Actor Charlize Theron got her first major film role when she was just 19-years-old. But she credited her own naivete as a youth for nabbing her the breakthrough feature.

Apart from her ability, Theron had a good amount of luck on her side when she was cast in 2 Days in the Valley. But fortune didn’t always smile down on the Oscar-winner. Before acting, Theron pursued a modeling career. In the end, however, she felt she was too tall to succeed in the industry.
“I was too tall, too big, too late for the supermodel look of the 80s. Kate Moss and all the tiny, grungy girls had just become fashionable, and I didn’t fit the bill,.” she once told HuffPost.

When you are making a documentary out of the life of someone as magnanimous as Sylvester Sly Stallone, bringing an X-factor to the table is a must. Given that it is coming from the house of Netflix, which has set pretty much a gold standard when it comes to the documentary genre, the audience would expect it to be nothing short of exceptional. Only a few weeks ago, the brilliant David Beckham documentary showed how to do it. Unfortunately, the Stallone documentary couldn’t quite achieve the greatness that it was supposed to. Let us take a closer look into both the “what” and “why” of Sly.
Childhood Was Not Too Kind
Life wasn’t easy for Sly and his brother Frank. The blame for that goes to no one but their parents, who didn’t have an easy marriage. And not only did they fail to protect the kids from the trauma of that,...

“Do I have regrets?” asks Sylvester Stallone at the beginning of “Sly,” the Thom Zimny documentary about him that served as the closing-night film at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday. “Hell yeah, I have regrets.”
Putting that quote up front is a smart way to introduce a film about the man whose career sometimes seems to have resulted in equal parts iconography and mockery. The actor, screenwriter and director created the classic characters Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, but struggled to find respect and made more than his share of terrible films.
Another smart move: New conversations with Stallone run throughout the film, but these are not the usual talking-head interviews in which the subject sits in a chair and runs through his life. Instead, Stallone almost always talks to the camera while standing up and moving around.

"The Expendables" franchise has — smartly — allowed its titular roster of tough, never-say-die mercenaries to include women, as demonstrated by 2014's "The Expendables 3" adding Ronda Rousey to the crew and the upcoming "Expend4bles" (type that five times fast) bringing in Megan Fox and Levy Tran.
However, while making the first "Expendables" back in 2010, that wasn't quite the case. That film only features two female characters: Lacy (Charisma Carpenter), the cheating girlfriend of Jason Statham's Lee Christmas, and Sandra (Giselle Itié), the daughter of a South American dictator who wants to use the Expendables to help overthrow her father and his ex-CIA puppet master, Munroe (Eric Roberts).
Although Sandra is an integral part of the film, she's no trained mercenary, and ends up being captured by the bad guys and tortured for information. It must've been difficult for the Brazilian actress to deal with the atmosphere of testosterone-fueled competition surrounding her,...

For all the unbridled machismo that defines the "Rocky" franchise, more credit does need to be given to the woman that stood in Rocky Balboa's corner. Talia Shire played Adrian with a quiet resignation in "Rocky" that really tapped into the feelings of desperation that the character had before meeting the Italian Stallion. She has accepted her fate. She's going to work in that pet store forever and take care of her abusive brother Paulie until he croaks. Shire portrays Adrian's devastating shyness beautifully. When Rocky starts chipping away at her defense, she slowly starts to come alive the more attention is paid to her. Rocky and Adrian's relationship is about transformation, and in order for Rocky to truly believe in himself, he needs to make Adrian believe in herself first. The closer they become, their dynamic changes gradually until Adrian is the one that's holding Rocky up, not the other way around.

Sylvester Stallone has had a few franchises over the years – Rocky, Rambo, The Expendables – but he also has a film that should have been a franchise starter, but never received any of the sequels it deserved. That’s the 1986 classic Cobra (watch it Here), which also happens to be the movie The Arrow in the Head Show hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are talking about in the new episode of the series. To find out what they had to say about Cobra, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by George P. Cosmatos from a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone (which was apparently loosely based on the novel Fair Game by Paula Gosling), Cobra has the following synopsis: Los Angeles policeman Lt. Marion “Cobra” Cobretti finds himself at the center of a spate of murders carried out by a secret society called New Order: killers who select...

We are big fans of the 1986 Sylvester Stallone action slasher Cobra (watch it at This Link) here on JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, so it’s cool to see that a sixth scale figure of Stallone’s Cobra character Marion Cobretti is now available for pre-order through Sly Stallone Shop. This officially licensed figure, endorsed by Stallone himself, looks awesome… and it should, considering it’s going for the price of 290! An image of the figure can be seen at the bottom of this article, and more can be seen at the Sly Stallone Shop link.
The figure, which stands approximately 12 inches tall, has the following features: – Ultra-realistic head sculpt (Hand painted) – Over 28 Points of articulation (Approx 30 cm / 12 Inches) – 6 posable gloved hands – Black Jacket – Black shirt – Jeans – Boots – Weapon holster – Colt Gold Cup National Match (Custom) – Machinegun Jatimatic Smg with 4 magazines and laser optic – Two hand grenades – Police badge...

When Olivia Newton-John died on Monday at the age of 73, the entertainment world lost an icon. The multi-talented British-Australian performer first rose to prominence as a pop star in the 1970s with the hit albums “If You Love Me, Let Me Know” and “Have You Never Been Mellow,” but movie lovers will always remember her as Sandy Olsson. Her starring role in “Grease” resulted in many of the most iconic musical numbers in film history, from “Summer Nights” to “You’re the One That I Want.” Newton-John’s musical pedigree and chemistry with Travolta went a long way toward propelling the film to success, and its soundtrack remains one of the best-selling albums in music history.
While “Grease” remained her most notable role, Newton-John continued to parlay her strong musical stage presence into a variety of other film parts. She notably starred in the Electric Light Orchestra musical “Xanadu,” which...

1997 called and wants its Quentin Tarantino knockoff back. That’s the bottom line on Bullet Train, a new dark comedy/thriller directed by David Leitch. Overlong, tedious, and endlessly self-satisfied, this is a movie that thinks it’s funny to score a montage of violence to an Engelbert Humperdinck song (which is announced as it happens).
Even 25 years ago, the idea got stale fast as one Tarantino wannabe after another tried and failed to emulate the original. The film thinks it’s being clever, but the mix of pop culture-drenched, faux-savvy dialogue, ironic and plentiful needle drops, “look at me” cameos, and cartoon-y violence was a lot better back when Qt was first doing it.
Based on a novel by Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka, the movie is slightly enlivened by hard-working performances from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King, and Brian Tyree Henry, as well as some striking design and cinematography, but...

Rick Aiello, actor and son of Oscar nominee Danny Aiello, died of pancreatic cancer on Monday at a hospital in Warwick, N.Y., his niece Sydney Fingerhut told Variety. He was 65.
Fingerhut remembers him as a great uncle who was close to all his nieces and nephews, and a “strong guy.”
With more than 60 acting credits, Aiello followed in his father’s footsteps, appearing alongside him in Spike Lee’s 1989 classic “Do the Right Thing.” His father earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Salvatore “Sal” Fragione and Aiello played Officer Long, a role he’d reprise a couple years later in Lee’s “Jungle Fever.”
Aiello also starred in films, including Christian Maelen’s “Remedy” and George Gallo’s “29th Street,” and toplined the TV series “Dellaventura” and the movie “A Brooklyn State of Mind” opposite his dad. As a character actor, Aiello had roles in shows such as “The Sopranos,...

Escape Plan 3: The Extractors, directed by John Herzfeld, is the third and final film in the not so good Escape Plan franchise that began in 2013 with a team-up of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and has somehow become a franchise and ended up receiving two direct-to-dvd ensembles with a cast of unknowns, and even weaker narratives. Shot back-to-back with the horrid and Stallone vacant second instalment Escape Plan 2: Hades, yet are both directed by two different directors, completes what is a disaster of a trilogy. The Extractors, thankfully, has nothing in common, in fact has Zero connections to, its predecessor. Yet strangely acts as a direct sequel of sorts to the initial film released in 2013, confused yet? Herzfeld’s film follows Ray Breslin (Stallone) who is hired...

In a recent Instagram post, Sylvester Stallone has sensationally slammed last year’s Escape Plan 2: Hades as “truly the most horribly produced film I’ve ever had the misfortune of being in.” What makes this even more incredible is that Stallone used his bashing of the movie to promote the third installment of the franchise, which is set to be released on home video in a matter of days.
The first Escape Plan finally saw Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger team up on the big screen, and that novelty factor resulted in the pic earning almost $140 million at the box office. After Schwarzenegger declined to return for the sequel, the series went straight to home video with Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson the only other cast member to stick around.
Something must have gone seriously wrong during the production of Escape Plan 2 though for Stallone to slam the project so publicly...

A stand-out in virtually every project he’s part of, we’re always ready for another performance from John Hawkes. His latest film, Too Late, finds him as a private investigator in Los Angeles hunting down a missing woman. However, it likely won’t be the story that gets talked about most (at least initially) when it comes to Dennis Hauck’s feature, but rather the structure and exhibition. It’s composed of five acts, each a single, uncut 20-minute-plus shot (roughly the length of an entire projected film reel), and it’s being released in the now-rare, 35mm-exclusive format starting next month.

A seedy Los Angeles-set crime caper filtered through an Elmore Leonard novel is where you might find Dennis Hauck’s debut feature film Too Late. Presented out of sequence as five unbroken twenty minute shots, the film has an undeniable theatrical quality, with each scene feeling like an act of a play being performed out of order. And it’s all shot on 35mm film, giving it that unique grainy texture, all while giving credence to the fact that Hauck is paying tribute to the vintage era of cinema. A bit reminiscent of John Herzfeld’s Two Days in the Valley, the tale is woven from several different perspectives of an ensemble cast that all come nicely together at the end to complete a compelling puzzle. While there is a definite fetishization of Tarantino-style dialogue, characters and even plotting, Too Late does an admirable job of paying homage to this...

The majority of Reach Me writer/director John Herzfeld‘s credits involve television, from TV series like Rob Lowe’s Dr. Vegas to TV films such as 1997’s Emmy-nominated Don King: Only in America. He’s done a bit of film work, notably 15 Minutes and 2 Days in the Valley, both films with enormous, famous casts that follow the lives of many supporting characters – falling in line closely with his latest. More importantly, he’s buds with Sylvester Stallone, who helped him crowdfund this project. In the movie, a mysterious author (Tom Berenger) has written a self-help book, entitled “Reach Me,” that’s found its way into the hands of many unsuspecting Californians, slowly changing their lives and bringing them together in ways they could not have imagined. Its themes are relevant to all: freed inmates (Kyra Sedgwick), rich rappers (Nelly), and the journalists who pursue its elusive author (Kevin Connolly and Sylvester Stallone). The book will cause...

A long time in the making, Reach Me, from filmmaker/actor John Herzfeld brings ‘positive thinking’ and ‘self-help’ to the big screen. It stars a bevy of Herzfeld’s actor friends and friends of friends, including Sylvester Stallone, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Connolly.
The title is one of a dozen or so newcomers opening in limited release this weekend. Music Box’s Happy Valley and Kino Lorber’s Monk With A Camera are among Friday’s debuting documentaries.
Happy Valley, named after the area where Pennsylvania State University is located, dives into the child sexual-abuse scandal that rocked Penn State, while Monk looks at an unlikely ascetic who gave up life in the fast lane.
Kino Lorber also is launching Iranian Western Vampire pic A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, which it is releasing with Vice Films. The title, which was born out of a previous short film, debuted at Sundance in January.

Writer/director John Herzfeld (15 Minutes, Two of a Kind) earnestly tries and spectacularly fails to dilute the acrid pretentiousness of Reach Me, a tone-deaf everything-is-connected melodrama, by cutting his characters' pseudo-enlightened philosophizing with goony broad humor. Herzfeld wants ideal viewers to identify with Roger (Kevin Connolly), an online yellow journalist who overcomes his initial disbelief and heeds authorial voice Teddy (Tom Berenger), a self-help guru whose trite individualist ideology boils down to "Courage means moving forward in spite of your fears." But while Roger's character-defining skepticism makes him semi-relatable, all of Herzfeld's other protagonists are either painfully earnest personifications or tediously manic counterex...

When Pulp Fiction opened in theaters 20 years ago today, the mainstream moviegoing audience was introduced to a dynamic new Hollywood talent. Quentin Tarantino was a 31-year-old hipster whose formal film education never rose much higher than working as a clerk in a Manhattan Beach video store. A walking encyclopedia of film history who fetishized some of the more obscure genres, Tarantino had a gift for dialog and his own visual toolbox that expanded the language of cinematic storytelling. Pulp Fiction was the culmination of a two-year stretch where the director went from Nobody to Wunderkind, beginning with the Sundance premiere...

Over the summer, before Sylvester Stallone returned to the big screen with his action star goons in The Expendables 3, we got a look at a completely different kind of ensemble movie in the form of Reach Me. The drama looked like Crash 2.0 as it focuses on a motivational book written by a mysterious man (Tom Berenger) which goes viral and quickly gains popularity, inspiring a journalist (Kevin Connolly), his editor (Sylvester Stallone), a former inmate (Kyra Sedgwick), a hip-hop mogul (Nelly), an actor (Cary Elwes) and an undercover cop (Thomas Jane) and more to re-evaluate their choices and decisions by confronting their fears. After watching the trailer for Reach Me, a crowd-funded feature from 15 Minutes helmer John Herzfeld, I can't say I see any reason to see the entire film. The story centers on the idea that a motivational book written by a mysterious man (Tom Berenger) goes viral and inspires a group of people to re-evaluate their lives. This includes people such as a journalist (Kevin Connolly), his fancy-pants editor who also likes to paint (Sylvester Stallone), a former inmate (Kyra Sedgwick), a hip-hop mogul (Nelly), an actor (Cary Elwes) and a violent undercover cop (Thomas Jane). Yeah, it packs a large cast of names you remember hearing once and includes a few more where that came from such as Terry Crews, Kelsey Grammar, Danny Aiello and even Tom Sizemorec!c! Who put this thing togetherc Any way, check out the trailer below, but don't come complaining to me if you can't finish it.

Guys, Sylvester Stallone is ready to touch your heart....again (don't forget about "Rocky"). He's just one of many actors in the crowdfunded "Reach Me," an inspirational drama about confronting your fears and becoming a better, more positive person. We just wish this trailer were more, uh, inspiring.... The particularly ragtag cast of Tom Berenger, Kevin Connolly, Kyra Sedgwick, Nelly, Cary Elwes, Thomas Jane, Terry Crews, Danny Aiello, Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Cohan, Ryan Kwanten and Tom Sizemore (wowsers) star in this thing about a book, written by a mysterious man, that suddenly goes viral and changes the lives of a bunch of a people who have problems. So, "The Secret: The Movie"? John Herzfeld ("15 Minutes," "2 Days In The Valley") wrote and directed this, and its his first feature in seven years. "Reach Me" arrives on VOD and in limited release on November 21st. Watch below. ...

Exclusive: “There are six basic fears we all suffer from, and you’re really lucky if you don’t have all six.” A motivational book written by a mysterious man goes viral and quickly gains popularity, inspiring a disparate group of people to confront their fears. Millennium Entertainment picked up writer-director John Herzfeld’s Reach Me at Cannes and plans a November 21 day-and-date release in theaters and VOD. The drama’s large ensemble cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Tom Berenger, Kevin Connolly, Kyra Sedgwick, Nelly, Cary Elwes, Thomas Jane, Terry Crews, Danny Aiello, Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Cohan, Ryan Kwanten and Tom Sizemore. (It’s an Expendables 3 reunion for Stallone, Crews and Grammer.) The pic, which was crowdfunded for finishing funds after an investor left it $250,000 short, was produced by Rebekah Chaney, Cassian Elwes, Buddy Patrick and Herzfeld.

(Cbr) When the name of your mercenary team is the Expendables, it’s always a good idea to have some newbie cannon fodder on hand. For "The Expendables 3," writer/producer/star Sylvester Stallone once again recruited fresh meat. In addition to genre icons Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Wesley Snipes, Stallone set his sights on a selection of fresh faces from the worlds of film and professional fighting. Franchise newcomers include "Twilight" hunk and rising action star Kellan Lutz ("The Legend of Hercules"), mixed martial artist and Ufc women’s champion Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz, and emerging actor, writer, producer and stuntman Glen Powell ("Ride Along 2"). Throw in Emmy winner Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier," "Boss"), and the mixture became as volatile as a Molotov cocktail. At a recent press conference, the new recruits sounded off on the fun – and the occasional hard knocks – of joining Stallone’s team.

The film features an ensemble cast, and the story follows a group of people who end up all being connected by a self-help book written by a mysterious author. With a distinct whiff of Crash coming off the project, director John Herzfeld's (2 Days in the Valley) Reach Me, telling a number of separate stories connected by a self help book written by a reclusive football coach, had quite the rocky production, with the budget drying up principal photography. Herzfeld took to Kickstarter to raise the rest of the budget. The goal was surpassed, but the campaign was cancelled before it reached it's goal date, only to turn up on Indiegogo (because of its 'more flexible' format, and it allowed international contributions and pledges of over $10,000), where it again surpassed its goal. Now we have the trailer, and for the life of me, I can't make out what is going on here. Thomas Jane is a police officer who seems to model himself off old western heroes. Sylvester Stallone runs a news web site, and maybe is a professional artist.

"You're a finger painting! Be a masterpiece!" Stranger words have never been mush-mouthed by Sylvester Stallone. I am genuinely baffled by the trailer for "Reach Me," a strange new film with an eclectic cast and a preposterous premise. It looks like "Crash" for the self-help industry, an idea that makes my skin full-on crawl. Updated: The trailer that was originally attached to this story was not, technically speaking, a trailer. While we were not the first to post it, when we were contacted by the film's producers, we took down our copy. It turns out that this was a sales reel cut solely to help raise money during production. In our original version of this story, we mentioned that this is a Millennium Films release, and while that's true, they did not produce it. Our opinion of the sales reel remains, but until there is an actual finished trailer available,...

Above is the trailer for Reach Me, starring a spectacular direct-to-dvd cast if anyone's ever seen one. This Millennium Films production packs in the Millennium Films all-stars in a story about a self-help guru who has vanished, leaving behind a book that has changed the lives of an all-star ensemble of actors. Reach Me comes from writer-director John Herzfeld, and considering the life-affirming angle of the trailer, that's a bit bizarre. Herzfeld has made a few pretty nasty movies, none moreso than 15 Minutes, which relies on the novelty of Robert De Niro being tied to a chair and tortured to death. His debut was the ill-advised John Travolta romance Two of A Kind back in the '80s, and his sporadic theatrical work has sent him to television in recent years. His greatest achievement, however, may have been giving Charlize Theron her first standout role in the Pulp Fiction wannabe...
