known for his stellar work as Mark Anthony on HBO’s Rome, Solomon Kane takes us on a bittersweet journey of redemption across mid-level Britain as a dark force led by the sorcerer Malachi is recruiting the strong, enslaving the weak and slaughtering anyone in between.
As is the case in both the source material and this adaptation, Howard tells a tale of Earth in the 1600’s where black magic is very real and even more...
