He was a famed bandleader of the 40s and 50s.
Faced with eviction from his home in 1987.
Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1981.
The name of his band was the Thundering Herd.
As a young man,
Alan Greenspan
, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve, played sax in Woody's band.

He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 6805 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.
Was also popular in Australia & New Zealand. He toured numerous times and last appeared in Australia in 1987, a few months before his death.
